Hutton Conyers

Nunwick is a hamlet in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. It is about 1 mile north-east of Ripon. Nunwick was historically a township in the ancient parish of Ripon in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The township included two detached parts (a house and a farm) at Howgrave in the parish of Kirklington in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The township, with its detached parts, became the civil parish of Nunwick cum Howgrave in 1866. Later in the 19th century the detached parts in the North Riding were transferred to the civil parishes of Howgrave and Sutton with Howgrave, although the parish name remained Nunwick cum Howgrave. In 1974 the parish was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire. The population of the parish was only 31 in 1961, and in 1988 it was absorbed into the civil parish of Hutton Conyers.

Sharow is a village and civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. It is about 1 mile (1.6 km) north-east of Ripon. The name Sharow derives from the Old English of 'Scearu' and 'Hōh' which translates as boundary hill-spur or a share/division of a sharply projecting piece of land. In the 2001 Census, the village was registered as having a population of 546, which had risen slightly to 556 at the 2011 Census. In 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population to have dropped to 540. The village has a Church of England primary school which was rated as 'Good' by Ofsted in 2016 after previously being listed as 'Requires Improvement' in 2014. The church in the village is St John's which gained Eco-Status in 2017, the fifth one in the Diocese of Leeds to be awarded such status. The church's 2-acre (0.81 ha) churchyard has been managed effectively since 1992 and now is home to a selection of rare plant life, animals and insects. The church hit the headlines in June 2011 when a group of bellringers from Oxfordshire were locked in the church's tower by an irate local due to the noise they were creating. The group were released when a passer-by was alerted to their predicament. The village has a pub (The Half Moon - now closed), Sharow Hall (which is not open to the public) and the remains of a sanctuary cross which signified that the traveller was within 1 mile (1.6 km) of the monastery in Ripon and therefore granted sanctuary. The cross is now a grade II* listed structure, and is one of the trail heads for the Sanctuary Way Walk. During the 19th century, the Archbishop of York was the lord of the manor. Sharow currently has three Saturday cricket teams that play in the Nidderdale Amateur Cricket League. The teams play in the 2nd, 6th and 9th divisions, there are also two Wednesday evening teams who play in the Nidderdale Amateur Evening League and the Harrogate and District Evening League Division 7.

Ripon railway station was a railway station that served Ripon, North Yorkshire, England on the Leeds-Northallerton Line that ran between Harrogate and Northallerton.

The Chapel of St Mary Magdalen, Ripon (sometimes listed as St Mary Magdalene, or St Mary Magdalen (Leper) Chapel, Ripon), is an active Anglican church on Magdalens Road in the city of Ripon, North Yorkshire, England. The chapel, which is dedicated to Jesus' companion Mary Magdalene, is quite close to Ripon Cathedral (which is 0.75-mile (1.21 km) to the southwest), and belongs to the cathedral's benefice, deanery and archdeaconry. The chapels' origins lie in the 12th century when it was built at the behest of Archbishop Thurstan. It was situated opposite the St Mary Magdalen Hospital grounds, becoming the chapel to the hospital and the church for lepers initially, and then later, blind priests. Most of the present church dates to the 15th century and consists of hammer-dressed limestone. The chapel has been renovated at least four times; firstly in the 15th century, then in the 17th, then in 1917, and most recently between 1985 and 1990. The chapel is now a grade I listed structure, and is noted for being the only structure associated with Ripon's medieval hospitals that is still standing.

The River Skell is a 12-mile-long (19 km) tributary of the River Ure in North Yorkshire, England. Its source is in boggy ground on moorland 2 miles (3 km) north of Pateley Bridge. For its first 2 miles (3 km) the river is known as Skell Beck. Descending from the moor the river enters Skell Gill, a narrow wooded valley. The river valley gradually broadens, but remains well wooded, passing the village of Grantley and the 17th century Grantley Hall. The river enters Studley Royal Park and flows past Fountains Hall and the ruins of Fountains Abbey. Below the abbey the river was dammed in the 18th century to form an ornamental lake and water garden. Downstream from the park the river bed is porous rock that allows some or all of the flow to disappear underground. After this, the river re-emerges on the surface and enters the city of Ripon, and on the outskirts receives its largest tributary, the River Laver. The Skell enters the River Ure 0.5 miles (1 km) east of the centre of Ripon. The name is from the Old Norse skjallr, meaning "resounding", from its swift and noisy course. In the Middle Ages the river was known as "Heaven Water", presumably from its association with Fountains Abbey. The flow of the River Skell has been measured at Alma Weir in Ripon, near to its confluence with the Ure since 1984. The thirty year record shows that the catchment of 120 square kilometres (46 sq mi) to the gauging station yields an average flow of 1.54 cubic metres per second (54 cu ft/s). In June 2007 the highest river level was recorded of 1.8 metres (5 ft 11 in) over the weir, which was estimated to have a flow of 103 cubic metres per second (3,600 cu ft/s).

Copt Hewick is a village and civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. The village lies about two miles east of Ripon. It had a population of 180 in 2004 according to the North Yorkshire County Council, increasing to 253 at the 2011 census. The name of the village derives from the Old English Coppede hēah wīc, which means High specialised farm. The Copt element refers to the hill that the village stands on. The village is home to Holy Innocents Church, Copt Hewick, which forms a group with a school and clock tower, all built in 1876.

The Abbeys Amble is a long-distance path in North Yorkshire, England. It is a circular walk of 104 miles (167 km), based on Ripon. It links three abbeys – Fountains Abbey, Bolton Abbey and Jervaulx Abbey – and three castles – Ripley Castle, Bolton Castle and Middleham Castle.

The Diocese of Ripon (Diocese of Ripon and Leeds from 1999 until 2014) was a former Church of England diocese, part of the Province of York. Immediately prior to its dissolution, it covered an area in western and northern Yorkshire as well as the south Teesdale area administered by County Durham which is traditionally part of Yorkshire. The cities of Ripon and Leeds were within its boundaries as were the towns of Harrogate, Richmond, Knaresborough, Hawes and Bedale and the surrounding countryside; its northern boundary was the River Tees. The diocesan Bishop of Ripon had his cathedral church at Ripon. The diocese was also served by a suffragan Bishop of Knaresborough and was divided into two archdeaconries, those of Richmond and Leeds. For organizational purposes, the diocese was further divided into eight deaneries: Richmond, Wensley, Ripon, Harrogate, Allerton, Headingley, Armley and Whitkirk. The first four deaneries are located in the Archdeaconry of Richmond, and the latter four are in the Archdeaconry of Leeds. The former Diocese covered an area of 1,359 square miles, with a range of urban and rural parishes, these range from urban areas like Holbeck and Armley with New Wortley, urban centres like Ripon and Richmond and rural parishes like Danby Wiske with Hutton Bonneville in the Vale of Mowbray, Eryholme on the southern bank of the River Tees and Upper Nidderdale high in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Wilfrid, commonly known as Ripon Cathedral, and until 1836 known as Ripon Minster, is a cathedral in Ripon, North Yorkshire, England. Founded as a monastery by monks of the Irish tradition in the 660s, it was refounded as a Benedictine monastery by St Wilfrid in 672. The church became collegiate in the tenth century, and acted as a mother church within the large Diocese of York for the remainder of the Middle Ages. The present church is the fourth, and was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. In 1836 the church became the cathedral for the Diocese of Ripon. In 2014 the Diocese was incorporated into the new Diocese of Leeds, and the church became one of three co-equal cathedrals of the Bishop of Leeds. The cathedral is notable architecturally for its gothic west front in the Early English style, considered one of the best of its type, as well as the Geometric east window. The seventh-century crypt of Wilfrid's church is a significant example of early Christian architecture in England. The cathedral has Grade I listed building status.

The Liberty of Ripon or Riponshire was a liberty possessing separate county jurisdiction, although situated within the county of Yorkshire, England. The liberty was under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of York, a privilege claimed to have been granted by King Aethelstan in the 10th century. The liberty was governed by a high steward and justices of the peace, appointed by the archbishop, and the area had separate quarter sessions, in conjunction with the mayor and recorder of the borough of Ripon, in whose town hall they were held. In 1831 the following parishes and townships (locally in the North and West Ridings of Yorkshire) were in the liberty: Most of Ripon Felixkirk Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe Kilburn, North Yorkshire Nidd with Killinghall Marton-cum-Moxby In 1836 the temporal jurisdiction of the archbishop was ended, with the power to appoint justices revested in the crown, and in 1837 the townships locally in the North Riding were removed from the liberty. In 1889, the Local Government Act 1888 came into operation. Section 48 of the Act merged "every liberty and franchise of a county" into its surrounding administrative county. While this was the end of the liberty's administrative functions, separate quarter sessions continued until 1953, and it was also a distinct unit for land tax purposes for some time.

Holy Innocents Church is an Anglican church in Copt Hewick, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. Anglican worship in Copt Hewick began in the mid-19th century, in a schoolroom. In 1876, a church was constructed, to a design by W. Lewis and Robert Hargreave Brodrick. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Ripon on 2 August. In 1887, it was dedicated to the Holy Innocents, and that year, the nave was extended, a vestry added, and the roof was replaced. In 1960, new altar rails and a reading desk were installed, and the following year, stained glass was placed in the windows. The church was Grade II listed in 1986. The church is built of polychromatic brick, with a roof in purple slate with grey bands. It consists of a nave with a south porch, an apsidal chancel with a conical roof, and a north vestry. On the roof is a wooden lantern with a short spire. The west window has two lights, and the other windows are lancets. The porch has a blue brick archway with a wooden head pierced by small quatrefoils. Inside, there are many polychromatic tiles, and there is a chancel screen which can slide into the side walls.

Ripon Parks is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, or SSSI, situated north of Ripon, to the west of the River Ure and to the east of the village of North Stainley, in North Yorkshire, England. It was once part of the land held since the Middle Ages as a deer park by the archbishops of York (including Cardinal Wolsey) and the canons of Ripon. The site was designated as an SSSI in 1983, because its varied habitats are valued for their breeding birds, amphibians and varied flora. The woods here are "of note" for the parasitic flowers of common toothwort and yellow star-of-Bethlehem. A small part of the site is accessible via public footpaths; there are no public facilities or dedicated car parks. The site incorporates the High Batts Nature Reserve, which is privately run for training, recording and educational purposes, and accessible to members only, except for its annual open day. Ripon Parks is now owned by the Ministry of Defence, and parts of the site are used as military training areas.
