Bilbster railway station

Bilbster is a rural area in the Highlands region of Scotland. It is situated on the A882 road and consists of just a handful of houses spread over approximately 1 square mile (2.6 km2). The nearest village is Watten which is approximately 2 miles (3 km) to the north-west and the nearest town is Wick which is 5 miles (8 km) to the south-east. Bilbster is a farming area. The River Wick, which is a productive salmon river, flows to the north of the settlement. A nearby wind farm was opened in 2008, consisting of three wind turbines that together are capable of generating 3.9 megawatts of electricity. Bilbster railway station was closed in 1960.

Killimster is a small remote scattered hamlet in Wick, in eastern Caithness, Scottish Highlands and is in the Scottish council area of Highland. RAF Skitten, the departure point for Operation Freshman, was located at Killimster.

Watten was a railway station located at the east end of Loch Watten, Highland between Halkirk and Wick, Scotland. The station opened on 28 July 1874. The station master from 1876 to 1909 was Mr. Phimster. It was one of a number of smaller stations on the Far North Line which were closed in 1960.

Loch Burn is a stream that flows out of the eastern end of Loch Watten in Caithness, in the Highland area of Scotland, at a height of around 20 metres and about one kilometre north/northeast of the village of Watten. Less than a kilometre east of its source at Loch Watten the burn flows into Wick River.

Royal Air Force Skitten or more simply RAF Skitten is a former Royal Air Force satellite station directly east of the village of Killimster, located 5.1 miles (8.2 km) north east of Watten, Caithness, Scotland, and 4.7 miles (7.6 km) northwest of Wick, Caithness, Scotland. On 19 November 1942, Operation Freshman departed from RAF Skitten.

Skitten Broch was an Iron Age broch located between the villages of Killimster and North Killimster in Caithness, Scotland (grid reference ND32345655).

Haster is a small remote rural hamlet and district in Wick, in the Highland area of Scotland. It is located just west of the Bridge of Haster, which carries the A882 road linking the burghs of Wick and Thurso over the Achairn Burn to the main A9 road. It is about 2+1⁄2 miles (4 km) west of Wick and about 5+1⁄2 miles (9 km) east of Watten. An older village centre is about half a mile to the south. Haster has two play parks and a football pitch, and there is a memorial fountain dedicated to General Lord Horne in the hamlet. The ruins of St Cuthbert's Church is close to the hamlet. Thought to have measured 40 by 14 feet (12 by 4 m), in 1726 it was described as the "Chapell of Haulster - the common people bury their dead about it".

Strath Burn is a stream which has its source in the Flow Country of Caithness, Scotland, at a height above sea level of around 70 metres, at the confluence of Kensary Burn, and Rowens Burn, and about five kilometres south of the village of Watten. Strath Burn meanders generally northward across a distance of about four kilometres, with the Moss of Badarclay to its west, to join Scouthal Burn and so form the source of the Wick River, at around 25 metres and about one kilometre south of Watten.

The Battle of Altimarlach was a Scottish clan battle that took place on 13 July 1680, near Wick, Caithness, Scotland. It was fought in a dispute between Sir John Campbell of Glenorchy and George Sinclair of Keiss over who had the right to the title and lands of the Earl of Caithness. The battle was fought between men of the Clan Campbell and Clan Sinclair. Campbell of Glenorchy won a decisive victory in the battle, but Sinclair of Keiss later turned to the law and was awarded the title of Earl of Caithness.

Watten (Scottish Gaelic: Bhatan) is a small village in Caithness, in the Highland area of Scotland, on the main road (A882-A9) between the burgh of Wick and the town of Thurso, about twelve kilometres (eight miles) west of Wick and close to Wick River and to Loch Watten. The village is on The Far North railway line but trains stopped calling at the village in 1960. The railway station is now a private house. The village is within the parish of Watten, which has the parish of Bower to the north, that of Wick to the east, that of Latheron to the south and that of Halkirk to the west. Loch Watten is the largest body of water in Caithness. The name of the village and loch appear to come from the Old Norse Vatn, meaning water or lake, and the loch is famous for its brown trout fishing. The local public house is also named "The Brown Trout" after the local produce.

Scouthal Burn, a continuation of Burn of Acharole has its source in the Flow Country of Caithness, in the Highland area of Scotland, at a height of around 50 metres, at the confluence of the Burn of Achorole and Alt Feithe Buidhe and about three kilometres south/southwest of the village of Watten. Scouthal Burn meanders generally north/north-westward, across a distance of about two kilometres, with the Moss of Badarclay to its east, to join Strath Burn and so form the source of the Wick River, at around 25 metres and about one kilometre south of Watten.

Reiss is a village in the former county of Caithness, now in the Highland council area of northern Scotland. It is well known in the Caithness area for its beach and also the 18-hole Wick golf course. It is 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Wick and 15 miles (24 km) south of John o' Groats. Reiss is mainly made up of two areas, the Reiss Village and Nordwall Park housing areas. Added to this there are various houses dotted through the area, as well as a trailer park.
