Armathwaite Castle

Armathwaite is a village in the English ceremonial county of Cumbria. Historically within the county of Cumberland, Armathwaite lies on the River Eden, forms part of the Westmorland and Furness district and is served by Armathwaite railway station. The majority of the village is in Hesket civil parish but with some buildings in the parish of Ainstable and others on the outskirts of the village located in the parish of Wetheral, within the Cumberland district. The castle on the west bank of the river was originally a pele tower with a large but undistinguished Edwardian extension. The parish church of Christ and St Mary was formerly a chapel-of-ease in the parish of Hesket-in-the-Forest and is one of the smallest parish churches in England. By the 17th century the original chapel had become ruinous but it was rebuilt before 1688 by Richard Skelton of Armathwaite Castle. It consists of a chancel and nave with a wooden roof and a small western bell turret. The town of Armathwaite in Fentress County, Tennessee was named by Alwyn Maude, who was from the Armathwaite area (then in Cumberland) and who arrived in Tennessee about 1881 and settled in the Rugby Colony. Richard Tomlinson (former spy) spent his childhood in Armathwaite. An application to erect a wind turbine on a ridge to the south east of the village was considered by Eden District Council in 2014 and turned down. The application attracted 3 letters of support and 895 letters of objection. Another wind turbine application for nearby Aiketgate is being considered by the Harmony Energy Ltd. on land at Barrock End Farm. Armathwaite Golf Club (now defunct) was founded in 1907. The club disappeared following WW1.

Armathwaite is a railway station on the Settle and Carlisle Line, which runs between Carlisle and Leeds via Settle. The station, situated 9 miles 75 chains (16 km) south-east of Carlisle, serves the village of Armathwaite, in Cumbria, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains.

Low House is an 18th-century Georgian manor house located one and a half miles north of the village of Armathwaite in the Eden Valley of Cumbria, England. It sits close to the River Eden, which flows through Cumbria up to the Solway Firth. The house is situated within Wetheral civil parish.

Castle Hewen (also recorded as Castlewen; Castle Luen; Castellewyn; Castellewyne; Castlehewings; Castle-Ewaine and Castle Lewen) was a Romano-British castle near High Hesket, in the civil parish of Hesket, in the Westmorland and Furness district, in the county of Cumbria, England. It overlooked the now-drained Tarn Wadling, and was supposedly occupied by Owain mab Urien. All that remain, as at 2023, are earthworks.

Tarn Wadling (formerly spelled Turnewathelane, Terne Wathelyne, among others) was a lake between Carlisle and Penrith, near the village of High Hesket in Cumbria, England. In the Middle Ages, it was famous for its carp, but it was drained in the 19th century, and is now no more than a depression. The name remains today in a small woodland governed by the Woodland Trust. Throughout the Middle Ages and in later folklore the tarn was associated with spectral appearances and functioned as a liminal place between the regular world and fairyland; it occurs in three Arthurian poems, all involving Sir Gawain.

Ainstable is a village and civil parish in the English county of Cumbria. Historically part of the traditional county of Cumberland, it is now in the unitary authority area of Westmorland and Furness. The parish stretches from the banks of the River Eden to the summits of the North Pennines where it borders Northumberland and includes the villages of Croglin and Newbiggin as well as the hamlets of Dale, Walmersyke, Ruckcroft and Longdales and part of the village of Armathwaite. Ainstable was the site of a Benedictine convent (the manor of "Nunnery"). This is said to date from the reign of William Rufus. However, Pevsner says that "the earliest reference is 1200. The nuns were so harassed by the Scots that in 1480 they had to reinvent their own charter, spuriously dating their foundation to 1089 and William Rufus." After the closure of the monasteries, the convent building became a private home, held for many years by the Aglionby family, and is now a guesthouse. Eden Valley Woollen Mill is located in Ainstable itself. The former village pub, the New Crown Inn, has closed and been sold for redevelopment. In 2014 Eden District Council rejected a fiercely opposed plan to erect a wind turbine near to the village and the neighbouring village of Armathwaite.

Aiketgate is a small village in the English county of Cumbria. It is within the civil parish of Hesket. Development of wind turbines in the Eden Valley has drawn attention to Aiketgate. A company called Harmony Energy Ltd. has plans to erect a 77-metre-high (253 ft) mast at Barrock End Farm in Aiketgate. These plans are opposed by the campaign group- NO2AWT.

Eden Gorge is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) including a 5km length of the valley of the River Eden between Armathwaite and Lazonby in Cumbria, England. This protected area spans between the Settle-Carlisle railway track on the western side to Coombs Wood Forestry Commission site on the eastern side. The protected area includes 30m high cliffs where the River Eden has eroded through New Red Sandstone. The semi-natural woodland is apparently a remnant of the ancient Inglewood forest.

Ruckcroft is a hamlet in the English county of Cumbria. It neighbours the larger settlements of Armathwaite and Ainstable. In the past Ruckcroft had a pub but this is now a private home.

Cumwhitton is a small village and civil parish close to Carlisle in Cumbria, England. It lies just east of the M6 and the nearest train station is located in Wetheral, 3 miles away. Cumwhitton is often confused with the nearby village of Cumwhinton in Wetheral parish. The population of the civil parish as taken at the 2011 Census was 310.

Hesket (also Hesket-in-the-Forest) is a large civil parish in the Westmorland and Furness unitary district of Cumbria, England, on the main A6 between Carlisle and Penrith. Hesket is part of the historic royal hunting ground of Inglewood Forest. Settlement in the parish dates back to the Roman occupation.

Cotehill railway station was a railway station on the Settle-Carlisle Railway in England between Armathwaite and Cumwhinton. The line opened for passengers in 1876. The station was designed by the Midland Railway company architect John Holloway Sanders.The Ordnance Survey map published in the year 1900 shows the station serving the point at which a tramway from Knothill Plaster and Cement Works meets the Settle-Carlisle. The tramway continued from Knothill to Boaterby Quarry. According to Tyler, Knothill was one of the first Gypsum sites in CumbriaThe station is named after the nearest village, Cotehill, but this is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) away and extremely small. It is closer to the site of Englethwaite Hall which was built by John Thomlinson in 1879 but demolished by 1969, the site now being the location of a Caravan Club campsite. It is clear from the map that the sparse local population could not have sustained a railway station. In addition, the station is only 3.5 miles (5.6 km) from Armathwaite and very close to Cumwhinton, both of which had stations of their own. The tramway is absent from later maps, though its route is clearly visible as a track on the 1951 map. The station closed in 1952. Unusually for this line, the passenger buildings were demolished. The site remains clear so could in principle be re-used. One end of it is occupied by a communication mast. The stationmaster's house and railway workers' cottages are immediately adjacent to the Cotehill Viaduct, where the railway crosses High Stand Gill near where it flows into the Eden. The houses are privately occupied.
