The Colony is a reality television program. The first season was filmed in an industrial area bordering the Los Angeles River on the edge of downtown Los Angeles, and follows ten cast members in an environment that simulates life after a global catastrophe. The series first aired on the Discovery Channel on July 21, 2009. Filming began on February 28, and ran until April 28, 2009.

The Sixth Street Viaduct, also known as the Sixth Street Bridge, was a viaduct bridge that connected the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles with the Boyle Heights neighborhood. It spanned the Los Angeles River, the Santa Ana Freeway (US 101), and the Golden State Freeway (I-5), as well as Metrolink and Union Pacific railroad tracks and several local streets. Built in 1932, the viaduct was composed of three independent structures: the reinforced concrete west segment, the central steel arch segment over the river, and the reinforced concrete east segment. In 1986, the Caltrans bridge survey found the Sixth Street Viaduct eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.Despite its historical status, the bridge was closed for demolition and replacement in January 2016 due to concerns over seismic instability.

Dolores Mission, Los Angeles is a Catholic parish in the largely Hispanic area of Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles. Hollenbeck Park is a city park in the Boyle Heights district of Los Angeles, California. It is located on the corner of Saint Louis and Fourth Streets, near Boyle Avenue. The park features grassy knolls, picnic areas, playgrounds, a skateboard park, and a man-made lake.

Self-Help Graphics & Art, Inc. is a community arts center in East Los Angeles, California, United States. The building is a mix Beaux-Arts and vernacular architecture built in 1927, and was designed by Postle & Postle. Formed during the cultural renaissance that accompanied the Chicano Movement, or Self Help, as it is sometimes called, was one of the primary centers that incubated the nascent Chicano art movement, and remains important in the Chicano art movement, as well as in the greater Los Angeles community, today. SHG also hosts musical and other performances, and organizes Los Angeles's annual Day of the Dead festivities. Throughout its history, the organization has worked with well-known artists in the Los Angeles area such as Los Four and the East Los Streetscapers, but it has focused primarily on training and giving exposure to young and new artists, many of whom have gone on to national and international prominence.

Linda Vista Community Hospital is a former hospital located at 610-30 South St. Louis Street in Los Angeles, California, United States, in the Boyle Heights neighborhood. The hospital was originally constructed for employees of the Santa Fe Railroad and called the Santa Fe Coast Lines Hospital. It was one of four employee hospitals run by the railroad Santa Fe Employees Hospital Association. After its closure, the hospital became a popular filming location for productions, including films, TV shows, and music videos. It has also become the subject of several paranormal investigations. Pico/Aliso station is an at-grade light rail station on the L Line of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. It is located in the median of East 1st Street between South Anderson Street and South Utah Street in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. This station opened on November 15, 2009, as part of the Gold Line Eastside Extension. During construction of the Regional Connector project west of this station, Pico/Aliso is currently serving as the northbound terminus of the southern portion of the L Line. At this station, passengers can transfer between trains and a bus bridge that serves the Little Tokyo/Arts District station area and Union Station's Patsaouras Transit Plaza, where passengers can board trains to continue on the northern portion of the L Line. This station and all the other Eastside Extension stations will be part of the E Line upon completion of the Regional Connector project in 2022.

Two Bit Circus is an American amusement park and themed entertainment company, marketing itself as the world's first "micro amusement park" for its smaller scale indoor attractions. Located in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles, Two Bit Circus opened a second location in Dallas, Texas, in 2022. Compared to Chuck E. Cheese and noted for its usage of virtual reality, Two Bit Circus received positive reviews from critics and audiences upon its opening. The two parks largely succeeded by innovating upon the history of the American traveling carnival, with inventions like the fire performance dunk tank Flambé coming from the entertainment company prior to expansion into creating their own amusement parks.

The historic 1889 Boyle Hotel is across the street from the Mariachi Plaza at the corner of Boyle Avenue, First Street and Pleasant Avenue in the East Los Angeles community of Boyle Heights. The building was formerly a hotel and commercial shops line the first floor of this Queen Anne Style building. In 2007 the building was declared a Los Angeles Cultural Monument.The building was rehabilitated by East LA Community Corporation as affordable housing. Ernesto Espinoza is the Director of Real Estate Development for East LA Community Corporation who helped line up the $25 million in public and private subsidies to develop 51 units of affordable housing at the Boyle Hotel – Cummings Block and adjacent parcels. ELACC added a new 20-unit apartment building adjacent to the Boyle Hotel on the Cummings Block.

Mariachi Plaza station is an underground light rail station on the L Line of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. It is located under 1st Street at its at the intersection of Boyle Avenue, with the main exit located at Mariachi Plaza, after which the station is named. The plaza is the historic gateway to the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. This station opened in 2009 as part of the Gold Line Eastside Extension and was one of two underground stations on the Eastside Extension (the other being Mariachi Plaza). This station and all the other Eastside Extension stations will be part of the E Line upon completion of the Regional Connector project in 2022. Until 1963, the Los Angeles Railway's P Line yellow streetcars operated on the surface of 1st Street, including a stop near this station.
