Christianspris or Frederiksort was a Danish fortification somewhat north of the then Danish city of Kiel. In 1632 the Danish king Christian IV initiated the works of making a fortification on a land tongue on the West shore of the Kielerfiord on the Jernved peninsula. The purpose was to secure this land against German troops during the 30-years War. However, the town was short lived. Christian IV founded many towns and cities. It is thought this town only survived around 10 years.

German submarine U-2323 was a Type XXIII submarine of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. She was constructed at Hamburg during the spring of 1944, completed on the 18 July and given to Leutnant zur See Walter Angermann to command. A fast high-technology coastal boat, U-2323 was expected to be the new war-winning weapon in the Kriegsmarine 's arsenal.

The U-Boot-Ehrenmal Möltenort (Möltenort U-Boat Memorial) in Heikendorf near Kiel is a memorial site belonging to the German War Graves Commission, commemorating the sailors who died serving in U-Boat units during the First and Second World Wars, along with all victims of submarine warfare. The memorial also honours U-Boat sailors from the Bundeswehr who have been killed in service since. The memorial site is an emblem of Heikendorf.

German submarine U-2355 was a Type XXIII U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. She was ordered on 20 September 1944, and was laid down on 18 October 1944 at Deutsche Werft AG, Hamburg, as yard number 509. She was launched on 13 December 1944 and commissioned under the command of Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Heino Franke on 12 January 1945.

HMS Seal was one of six Grampus-class mine-laying submarines of the Royal Navy. She served in the Second World War and was captured by the Kriegsmarine and taken into German service as UB, one of several captured subs. She was the only submarine the Germans captured at sea during World War II. Her capture allowed the Germans to correct a critical fault in their U-boat torpedoes.Seal was laid down at the Chatham Dockyard on 9 December 1936, launched on 27 September 1938 and commissioned into the Royal Navy on 28 January 1939. During her entire British career, her commander was Rupert Lonsdale, for whom it was his second command.

Kieler Förde is an approximately 17 km (11 mi) long inlet of the Baltic Sea on the eastern side of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Formed by glacial movement during the last ice age, it divides Danish Wold peninsula from Wagria. Like the other inlets of förde-type, geologically it is not a fjord. It originates at the Hörn in centre-city Kiel and merges into the Bay of Kiel. The eastern terminus of the Kiel Canal is located along Kiel Förde leading into the Port of Kiel. At its narrowest point, the "Friedrichsorter Enge", the fjord is only one kilometre wide. The Schwentine enters Kieler Förde near Kiel-Dietrichsdorf.

In 1959, the town was incorporated into the city of Kiel, therefore today sometimes named as Kiel-Schilksee (German pronunciation: [kiːl ˈʃɪlkˌzeː] (listen)). The town is a popular vacation destination because of its beaches and houses several resorts.Sailing events were held off Schilksee during the 1936 Summer Olympics.During the 1972 Summer Olympics, held in Munich, Germany, the Olympic Yachting Center was built at Schilksee for the sailing events of the 1972 games.

Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad (1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece). With the exception of 1904 and the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 1972 consisted of a total of six sailing classes (disciplines). For each class seven races were scheduled from 29 August 1972 to 8 September 1972 of the coast of Kiel-Schilksee in the Bay of Kiel. Kiel hosted the Olympic sailing competitions for the second time, having previously done so during the 1936 Summer Olympics. The sailing was done on the triangular type Olympic courses.
