Loyal Order of Moose

Mooseheart, located in Kane County, Illinois, is an unincorporated community and a home for children administered by the Loyal Order of Moose. Also known as the City of Children, the community is featured as a 1949 episode of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's short film series Passing Parade, which was written and narrated by John Nesbitt. In 2013, Mooseheart celebrated its 100th anniversary with a rededication ceremony, public tours, fireworks, and other festivities.Like Moose Lodges, Mooseheart was originally only open to Caucasians. The facility was created to be a home for the widows and the children of members of the Loyal Order of Moose. Later, any child who had a family member who was a member of the Moose could be admitted. In 1994, admission policies were changed to allow any child in need to apply for admission, regardless of the family's affiliation or lack thereof with the Moose.In the 1950s, a pediatrician conducting a longitudinal study of children's growth at Mooseheart recalled there was tension since he felt that the board of directors was conducting the study to prove the superiority of the white race. By the 1990s, Mooseheart was open to children of all races and predominantly enrolled minority children.In 1994, four Mooseheart employees were convicted of sexually abusing children. Two years later, a Mooseheart employee was convicted of possession of child pornography.

Batavia Township is in Kane County, Illinois. It is divided by the Fox River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 35,221 and it contained 12,892 housing units. The western part of the United States Department of Energy's Fermilab is at the township's eastern edge (formerly in the village of Weston), although most of the facility is in neighboring Winfield Township in DuPage County.

Batavia High School, or BHS, is a public four-year high school located in Batavia, Illinois. It was created by the merger of West Batavia High School and East Batavia High School (and their separate school districts) in April 1911 and is part of Batavia Public School District 101; the East Batavia and West Batavia athletic programs merged in 1909. Since 2009, the school has added a new "D Wing" of classrooms, "E Wing" of music rooms, a fieldhouse, new athletic facilities, and an auditorium ("F Wing"), which was completed in 2011.

North Aurora is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States, and a suburb of Aurora. Per the 2020 census, the population was 18,261. North Aurora maintains its own public library district, fire district, and police department, but public spaces and parks are managed by the neighboring Fox Valley Park District.

The First Methodist Church of Batavia is a historic building in Batavia, Illinois. It functioned as a Methodist church until the 1880s. The building was then converted into the McWayne School Annex, which held classes until 1978. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Batavia Public School District 101 (BPS101) is a school district headquartered in Batavia, Illinois. The district is run by a superintendent and is overseen by a seven-member elected school board.Batavia previously had two school districts serving western and eastern portions; they combined into BPS101 in 1911.

C.W. Shumway & Sons was a foundry operational in Batavia, Illinois from 1872 to 2002. It produced metal castings for various industrial uses and for awards, including the Emmy Award, Academy Awards, and the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The company was closed in 2002 due to changing market demands. At the time of its closure, it was one of the oldest foundries in the United States.

The United Methodist Church of Batavia is a historical church in Batavia, Illinois. Funds for the church were donated by Rev. E. H. Gammon and Cpt. Don Carlos Newton in 1887 to replace the First Methodist Church of Batavia. It was designed by famed local architect Solon Spencer Beman in the Romanesque Revival style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

A "vernacular region" is a distinctive area where the inhabitants collectively consider themselves interconnected by a shared history, mutual interests, and a common identity. Such regions are "intellectual inventions" and a form of shorthand to identify things, people, and places. Vernacular regions reflect a "sense of place," but rarely coincide with established jurisdictional borders.The Tri-City area is primarily located in Kane County, though Batavia and St. Charles include parcels in DuPage County. The three communities are often grouped together due to their shared history, close proximity on the Fox River, relative socioeconomic condition, and similar population sizes. They are among the oldest in Kane County as well as the state.

Batavia is part of a vernacular region known as the Tri-City area, along with St. Charles and Geneva, all western suburbs of similar size and relative socioeconomic condition.
