Burnt Yates is a village in the Borough of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, England.

Burnt Yates School was a primary school in the village of Burnt Yates, in North Yorkshire, in England. The school was founded in 1760. It was endowed with £150 in the will of William Coates, a shopkeeper in nearby Ripley, who had heard negative reports of the behaviour of children in Burnt Yates. It was also endowed with the estate of Flask Farm, by Rear Admiral Robert Long. It became a state school in the 20th century, and in its first 250 years had just 15 headteachers. The school was rated inadequate by Ofsted, due to its safeguarding procedures. It then failed to find an academy chain to join, leading it to close in 2018. The following year, Admiral Long School moved from nearby Bishop Thornton to the Burnt Yates building. The school building dates from 1760, and was extended in 1763 and 1849. A trustees' room was added in 1773. It is built of gritstone, the roof of the earlier parts is in stone slate, with stone coping and a shaped kneeler, and the later part is in blue slate. The original part has two tall storeys and two bays, the 1763 extension to the left is of the same height, with three storeys and two bays, and the latest extension is at right angles to the right and has a single tall storey. In the original part are floor bands and a doorway with a quoined surround, above which is an inscribed crest, and both earlier parts have quoins. The latest part has a porch, a date plaque, and a bellcote. In all parts are windows that are mullioned, or mullioned and transomed. The trustees' room includes original chairs made by Thomas Chippendale, a Georgian map, and portraits of George I of Great Britain and Caroline of Ansbach. The building was Grade II listed in 1987.

Shaw Mills is a hamlet in the civil parish of Bishop Thornton, Shaw Mills and Warsill, in Nidderdale in the Harrogate district, North Yorkshire, England. It lies in the valley of Thornton Beck, a tributary of the River Nidd, 6 miles (10 km) north west of Harrogate. The village probably takes its name from a corn mill kept by one Robert Shaw in the 16th century. In 1812 John and George Metcalfe began spinning flax in the Low Mill at Shaw Mills The High Mill and Low Mill both closed by 1861, but in about 1890 were restarted for silk-spinning. The mills closed soon after the First World War. An industrial settlement developed in the 19th century to serve the mills. And it is now derelict and about to fall down

Clint is a village in Nidderdale in North Yorkshire, England. It lies on the north bank of the River Nidd, 4 miles north-west of Harrogate. Clint is the largest village in the civil parish of Clint cum Hamlets, which also includes the settlements of Burnt Yates and Bedlam. The toponym represents the Old Danish klint, meaning "steep or rocky bank".

St Thomas a Becket's Church is the parish church of Hampsthwaite, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. Numerous Saxon and Norman graveslabs have been found in the vicinity of the church, suggesting there was an early church building here. The first recorded church was built around 1180, probably on behalf of Hugh de Morville, Lord of Westmorland, one of the knights responsible for the murder of Thomas Becket. The church is believed to have been damaged during the First War of Scottish Independence and rebuilt later in the 14th century, with a new tower constructed in the 15th century. In 1820 the whole church other than the tower was demolished and rebuilt. It was again rebuilt in 1902, in the Perpendicular Gothic style, by C. Hodgson Fowler. The building was grade II listed in 1966. The church is built of gritstone with a grey slate roof and consists of a nave, a south aisle, a south porch, a chancel with a south vestry and a west tower. The 15th-century tower has three stages, stepped diagonal buttresses and a west doorway in Gothic style with a moulded surround, above which is a three-light Perpendicular window, and on the south face is a three-light window; all the openings have hood moulds. The bell openings have three lights and above is an eaves string course, an embattled parapet with central triangular pilasters and a weathervane. The porch entrance has a chamfered surround and inside it are medieval and 17th-century inscriptions and tomb slabs. Inside the church is a Norman font, 17th-century panelling in the south aisle, the 17th-century churchwarden's pew and two Elizabethan chairs. There is a memorial brass dating from about 1360 but dedicated to Andrew Dixon, who died in 1570, and a large white marble monument to Amy Woodforde-Finden, sculpted by George Edward Wade.

Hampsthwaite Bridge is a historic structure in Hampsthwaite, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. A bridge over the River Nidd in Hampsthwaite was first recorded in 1527. It was rebuilt in 1598, probably in timber. In 1640, it was rebuilt in stone. The parapet was rebuilt, probably in the 19th century, and at a similar time, the southern arch was widened on the west side. The bridge was grade II listed in 1952. In 2001, a lorry crashed through the parapet and was left dangling over the river, following which it was closed to heavy goods vehicles. In 2023, large cracks appeared in the bridge, and it was temporarily closed to allow the rebuilding of one of the parapets. The bridge is built of gritstone, and consists of three segmental arches with the voussoirs set back slightly. It has triangular cutwaters, chamfered at the top, carried up as pedestrian recesses, and corbels carrying the overhanging parapet.

Birstwith is a village and civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. It is part of the Nidderdale, and is situated on the River Nidd. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 756 and increased to 868 based on the 2011 Census.Birstwith Mill on Wreaks Road is run by Kerry Ingredients, a food products manufacturer. The River Nidd provided water for the mill, and although sluice gates and a mill race exist, the water wheel no longer turns—an existing weir provides the mill with a head of water. The mill race rejoins the river downstream. About 1 mile (1.6 km) upstream is a packhorse bridge. The local public house is the Station Hotel which acts as a meeting place, and venue for organised charity events such as the Birstwith Coast 2 Coast Cycle Challenge. The village has a store and post office, and a doctor's surgery which is part of a Nidderdale medical group. Sport facilities include a cricket pitch, tennis courts, and a snooker room. The village had a railway station on the NER line running between Harrogate and Pateley Bridge. The goods yard became Birstwith Grange, a housing development for commuters. The railway line continued along the Nidd Valley and was used in the construction of Scar House and Angram reservoirs. A village primary school and a Reading Room, built and donated by the owner of the local Swarcliffe Hall around 1880, still exist today. In the mid-1970s Swarcliffe Hall was sold and the contents auctioned, the building became a private prep school. Today Birstwith has a Church of England primary school, and a private school which occupy Swarcliffe Hall. In 2017 Birstwith In Bloom was established. Birstwith won a Silver-gilt at the Yorkshire in Bloom awards, this was the first time the village had entered the competition.

St James' Church is the parish church of Birstwith, a village in North Yorkshire in England. The church was commissioned by John Frederick Greenwood, a local mill owner. It was designed by Rohde Hawkins and built between 1856 and 1857, in a late 13th-/early 14th-century Gothic style. A vestry and organ chamber were added in 1887. The church was Grade II listed in 1987. The church is built in gritstone with grey slate roofs. It consists of a nave, north and south aisles, a north porch, a chancel, a vestry and organ chamber, and a west steeple. The 100 foot steeple has a tower with three stages, diagonal buttresses, a band, bell openings with pointed arches and hood moulds, and a broach spire with one tier of lucarnes. Inside, there are pews probably dating from 1887, a chancel arch with carvings of grapes and wheat, and a reredos with figures in alabaster and glass mosaic. The organ was made by Binns, and the National Churches Trust states that the church has "some splendid stained glass".

Bishop Thornton is a village in the civil parish of Bishop Thornton, Shaw Mills and Warsill, in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 521, decreasing to 507 at the 2011 census. The village is about seven miles north of Harrogate. Bishop Thornton has both Anglican and Roman Catholic churches, the latter being the oldest in the Diocese of Leeds, and two schools. The village was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974.

St Joseph's Church is a Catholic church in Bishop Thornton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The existence of Catholic worship in Bishop Thornton is attested from at least 1746. In 1790, a presbytery was built for Richard Talbot and Charles Saul, on land donated by Stephen Ingilby. It has a decorative staircase leading up to a windowless room, where it is presumed that mass was said. In 1809, a church was built onto the presbytery. It was restored by Weightman & Brown from 1980 to 1981, and the whole structure was Grade II listed in 1986. It is the oldest purpose-built church in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Leeds. Both the church and presbytery are built of gritstone with tile roofs. The presbytery has two storeys and attics, and three bays, a central porch and mullioned windows. The church to the right has four bays, round-headed windows, a porch at the east end, and a gable cross. Inside, most of the furnishing date to between 1875 and 1929, the period when Herman Geurts served as priest. The stained glass dates from the mid-20th century, and is by Hardman & Co. The church also contains a slab from the Mediaeval altar of Walworth Chapel.

Hampsthwaite is a large village and civil parish in Nidderdale in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies on the south bank of the River Nidd 5 miles (8 km) north west of Harrogate. In the 2011 census the parish had a population of 1,083.The centre of the village is designated as a Conservation Area. Hampsthwaite lies just outside the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but the area to the north and west of the village is recognised as an Area of Great Landscape Value.
