Southern Pines station is a train station located in Southern Pines, North Carolina, served by Amtrak's Silver Star train. The street address is 235 Northwest Broad Street, and is located in the heart of historic downtown Southern Pines. The station was originally built by a predecessor of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in 1898, renovated in 1948, and restored to its 1948 design in 2004. There is no Amtrak ticket office at this station, but there is "Quik-Trak" machine for automated ticketing.

It was developed between the 1883 and 1940 and includes notable examples of Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Located in the district is the separately listed James Boyd House. Other notable buildings include Duncraig Manor, Loblolly, Seaboard Air Line Passenger Depot, Seaboard Air Line Freight Station, Sadelson Pharmacy-Tourist Building, Powell Furniture and Undertaking Building, Belvedere Hotel Building (1904), Arcade Building (1917), Princess Theatre / Carolina Theatre Building, Southern Pines Public Library (1939), U. S. Post Office (1937), First Baptist Church (1899), Church of Wide Fellowship (1927), and Emmanuel Episcopal Church (1926).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

James Boyd House, also known as Weymouth, is a historic home located at Southern Pines, Moore County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Aymar Embury II and built in the 1920s. It is a large, rambling Colonial Revival style brick dwelling. It consists of a five-bay, two-story central block flanked by two-story hyphens and wings. It was built by historical novelist James Boyd after World War I. Since 1979, the building has housed the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Southern Pines Golf Course is a golf course in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The course first opened in 1906 and played out by Donald Ross in the 1910. The Southern Pines Elks Club owned the course between 1951 and 2020. Southern Pines was purchased in 2020 and renovated by architect Kyle Franz in 2021 as a 6,900 yard par 70 course.

Shaw House, also known as the Old Shaw Homestead, is a historic home located near Southern Pines, Moore County, North Carolina. It is dated to the early-19th century, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, three-bay, frame dwelling with Federal / Greek Revival style design elements. The house has massive, single-shoulder, dressed sandstone and brick end chimneys, a gable roof, and full-width engaged front porch. It has a rear ell added in the late-19th or early-20th century. Shaw House is thought to be one of the oldest surviving houses in Moore County.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Minjee Lee won the second of her two major titles, four strokes ahead of runner-up Mina Harigae. Ingrid Lindblad finished leading amateur at tied 11th. She beat the amateur scoring records over 18, 36 and 54 holes and tied the 72-hole amateur record in the tournament.Pine Needles previously hosted the championship in 1996, 2001, and 2007, becoming the first course to host the tournament four times.

Defending champion Annika Sörenstam retained the title, six strokes ahead of runner-up Kris Tschetter. It was the second of her ten major titles; her third came nearly five years later. ESPN and NBC Sports televised the tournament. Sörenstam was the sixth of seven to win consecutive titles at the U.S. Women's Open, most recently accomplished by Karrie Webb in 2001, also at Pine Needles. The championship returned to the venue for a third time in 2007, won by Cristie Kerr. This was the first women's major with a winner's share of $200,000 or more; the U.S. Women's Open became the tour's richest major this year, passing the LPGA Championship.

Cristie Kerr won the first of her two major titles, two strokes ahead of runners-up Lorena Ochoa and Angela Park. The event was televised by ESPN and NBC Sports. Due to weather delays, the third round began on Saturday afternoon and was completed on Sunday morning. Kerr shot 66 (−5) to gain the 54-hole lead at 209 (−4), one stroke ahead of top-ranked Ochoa, Morgan Pressel, and Jiyai Shin.Pine Needles previously hosted the championship in 1996 and 2001; it joined Atlantic City Country Club (1948, 1965, 1975) as the only courses to host three U.S. Women's Opens.

This was the second of four major championships on the LPGA Tour in 2001. Defending champion Karrie Webb repeated as champion, eight strokes ahead of runner-up Se Ri Pak, the largest margin in 21 years. Webb became the seventh to win consecutive titles at the U.S. Women's Open, and the win was the fifth of her seven major titles. Pine Needles previously hosted the championship in 1996 and it returned in 2007.

The 1972 Titleholders Championship was contested from May 26–29 at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. It was the 28th and final edition of the Titleholders Championship, following a six-year hiatus. It was the only edition not played at the Augusta Country Club. This event was won by Sandra Palmer.

The club's golf course was designed by Donald Ross.The club hosted the U.S. Women's Open in 1996, 2001, 2007, and 2022, and staged the last Titleholders Championship in 1972. Those tournaments were won by Annika Sörenstam, Karrie Webb, Cristie Kerr, Minjee Lee, and Sandra Palmer respectively. It hosted the 1991 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur, won by Phyllis Preuss and hosted the 2019 U.S. Senior Women's Open, won by Helen Alfredsson.
