Saarbrücken (German pronunciation: [zaːɐ̯ˈbʁʏkn̩] ; French: Sarrebruck [saʁbʁyk]; Rhine Franconian: Saarbrigge [zaːˈbʁɪɡə]; Luxembourgish: Saarbrécken [zaːˈbʀekən]; Latin: Saravipons, lit. 'The Bridge(s) across the Saar river') is the capital and largest city of the state of Saarland, Germany. Saarbrücken is Saarland's administrative, commercial and cultural centre and is next to the French border. The modern city of Saarbrücken was created in 1909 by the merger of three towns, Saarbrücken, St. Johann, and Malstatt-Burbach. It was the industrial and transport centre of the Saar coal basin. Products included iron and steel, sugar, beer, pottery, optical instruments, machinery, and construction materials. Historic landmarks in the city include the stone bridge across the Saar (1546), the Gothic church of St. Arnual, the 18th-century Saarbrücken Castle, and the old part of the town, the Sankt Johanner Markt (Market of St. Johann). In the 20th century, Saarbrücken was twice separated from Germany: from 1920 to 1935 as capital of the Territory of the Saar Basin and from 1947 to 1956 as capital of the Saar Protectorate.

The Battle of Saarbrücken was the first major engagement between the French Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia during the Franco-Prussian War. The battle took place on 2 August 1870, around the city of Saarbrücken.

The Basilica of St. John the Baptist (German: Basilika St. Johannes der Täufer ) also called Saarbrücken Basilica Is a catholic basilica located in the market of St. John (St. Johannes) in Saarbrücken in Germany.The temple of St. John was administered at the time of the Reformation by a noble Protestant and only one chapel, the chapel of St. John, was assigned to those who remained faithful to the Catholic faith. In the eighteenth century, under the French government of Louis XIV, the Catholic population grew. Next, they financed the construction of a Basilica, which was the only religious building built on the site for a hundred years. The Basilica of St. John was built on the site of the chapel of the same name by the architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel between 1754 and 1758. The Basilica was remodeled, destroyed and restored several times. The interior has been redesigned according to the original baroque between 1972 and 1975. The Basilica obtained its present name by a decision of Pope Paul VI, who made it a Basilica. The Basilica is part of a parish with five churches . In addition to Catholic masses, organ concerts are regularly held.

The Saarland Museum is an art museum in Saarbrücken, Saarland, Germany. It is spread across three sites, each with a different specialism.

The Hochschule für Musik Saar is a conservatory of music in Saarbrücken, Germany and dates back to 1947. From 1994 until 2002, it was named Hochschule des Saarlandes für Musik und Theater (University of Music and Drama Saarbrücken). Since 2012, the rector is Prof. Wolfgang Mayer. As of 2019, approximately 450 students are enrolled and taught by 150 teachers in courses and classes for musicians and music teachers.

Sankt Johann is part of the city of Saarbrücken in Saarland, Germany. It lies on the right bank of the Saar, opposite historic Saarbrücken, and is 79 kilometres (49 mi) northeast of Metz, France. Sankt Johann got its name from a chapel erected there. From 1321 to 1859 it formed a single town with Saarbrücken, and then was united to form one municipality with Saarbrücken and Malstatt-Burbach. It joined with the former Saarbrücken, Burbach-Malstatt, and Sankt Arnual to form the present-day city of Saarbrücken in 1909.

Theater Saarbrücken, officially Saarländisches Staatstheater since 1971, is the state theatre of Saarland in its capital Saarbrücken, Germany. It has several divisions (opera, drama, dance, concert) and offers annually around 30 new productions in around 700 events for more than 200,000 people. Its venues are Großes Haus (Big House), Alte Feuerwache (Old Fire Station), Congresshalle (Conference Hall) and sparte4 (area 4). While theatre in Saarbrücken has a long history, the present main venue was completed in 1938, with plans commissioned by the Nazi regime.

The Landtag of the Saarland is the state diet of the German federal state of Saarland. It convenes in Saarbrücken and currently consists of 51 members of five parties. The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) is the largest party in the Landtag with 29 seats, an absolute majority that allows the party to govern without a coalition. The 2022 elections marked the first time that the SPD had won the state in 20 years.

Saarbrücken Castle (German: Schloss Saarbrücken) is a Baroque château in Saarbrücken, the capital of Saarland. It is located in the district of Alt-Saarbrücken on the left bank of the Saar. Earlier, a medieval castle and a Renaissance castle stood on the same site.

The Platz des Unsichtbaren Mahnmals – or in English, the Place of the Invisible Memorial – is a memorial to Jewish cemeteries. It is located in Saarbrücken, capital of the German state of the Saarland. To the visitor, the memorial is completely invisible – it only appears as a sign at the place, reading "Platz des Unsichtbaren Mahnmals". In April 1990, art professor Jochen Gerz and several of his students began, in secrecy, to dig up cobblestones from the place in front of the Saarbrücken castle. The underside of the stones were then engraved with the names of German Jewish cemeteries, and afterwards they were returned to the place, with the inscription facing downwards. They chose the fore court of Saarbrücken Castle because a dependency of the Secret State Police, or Gestapo, was located in the castle during the time of national socialism. In August 1991, the idea was taken up by the city council of Saarbrücken, and it decided to implement it legally. In the end, a total of 2146 location names of Jewish cemeteries, which had existed until their destruction by the Nazi regime in 1933, were engraved into the cobblestones, and again placed back into the fore court of the castle. The memorial intends to portray the neglect of the German past.

Landesbank Saar (short SaarLB) is a public-law corporation established in Saarbrücken and the largest credit and mortgage bond institute in Saarland. In 2017, the balance sheet total was around €14 billion. Core markets are Saarland and France, especially the northeast of the country.Until December 31, 2013, shareholders of SaarLB were Bayerische Landesbank (BayernLB, 49.9 percent), Saarland (35.2 percent) and Sparkassenverband Saar (14.9 percent), after Bayerische Landesbank in the course of the financial crisis sold a share of 25.2 percent for 65 million euros to Saarland. This share ratio changed as of September 30, 2013, as Saarland Sparkassen converted previously held silent participations into so-called "hard core capital". At this date the participation rates amounted to 43.92 percent for BayernLB, 30.98 percent for Saarland and 25.1 percent for Sparkassenverband Saar.As of 1 January 2014, BayernLB sold its remaining shares to Saarland, so that now Saarland is involved with 74.9 percent and Sparkassenverband with 25.1 percent in SaarLB.

Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof or Saarbrücken Central Station also called Eurobahnhof Saarbrucken, is the principal railway station in the German city of Saarbrücken and the largest station in the Saarland, a German state on the border with France. Around 10 million passengers use the station annually. The station is operated by DB Station&Service as a category 2 station, served by regional and long-distance trains.
