It is situated on the western slopes of the Gran Sasso, at about 800 meters above sea level, along the state road 17-bis that from Bazzano goes up to Campo Imperatore passing through Paganica, Tempera, Assergi and Fonte Cerreto, once an autonomous municipality before being aggregated to the capital and now seat of the ninth district of the municipality. In literature, it is known, above all, through the novella in rima entitled La Bella di Camarda, a work by Emidio Cappelli, published in 1857 and reprinted in 1858.

The village of San Gregorio is 12.11 kilometers from the town of L'Aquila, of which it is considered a suburb community (Fraction or Frazione). Italy's SS17 Highway is its main transportation artery. The village sits near an active earthquake fault zone in the Valley of the Aterno-Pescara.

Chiesa di Santa Maria ad Cryptas (Italian for Church of Santa Maria ad Cryptas) is a Middle Ages church in Fossa, Province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo).

Aveia was an ancient town of the Vestini and Roman former bishopric, which remains a Latin Catholic titular see. Its site is on the Via Claudia Nova, c. 10 km south-east of L'Aquila, N.E. of the modern village of Fossa, in central Italy's Abruzzo region. Some remains of ancient buildings still exist, and the name Aveia still clings to the place. The identification was first made by V. M. Giovenazzi in Della Città di Aveia ne' Vestini (1773). Paintings in the church of S. Maria ad Cryptas, of the 12th to 15th centuries, are important in the history of art. An inscription of a stationarius of the 3rd century, sent here on special duty (no doubt for the suppression of brigandage), was found here in 1902.

The Orto Botanico dell'Università dell'Aquila, also known as the Orto Botanico di Collemaggio, is a botanical garden in L'Aquila, Abruzzo, central Italy, operated by the University of L'Aquila. Measuring 5.5 hectares, it is located near the basilica di Collemaggio. The garden contains about 460 species, including many indigenous to Abruzzo such as Adonis flammea subsp. cortiana, Anchusa hybrida, Campanula cavolinii, Cerastium scarani, Dianthus ciliatus, and Linaria purpurea.

The Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo is hosted in the Forte Spagnolo of L'Aquila.The Museum is on three floors: on the ground floor, there is the giant skeleton of an Archidiskon meridionalis (improperly called mammoth, a prehistoric "elephant") found a few miles from Aquila in 1954, and an archeological section with pieces of the Italic pre-Roman period, a section with inscriptions and pieces from the Roman towns in Abruzzo, among them a fine Roman calendar from Amiternum (25 AD). On the first floor the medieval and modern art section, with works of Abruzzese artists of the centuries 13-17th such as: the polyptych by Jacobello del Fiore; a Processional Cross by Nicola da Guardiagrele, a group of wooden and terracotta sculptures such as a St Sebastian by Silvestro dell'Aquila and another by Saturnino Gatti; paintings by Flemish and Roman and Neapolitan artists such as Sebastiano Conca, Giulio Cesare Bedeschini, Francesco Solimena, Francesco de Mura; finally the contemporary art section with such artists as M. Vaccari, Renato Guttuso, Virgilio Guidi, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Orfeo Tamburi, and Remo Brindisi.

Stadio Tommaso Fattori is a multi-use stadium in L'Aquila, Italy. It is currently used mostly for football and rugby union matches and the home of L'Aquila Calcio and L'Aquila Rugby. Inaugurated in 1933, the stadium holds 10,000 people. It hosted some of the football preliminaries for the 1960 Summer Olympics.
