Carlatton and Cumrew

Albyfield is a hamlet in Cumbria, England.

Cumrew is a small village and civil parish in north-east Cumbria, England. About 7 miles (11 km) south of Brampton and 13 miles (21 km) east of Carlisle. The population of the civil parish taken at the 2001 census was 85, increasing to 131 at the 2011 Census.

The Geltsdale Reservoir railway was a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge industrial railway used during the construction of Castle Carrock Reservoir near Carlisle in Cumbria.

Castle Carrock Reservoir is an artificial open reservoir in the civil parish of Castle Carrock, south of the village, in the Cumberland district, in the ceremonial county of Cumbria, England. The reservoir is quite unusual in that it holds water from a different catchment to which it is located. In fact, no water is taken from its own catchment area, that of Castle Carrock Beck, which is culverted around the side of the reservoir. The reservoir takes water, via a 20" pipe, from the rivers New Water and Old Water near their confluence to form the River Gelt. The Castle Carrock reservoir then supplies a reservoir at Cumwhinton via a 16" pipe, for onward supply to Carlisle and the surrounding area via a 21" pipe. Cumwhinton Water Treatment Works pumps water from the nearby River Eden as well as taking water, by gravity, from Castle Carrock Reservoir. The reservoir contains a treatment works and is part of the wider Geltsdale Scheme, developed to provide water to Carlisle and its surrounding area. The reservoir sits at 151 metres above sea level, has a surface area of 0.18 square kilometres, and a mean depth of 4.674 metres. The reservoir is currently owned and operated by United Utilities.

Newbiggin is a small hamlet in Cumbria, England. Cumrew beck flows north-west through Newbiggin eventually joining the Eden close to Armathwaite. The village contains many houses of a traditional design, a historic chapel (now a private home) and several large-acreage farms. On the fells around the village there are traces of the old mines that used to operate in the area, as well as the skeletons of lime kilns. A track from the village leads up to new water river, which can be followed north to Castle Carrock. There is a pub, The Blue Bell Inn.

Carlatton is a civil parish in the Cumberland district of Cumbria, England. It lies north-west of Cumrew, with which it shares a parish council, 5 miles (8 km) south of Brampton, and 8 miles (13 km) south-east of Carlisle. In 2021 the parish had a population of 48.

Castle Carrock is a village and civil parish on the B6413 road, in the Cumberland District, in the English county of Cumbria about 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Brampton. The population of the Civil Parish was 303 in 2001 and rose to 328 by 2011. It has a pub, The Duke of Cumberland, a primary school and many walks. More recently Castle Carrock is known for 'Cumbria's Most Friendly Music Festival' Music on the Marr which takes place each year at the end of July. It attracts a diverse crop of music, entertainers, artists and poets from around the world. Castle Carrock is surrounded on the south by Leath Ward, on the west by Cumrew and Carlatton, on the north by Brampton and Hayton, and on the east by Northumberland.

Geltsdale is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Castle Carrock, in the Cumberland district, in the ceremonial county of Cumbria, England, to the southeast of Castle Carrock village. In 2001 the parish had a population of 6. From 1858 Geltsdale was a civil parish in its own right. On 1 April 2003 the parish was abolished and merged with Castle Carrock. The Geltsdale Reservoir railway ran in the vicinity. The local landscapes are under several levels of protection. Two of the protected areas cover a large area: the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the North Pennines Moors Special Protection Area (147,276 ha) Geltsdale & Glendue Fells Site of Special Scientific Interest has an area of 8,059 ha, and is one of the SSSIs which underlie the SPA. Geltsdale RSPB reserve is a 5,000 ha nature reserve within the SSSI. It mainly moorland and is managed by the Royal Society for Protection of Birds for upland birds such as black grouse and hen harrier.

Low House is an 18th-century Georgian manor house located one and a half miles north of the village of Armathwaite in the Eden Valley of Cumbria, England. It sits close to the River Eden, which flows through Cumbria up to the Solway Firth. The house is situated within Wetheral civil parish.

Croglin is the name of a village, former civil parish, beck (stream), and grange now in the parish of Ainstable, in the Westmorland and Furness district, Cumbria, England. Croglin is a quiet picturesque fellside village between the Pennines and the River Eden, about 14 miles (23 km) south-east of Carlisle. The surrounding land is used for agriculture, mainly sheep. A small river, Croglin Water, flows through the valley down into the River Eden. In 1931 the parish had a population of 198. A village has existed in this location for a long time and may originally have been two separate hamlets. There has been a church on the current site since the Norman period, but the present building, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was erected in 1878 to a design by J. Hewison of Edinburgh. There is a post office, which opens two mornings a week, and a pub, the Robin Hood. Because of its proximity to the Scottish borders, the village was often raided by the Border Reivers in the 15th century. The lower two stories of a pele tower still survive, incorporated into the house formerly known as Croglin Vicarage, now The Old Pele, a testament to that need for defence. A toy manufacturer, Croglin Toys, was set up in the village in 1980, but now operates from nearby Lazonby. A small dairy in the area, Thornby Moor Dairy, founded in 1979, has developed a type of cheese made from ewe's milk, known as Croglin Cheese.
