Bolt Head to Bolt Tail

Bolberry is a hamlet on the south coast of Devon, England. The village is mentioned in Domesday Book in 1066 and 1086, which shows the land was of little value at the time.Along with Bolberry Down it falls within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.Bolberry Farmhouse dates from the 16th century, while Bolberry House Farm was built in the mid 19th century.

Bolberry Down is a clifftop area on the coast of Devon, England. The headland of Bolt Tail lies to the west and Bolt Head and the town of Salcombe to the east. It is one of the longest coastal areas owned by the National Trust and lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The down provides views across the English Channel. Bolberry Down was the site of a Decca Navigator station in the SOUTH WEST BRITISH 1B chain which operated from 1952 until 31 March 2000, covering the south-west approaches. The visible sign of this system were three 150ft tubular masts and these were located to the east of the access road to Bolberry Down, together with the former bungalows for the staff. One mast remains in use today for other purposes.

Malborough is a village and civil parish in the South Hams region of Devon. The village is located on the A381 between Kingsbridge and Salcombe, and is a popular village for tourists, with many holiday homes located around the village. In 2011 the parish had a population of 971. Malborough can be seen from many miles away throughout the South Hams region, due to its magnificent church spire, which is located at the highest point of the village. The Church of All Saints dates from the 13th Century and is built from local Soar stone. The Right Honourable John Stapleton de Courcy, 28th Baron Kingsale, is interred in the churchyard, with other members of the de Courcy family. The village is home to a small co-op supermarket and a petrol station. The village has an Anglican and a Baptist church, two pubs, a large village hall and playing fields with children's play equipment and an outdoor gym, a hotel, a primary school, a post office and a football team. Royal Air Force Bolt Head or more simply RAF Bolt Head is a former Royal Air Force satellite airfield 1 mile (1.6 km) south west of Salcombe on the south Devon coast, England from 1941 to 1945. During the Second World War it was used as a satellite for RAF Exeter. There were two runways, of 3,680 ft at 45° and 4,200 ft at 120°.The Ground Control Interceptor Station (GCI) RAF Hope Cove was established on the northeast side of the field in 1941 to direct fighter operations in the English Channel. Unlike the airfield, Hope Cove remained in use into the 1990s. Today the World War II buildings are almost all gone but a memorial to the airfield's war-time history exists in the centre of the site, two notable post-war buildings survive including a large R6 Rotor bunker (used until 1994 as a Regional Seat of Government) and a grass airstrip is still used occasionally by light aircraft. The landowners also hosted an air display there in 2009 which saw a Hurricane and Spitfire visit the airfield for the first time since the war.

SS Maine was a British steamship launched in 1905 as a 3600-ton cargo steamer with a triple-expansion engine. She was torpedoed and sunk on 21 November 1917 by UC-17, about 10 miles (16 km) off Dartmouth. She sank "gracefully, upright and on an even keel" and sits on shingle 36 metres (118 ft) deep at 50°12.750′N 3°50.955′W. The Torbay British Sub-Aqua Club bought the wreck for £100 in 1962 and salvaged the bronze propeller, selling it for £800. The propeller was proudly displayed on a plinth outside Safeway supermarket in Paignton town centre, until the redevelopment of the site in the early 2000s. The propeller was being sold for scrap, but was rescued by a farmer and now is in a field in Kingsteignton.

Galmpton is a small hamlet near Thurlestone, Devon, England. It is in the South Hams district and is five miles west of Salcombe. In 1870-72 Galmpton had a population of 176 as recorded in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales. Galmpton was recorded in the Domesday Book as Walementone/Walenimtona

Royal Air Force Hope Cove or more simply RAF Hope Cove is a former Royal Air Force radar station. It is located about 1 mile (1.6 km) south west of Salcombe on the south Devon coast, England, co-located with the former RAF Bolt Head airstrip, which was the RAF closed in 1945 but remains in service for general aviation to this day. Hope Cove was originally built in 1941 to host an AMES Type 7 ground control interception (GCI) station. In the 1950s it joined the ROTOR network and was upgraded with an AMES Type 80 radar. It was one of six Type 80 stations that featured a R6 bunker, which was semi-sunken. When the GCI role was moved to the new Master Radar Stations, the bunker was made redundant and taken over by the Home Office as a regional seat of government (RSG) bunker. Plans to move this station to Norton Manor Camp were never carried out, and it remained in use as a RSG (although the name change on occasion) until 1994 with the ending of the Cold War. The bunker is currently a Grade II Listed Building.

South Huish is a village and civil parish about 4 miles south west of Kingsbridge, in the South Hams district, in the county of Devon, England. The parish includes Galmpton and Hope Cove. According to the 2011 census the parish had a population of 473, the parish had an estimated population of 436 in 2017. The parish touches West Alvington, South Milton and Malborough. The parish is in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

St Andrew's Church is a ruined church in South Huish, South Hams, Devon, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches.

Hope Cove Lifeboat Station, is a former Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Lifeboat Station, located at Hope Cove, a seaside hamlet approximately 15 nautical miles (28 km) south-east of Plymouth, on the south east coast of Devon. A lifeboat was first placed at Hope Cove by the RNLI in 1878. After 52 years of operation, Hope Cove RNLI Lifeboat Station closed in 1930. SS Jebba was a steamship that was built in Middlesbrough in 1896 and wrecked on the south coast of Devon in 1907. She was launched as Albertville for the Compagnie Belge-Maritime du Congo (CBMC), and was renamed Jebba when Elder, Dempster & Co acquired her in 1898. She was the first of four CBMC ships to be called Albertville, and the first of two Elder, Dempster ships to be called Jebba.

Bolt Tail is a headland in Devon, England, immediately to the southwest of Hope Cove in the South Hams district, at grid reference SX670397. Bolt Tail is the site of an Iron Age promontory fort, although little evidence now remains of this structure; it occupied a classic promontory defended from inland by a linear earthwork at some 60 metres above sea level. Bolt Tail marks the western end of a coastal walk through National Trust land to Salcombe, via Bolberry Down and Bolt Head at the mouth of the Salcombe Estuary. It offers views to Bantham Beach and Burgh Island. On a day with good visibility it is possible to see far down the coast into Cornwall, as far as Dodman Point. Under very exceptional atmospheric conditions the Lizard Point in Cornwall is visible from Bolt Tail. The SS Jebba ran aground near here in 1907.Nearby, a similar fate had befallen the 90-gun ship-of-the-line HMS Ramillies in February 1760.
