Dayton View Triangle Historic District

Colonel White High School was built in 1929 in Dayton Ohio. It stood on the corner of Wabash and Niagara in Upper Dayton View until it was demolished in 2008.Colonel White was named for Colonel William Jeremiah White, an officer who fought in the Spanish–American War. It was named for White because he had been superintendent of Dayton Schools in 1888 and lived in Lower Dayton View.Initially, Colonel White school was a junior high school. An auditorium, east wing, and south wing were added during the 1950s and 1960s as the school became a high school. Briefly, students attended Colonel White for their first two years, and then would attend Fairview High School for Junior and Senior years.In 1957, Jack A. DeVelbiss (1927–1988) became the music director of Colonel White High School. DeVelbiss is responsible for creating the "Little Colonels," a drill team famous for precision military-style marching. He also created a range of music programs and directed several musicals in the newly-built auditorium. This began Colonel White's legacy as an award-winning music and theatre school.As the demographics of Dayton View shifted, the high school was the cite of racial unrest. Rioting erupted in cities across America. A riot broke out in West Dayton when white men in a car shot Lester Mitchell at 3 am on September 1, 1966. Dayton View was a neighborhood that was open to Black residents. It had a large Jewish Community and was home to three Synagogues at the time. It was also home to Appalachian migrants and southern and eastern European immigrant communities. By the time Dayton Public Schools were ordered to desegregate, Colonel White was already racially balanced and was exempt from busing.In 1983, the name of the school was changed to The Colonel White High School for the Performing Arts. The land it stood on was eventually sold to Frederick Holley for $4,290.

Good Samaritan Hospital was a full-service hospital on the west side of Dayton, Ohio. The hospital closed in 2018. Prior to closing, the hospital had 3,300 employees and 577 beds. Good Samaritan Hospital had won numerous awards and was constantly recognized for its excellence in health care delivery and safety by places such as U.S. News & World Report, HealthGrades, and others. The hospital was a teaching hospital with the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University as the affiliated university. The hospital was a part of Premier Health Partners. The Dayton Heart and Vascular Hospital was owned by Good Samaritan Hospital and was located on the hospital's main campus. On January 17, 2018, it was announced Good Samaritan Hospital would close by the end of the year. The final patients were discharged on July 20, 2018. and the hospital officially closed on July 23, 2018. The closure of the hospital was considered highly controversial due to its status as the only hospital within Dayton's impoverished and largely black west side. A complaint regarding the closure was filed with the U.S. Department of Health and the closure was met with a number of protests. In November 2018, the scope of the civil rights complaint was expanded, alleging that Premier Health practices a pattern of discriminatory investment in regards to its placement of properties. Upon completion of the complaint investigation, the Office for Civil Rights found no civil rights violations in the hospital closure.

The Kenilworth Avenue Historic District is a historic district in the northwestern portion of Dayton, Ohio, United States. Composed largely of houses constructed after the Great Flood of 1913, the district features examples of several prominent architectural styles, and it has received both local and federal recognition. Following the 1913 flood, many wealthy residents decided to flee the older parts of the city, located in the floodplain along the Great Miami River. The result was the development of Kenilworth Avenue, whose houses feature a range of design modes, including the Italianate, Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, and Neoclassical styles. Also known as "Dayton View Heights" (the district is just three blocks north of the larger Dayton View Historic District), the Kenilworth Avenue development includes twenty separate buildings, located on both sides of the street from Redfern Avenue west to its end at Salem Avenue. Seventeen of these buildings qualified as contributing properties to the district, while three were considered non-contributing: the district's period of significance was held to have ended in 1949, and some of the buildings were constructed in the 1950s and 1960s. Among the oldest properties in the district is the house at the corner of Kenilworth and Salem, which was constructed in 1906. When the street was developed, many of the new residents desired to live in a park-like setting, and as a result, the street's well-preserved landscaping is itself a significant part of the historic district.On March 1, 2006, Dayton City Commission modified the neighborhood's zoning classification by designating the area a local historic district, and it was subsequently added to the National Register of Historic Places five months later. Federal designation places no restrictions on the residents' abilities to modify or destroy buildings in the district, but local designation means that local authorities must approve changes to the district's properties. When designated, Kenilworth Avenue was the city's twelfth official historic district, and its eighteenth National Register district. It is one of six northwest-side historic districts, along with Dayton View, Grafton-Rockwood, Squirrel-Forest, McPherson Town, and Steele's Hill-Grafton Hill.

The 1957 PGA Championship was the 39th PGA Championship, held July 17–21 at Miami Valley Golf Club in Dayton, Ohio. In the last PGA Championship played under the match play format, Lionel Hebert won 2 & 1 over Dow Finsterwald, who won the following year, the first as a 72-hole stroke play event. Defending champion Jack Burke Jr. lost in the second round to Milon Marusic, 2 & 1.At the time, it was not yet known that this was the last at match play, the decision to switch to stroke play was announced during the November meetings.The Open Championship was held two weeks earlier in Scotland at St Andrews; neither Hebert nor Finsterwald played in 1957 (or ever).

Shawen Acres, also known as the Montgomery County Children's Home, is a historic complex in Dayton, Ohio. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 9, 1991.It was originally designed as an orphans home. Dr. Charles Shawen donated 19 acres (77,000 m2) to the county March 21, 1926 for "wayward and homeless children." The complex comprises a main building, annex, gym, and 10 English-style cottages in a park-like setting.

The Central Avenue Historic District is a small segment of the larger Grafton Hill neighborhood of Dayton, Ohio, United States. Composed of just two blocks near the border between Grafton Hill and Dayton View, the historic district comprises a cohesive collection of houses dating primarily from the turn of the 20th century, and it has been named a historic site. Central Avenue is a prominent example of Dayton's earliest suburbanizing trends, having been built for people who were leaving the original boundaries of the city in and around what is now downtown, along the Great Miami River. At this time, around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, Dayton was undergoing rapid increases in population and commerce, due to unprecedented industrial growth. As a result, those who were leaving the older parts of the city and moving to Central Avenue were the nouveau riche, who were becoming rich for the first time as a result of wise investment in the city's booming industries.The historic district comprises nineteen buildings: eighteen contributing and one non-contributing. Primarily built as single-family houses, the buildings in the district lie along both sides of Central Avenue both north and south of its intersection with Federal Street, but in no direction does the district extend more than one block from the Federal-Central intersection: parts of Central in these two blocks, as well as all territory to the north, east, and south, comprise Grafton Hill's historic district, and a small non-historic strip is located along Salem Avenue, separating Grafton Hill from the larger Dayton View Historic District farther west. Its identity is not always kept separate from Grafton Hill; some community events, such as walking tours, lump these two blocks of Central Avenue with the surrounding neighborhood.Central Avenue was built at the height of the Victorian era in architecture, and many of the houses display Victorian styles such as Queen Anne, although later modes such as bungalows can also be found. The district's most prominent houses, located at 240 and 338 Central, are both Queen Annes. The built environment on Central Avenue has been well preserved to the point that the neighborhood was designated a historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places one week before Christmas 1982. Since that time, the neighborhood has gained further recognition via community-organized walking tours and from Preservation Dayton, which recognized two homeowners for their restoration of the house at 330 Central Avenue.

The Paul Laurence Dunbar House was the 1904–1906 home of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar in Dayton, Ohio. It is a historic house museum owned by the state of Ohio and operated by Dayton History on behalf of the Ohio Historical Society; it is also part of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. It is located at 219 Paul Laurence Dunbar Street (formerly called North Summit Street) in Dayton.

The Dunbar Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district on S Paul Laurence Dunbar Street in Dayton, Ohio. The district is famous for being the home of Paul Laurence Dunbar. On June 30, 1980, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places A larger area known as Wright-Dunbar (or Mound-Horace) is bounded roughly by US 35, Broadway Street, West Third Street and the Great Miami River. This district has also been known for housing many ethnic groups such as Hungarians, Romanians, and African Americans. After World War I the Wright-Dunbar area was known as the cultural and commercial center of Dayton's African American community. Many black-owned stores, shops, and theatres gained popularity in Dayton, such as the "Palace Theatre". Decades later, in the 1950s and 1960s, much of the area was damaged during riots, urban renewal, and the construction of Interstate 75. Later, through an effort by the city of Dayton and the county, many of the houses in the district were brought back to life again.

Dayton Fire Station No. 14 is an historic structure at 1422 N. Main St. in Dayton, Ohio. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 27, 1980. It was designed by the Peters, Burns & Pretzinger firm.

Roosevelt High School was a public high school in Dayton, Ohio, United States, that was part of the Dayton Public Schools. The school was named for U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and opened in 1923. At the time of its construction, it was believed to have been the largest high school in the eastern U.S. Athletic teams competed in the Dayton City League and were known as the "Teddy Bears" or "Teddies" with school colors of red and white. The school closed in 1975 and the building was used for school district offices and other functions. It was demolished in 2008 to make way for the Dayton Boys Preparatory Academy, an elementary school for boys in grades kindergarten through eight, which opened in December 2010. Many architectural elements from the Roosevelt High School building were saved and incorporated into the new academy, and the area around the building is known as the Roosevelt Commons.
