Stroudwater Burying Ground

Stroudwater Historic District is a historic district in the Stroudwater neighborhood of Portland, Maine. The district encompasses an important early village in the Portland area, significant as a shipbuilding and mill site established by Thomas Westbrook in 1727. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The Tate House is a historic house museum at 1270 Westbrook Street, near the Fore River in the Stroudwater neighborhood of Portland, Maine, United States. The house, one of the oldest in Portland, was built in 1755 for George Tate, a former Royal Navy captain who was sent by a contractor to the Navy to oversee the felling and shipment of trees for use as masts. Because of the house's comparatively remote location away from central Portland, it (along with a number of other homes that make up the Stroudwater Historic District) survived Portland's numerous fires intact. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark as a rare surviving example of a once-common colonial housing form, the clerestory gambrel roof. Since 1935 it has been a museum operated by the National Society of the Colonial Dames.

Stroudwater Falls is a manmade dam in Portland, Maine, dating to the 1850s. The dam is fed by the Stroudwater River which runs from Duck Pond, in Buxton, Maine, to the Fore River (Maine) in Portland. The dam, located near the Westbrook Street bridge, prevents tidal waters from the Fore River from flowing up the Stroudwater River’s channel. The dam was built in the 1850s for floating logs down the Stroudwater River to the Fore River, and was expanded in the 1900s for ice harvesting. The dam can store a maximum of 221,940 cubic meters of water, and its normal reservoir storage is 187,416 cubic meters, according to city records. The dam was damaged prior to 2012 when heavy rains washed debris down the river and it struck the dam.

The Stroudwater River is a 15.2-mile-long (24.5 km) river located mostly in Cumberland County, Maine. The river begins as a small stream at Duck Pond in Buxton and grows as it flows through Buxton, Gorham, Westbrook, and finally Portland before emptying into the Fore River at Stroudwater falls in Portland's Stroudwater neighborhood. Several smaller streams flow into the river in Buxton and Gorham, including Deering Brook, Gully Brook, Fogg Brook and Silver Brook. The Fore River Sanctuary, a nature preserve with footpaths and wooden bridges over wetlands, is located near the confluence of the Stroudwater and Fore rivers.

The Fore River is a short horn-shaped estuary, approximately 5.7 miles (9.2 km) long, separating Portland and South Portland in Maine in the United States. Many of the port facilities of the Portland harbor are along the estuary, which is formed just southwest of Portland by the confluence of several creeks. The estuary was initially known as Levett's River, so named by the first English settler of the Casco Bay region, Capt. Christopher Levett. But shortly afterwards, the estuary came to have the name by which it is known today.The Stroudwater River flows into the Fore River estuary. The Cumberland and Oxford Canal connected the estuary with Sebago Lake via the Stroudwater River from 1832 through 1870. The estuary enters Casco Bay on the southeast edge of Portland. Like other coastal areas along the Gulf of Maine, it experiences moderately high tides, and thus the water level in the estuary and the harbor varies greatly throughout the day, leaving mud flats at low tide. It is spanned by the Pan Am Railways bridge and three highway bridges: the Casco Bay Bridge which connects Portland to South Portland, Veterans Memorial Bridge which carries Route 1, and a causeway which carries I-295.

The Fore River Sanctuary is an 85-acre (34 ha) protected area in Portland, Maine. Located in the Stroudwater neighborhood, the sanctuary is home of Jewell Falls, Portland's only natural waterfall and the former home of the Cumberland and Oxford Canal. It also includes a salt water marsh which attracts a number of different species of birds and small mammals. It is named after the nearby Fore River and was protected by the National Audubon Society prior to being given to Portland Trails. The land was donated to Portland Trails by Tom Jewell, one of the founders of Portland Trails, a non-profit urban land trust preserving lands throughout Greater Portland.

The Leonard Bond Chapman House is an historic house at 90 Capisic Street in Portland, Maine. Built between 1866 and 1868, it is a fine and distinctive local example of Second Empire architecture, and is notable as the home of one Portland's leading historians of the period, Leonard Bond Chapman. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Portland International Jetport (IATA: PWM, ICAO: KPWM, FAA LID: PWM) is a public airport two miles (3 km) west of downtown Portland, Maine, United States. It is owned and operated by the City of Portland. A portion of the Jetport's property, including the main runway, is located within the neighboring city of South Portland. PWM covers 726 acres (293 ha) of land.The airport is the busiest in the state. In 2018, the jetport handled more than two million passengers for the first time, breaking the previous record of 1.86 million set in 2017.The Jetport has benefited from service by low-cost carriers such as Southwest Airlines and JetBlue, as well as Portland's increased popularity as a tourist destination. A survey conducted in June 2011 found PWM to be the most affordable airport in the region, and the third most affordable in New England.In October 2011, PWM completed a $75 million renovation and expansion of its terminal to allow more airline service and more amenities for passengers.In 2020, PWM received $4.5 million in federal funds to construct a 1,200 ft-long (370 m) taxiway connecting runways.

Breakwater School is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational school in Portland, Maine. The school currently enrolls up to 180 students from toddler through eighth grade. The sixth through eighth grade program is experiential and integrative, consisting of a series of 6 to 7 week projects completed over the course of the school year. Breakwater was founded as a day care center, named Playtime Haven, by Frank and El Costa in 1956 after their son recovered from a serious illness. As it grew, it moved to a series of different locations in South Portland and Cape Elizabeth, until 1982 when it purchased its current location in Portland. Since then, the school has also been given a 21-acre nature preserve in nearby Cumberland which it uses regularly for field trips as part of the school's Science curriculum. The Executive Director is David Sullivan, previously a Teaching Principal at the Brooklin School in Brooklin, Maine, and the Academic Director is Maggie Lyon.

Long Creek Youth Development Center (LCYDC) is Maine's only secure juvenile facility. Established by the Maine Legislature in 1853 as the Maine State Reform School for Boys, it is both a detention center and a correctional facility, run by the Maine Department of Corrections. Located on Westbrook Street in South Portland, adjacent to Portland International Jetport, it is named for the Long Creek tributary of the Fore River on which it stands. The school was built in 1853, to a design by Boston architect Gridley James Fox Bryant, who had a specialization in prison design. The Arthur R. Gould School, which is attended by its inmates, was added in 1921. The State Reform School was renamed the State School for Boys in 1903, then the Boys Training Center in 1959. After the girls' reformatory school, the Stevens School, was closed in 1976, its inmates were transferred to the Boys Training Center, at which point it was renamed the Maine Youth Center. It was given its current name in 2001. The facility received Accreditation Status in 2006. Severe staffing shortages were reported in 2022. The campus is part of the State Reform School Historic District.

Andover College in South Portland, Maine began as the Andover Institute of Business in Portland in 1967; the name was changed to Andover College in 1977. The college was given accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) in 1998.

Memorial Stadium is a 5,200 seat multi-purpose outdoor stadium in Portland, Maine. It is located behind Deering High School in the suburban Deering Center neighborhood. In addition to hosting Deering High School sports it is the home stadium of the GPS Portland Phoenix, an amateur team in USL League Two. It's also the home field for the Southern Maine Raging Bulls of the semi-professional New England Football League.
