Bela Viaduct

The River Bela is a short (approximately 4 miles (6.5 km)) river in the county of Cumbria, England. It is in the ancient county of Westmorland. The river is formed by the confluence of Peasey Beck and Stainton Beck at Overthwaite. It runs through Beetham where it powers the Heron Corn Mill, and then flows through the deer park of Dallam Tower before skirting around the south of the village of Milnthorpe and joining the River Kent estuary between Sandside and Milnthorpe. At its mouth it was formerly crossed by the Sandside Viaduct on the Hincaster Branch Line railway from Arnside to Hincaster, demolished after the line was closed to passengers in 1942 and the track lifted in 1966. During World War II a prisoner of war camp was built beside the river near Whasset. After the war the camp became an open prison, and there is now a residential school on the site.

Dallam Tower is a grade I listed country house in Beetham parish, near Milnthorpe, South Lakeland, Cumbria, England. It is a member of the Historic Houses Association but is not open to the public except for occasional charity events, visits to the garden through the National Garden Scheme, and as a wedding venue.The house is described as "Early C18 with C17 core, remodelled early C19" and has rainwater pipes dated 1722; its interiors include panelling by Gillow of Lancaster. It has a deer park of 190 acres (75 ha), running down to the River Bela beside the A6 road with a prominent grade II listed 18th-century deer shelter. The shelter was damaged by fire in April 2021. A public road and several public footpaths run through the deer park. It has sometimes been erroneously referred to as Dallam Castle, and an earlier spelling was Dalham Tower. Before local government reorganisation in 1974 Dallam Tower was in the county of Westmorland.

Sandside was a railway station situated on the Hincaster Branch of the Furness Railway serving the hamlet and quarries of Sandside. The following station was Heversham, which was the last on the branch before the line joined what is now known as the West Coast Main Line at Hincaster Junction, south of Oxenholme. A Furness Railway local passenger train service (known locally as the Kendal Tommy for much of its life) operated through Sandside from Grange-over-Sands to Kendal between 1876 and its withdrawal in May 1942, when the station also closed to passengers. In July 1922, this FR service ran five times per day in each direction on weekdays. Through goods traffic ended in 1963 and the track was lifted north of here three years later, although the remaining stub down to Arnside was retained until final closure in 1972 to serve local quarries.

Sandside is a hamlet near Storth in Beetham parish, South Lakeland, Cumbria, England. Historically in Westmorland, it lies on the south shore of the estuary of the River Kent, between Arnside and Milnthorpe. There is one pub, The Ship, which is believed to date from 1671, one restaurant, The Kingfisher, under current ownership since 1999, and several commercial businesses. Sandside lies within the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A "Geotrail" leaflet has been published to guide visitors around the geology of the area. Sandside quarry has operated since at least 1901, and is now operated by Lafarge Tarmac, producing aggregate and asphalt.Sandside railway station, on the Hincaster Branch of the Furness Railway, was built in 1876 by Lancaster architects Paley and Austin. The line closed to passengers in 1942 and the station has been demolished. Until the building of the Arnside viaduct in 1857, Milnthorpe (upstream of Sandside) was a substantial port, handling cargoes including coal and guano. Its customs house was at Sandside, still existing as Crown Cottage with a datestone of 1728. Builders' merchants and other commercial operations occupy sites along the riverside which were previously used by the merchants of the port.

Dog Hole Cave is an archaeologically significant cave near Storth, Cumbria, England. Other names for the cave include Haverbrack Bank Pot, Haverbrack Dog Hole, Fairy Cave, The Dog Hole, and Doghole Cave. It consists of a largely excavated 12 metres (39 ft) shaft formed in Carboniferous limestone with 6 metres (20 ft) of steeply dipping phreatic tube at the bottom.It was originally excavated by J. W. ("Wilfred") Jackson in 1912. Further excavation was carried out by local scouts in the 1950s, and by researchers from Liverpool John Moores University in 2003, and in 2009 it was reported that "subsequent renewed caving activity has revealed more archaeology". Jackson found domestic animal bones (dogs, pigs) some of which are in the Natural History Museum, and the scouts also found human bones. The cave was gated in the 1980s to protect the archaeology, but inspection in 2003 showed that this had been destroyed.Radio carbon dating of the deposits have provided dates ranging from Romano-British to Early Medieval.

Milnthorpe is a village, civil parish, and former market town in Westmorland and Furness, Cumbria, England. It is 7 miles (11 km) south of Kendal. Historically in the county of Westmorland and on the A6, the village contains several old hostelries and hosts a market every Friday. The parish, which includes the village of Ackenthwaite, had a population of 2,199 according to the 2011 Census.

St Thomas' Church is in the village of Milnthorpe, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Kendal, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle.

Heversham railway station served the village of Heversham, near Carnforth, with trains to Kendal and Grange over Sands along the Hincaster branch line.

Dallam School is a mixed, 11-18 secondary school with academy status, located in Milnthorpe, Cumbria, England. It was founded in 1984 through the merger of Heversham Grammar School (established in 1613) and Milnthorpe Secondary School.

The Heron Corn Mill is a working 18th-century water mill on the River Bela at Beetham, Cumbria, England. The mill and its mill race are Grade II* listed, and in 2013 it was awarded a £939,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for major restoration work.The mill is open to visitors, with regular opportunities to see flour being milled. The 18th century barn is used as a venue for a range of community and educational activities.Within the mill site there is also a Kaplan turbine generating hydroelectricity, some of which is sold to the BillerudKorsnäs paper mill across the river.A fish ladder bypassing the weir allows salmon to pass up the river to breed.

St Peter's Church is in the village of Heversham, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Kendal, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.The parish was formerly much larger than now, and the church stands on one of the oldest Christian sites in the historic county of Westmorland. Its benefice is united with that of St Thomas, Milnthorpe.

Heversham is a village and civil parish in the Westmorland and Furness unitary authority area of Cumbria, England. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 647, increasing at the 2011 census to 699.It is situated above the marshes of the Kent estuary which gives some fine views, notably from Heversham Head where there is a toposcope. It has a variety of recreational facilities, including a fully functioning outdoor activities centre, tennis courts, bowling green and a playground. There are also rugby, football and hockey fields, as well as a cricket ground and pavilion.
