Ship Inn, Aldborough

St Andrew's Church is the parish church of Aldborough, North Yorkshire, a village in England. Aldborough is the site of the Roman town of Isurium Brigantum, and it is believed that the church lies on the site of a temple to Mercury. Two churches successively occupied the site before the present building was commenced, in the early 14th century. In 1318, the building was partly destroyed by raiders from Scotland, but it was repaired, with a north chantry chapel added in 1333, and the north aisle dating from about 1360. The clerestory dates from the 15th century, the roof was restored in the 16th century, and the south aisle was rebuilt in 1827. The church was Grade I listed in 1966. The church is built of red sandstone with a lead roof, and consists of a nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a chancel, a north chapel, and a west tower. The tower has angle buttresses, a west window with a pointed arch and hood mould, a clock face on the west side, two-light bell openings, and an embattled parapet. The east window has five lights and is in Perpendicular style. Inside, the roof is panelled, with bosses. There is Mediaeval stained glass in the north aisle, and 14th-century canopies which would originally have sheltered figures. There is a weathered Roman sculpture which may represent Mercury, a 16th-century panel depicting Daniel in the Lion's Den, and a brass of William of Adleburgh, dating from around 1360. There is 17th-century panelling in the chancel, moved from elsewhere, a communion rail from about 1700, and 18th-century breadshelves.

Aldborough is a village 7 miles (11 km) in the civil parish of Boroughbridge, to the north-east of Knaresborough, in North Yorkshire, England. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Aldborough was built on the site of a major Romano-British town, Isurium Brigantum. The Brigantes, the most populous Celtic tribe in the area at the time of the Roman occupation of Britain, used the settlement as a capital. Isurium may also have been the base of the Roman Legio VIIII Hispana.

The Battle Cross is a historic monument in Aldborough, North Yorkshire in England. The 18-foot high cross was erected to commemorate the Battle of Boroughbridge, which took place in 1322. The cross itself is probably 15th century, and it originally stood in the market place of Boroughbridge. In 1852, it was moved to the nearby village of Aldborough, in front of St Andrew's Church. It was Grade II listed in 1966. The cross consists of four diagonal shafts with spurs between, in three diminishing stages, with moulded capitals. The shafts of the middle stage have crocketed capitals, and the top stage has a crocketed capital. The top parts have been damaged, and Nikolaus Pevsner describes them as having been "reassembled with dubious accuracy".

Isurium or Isurium of the Brigantes (Latin: Isurium Brigantum) was a Roman fort and town in the province of Britannia at the site of present-day Aldborough in North Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom. Its remains—the Aldborough Roman Site—are in the care of English Heritage. The Roman road through the town formed a leg of both Dere Street—connecting Eboracum (York) to the Antonine Wall—and the Roman equivalent of Watling Street, which here connected Eboracum with Luguvalium (Carlisle). The modern village retains part of the Roman street plan and the church stands on the site of the forum.

Aldborough Hall is a historic building in Aldborough, North Yorkshire, a village in England. The hall was probably built in the early 17th century. A wing was added to the north in the Victorian period, but was later demolished. The building was Grade II* listed in 1952. It was put up for sale in 1999 for £950,000, at which time, it had seven bedrooms, five reception rooms, four bathrooms and two kitchens, with a tennis court in the grounds. The three-storey house is built of red brick, with stone dressings, quoins, and a Welsh slate roof. There are twin gables on the front and rear, and a full-height gabled bay projecting from the centre on three sides. On the west side is a three-storey canted bay window with an embattled parapet. The windows are mullioned and transomed. Inside the house are several fittings brought from elsewhere: a late medieval fireplace, a Jacobean staircase from Lymore, and panelling from various locations, most notably Ashley Park.

Aldborough Castle was located near the village of Aldborough, North Yorkshire, England. The castle was located to the south-west of the village, built upon the former Roman amphitheatre. The motte is called Studforth Hill. Studforth is a corruption of Stuteville, the family who at one time owned the castle. Constructed as a motte and bailey or ringwork fortification, it was likely to have been surrounded by a timber palisade. Originally held from the English crown, briefly held in chief by the Stuteville family between 1175 and 1205, before returning to Crown ownership. The castle was probably abandoned during the 13th century. The earthworks have been damaged by ploughing.

Milby is a hamlet and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is situated to the immediate north of Boroughbridge.

St James' Church is the parish church of Boroughbridge, a town in North Yorkshire, in England. The original St James' Church was a medieval chapel-of-ease to St Andrew's Church, Aldborough, located in what is now St James's Square. The current church was built on Church Lane in 1852, to a design by James Mallinson and Thomas Healey. It is in the Decorated style, but is a simple, pared-back design. C. P. Canfield describes the building as "a moderately large church... the subscribers got a lot of accommodation for their money". The tower is said to be a copy of the tower of the Mediaeval church. The building was Grade II listed in 1984. The church is built of sandstone with roofs of stone slate and tile. It consists of a nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chancel and a west tower. The tower has three stages, a north stair turret, stepped angle buttresses rising to embattled corner turrets, string courses, a west window with a pointed arch and hood mould, lancet windows and clock faces in the middle stage, two-light bell openings with hood moulds, and an embattled parapet. The east window has four lights, and stained glass by William Wailes. Re-set into the internal walls are late Norman architectural fragments. They form a random collection and, other than the possible arch of a priest's door, were set into the walls of the former church. These may have originally formed part of one or more earlier churches and have been used in reconstructing the chapel at Boroughbridge, perhaps after a raid by Scots in the early 13th century.

The River Tutt is a 8.7-mile (14 km) long tributary of the River Ure in North Yorkshire, England. The river rises near to the villages of Nidd and Scotton draining mainly arable land north eastwards before emptying into the Ure at Boroughbridge. Where the river joins the Ure in Boroughbridge, has been the site of significant historic flooding. An Environment Agency project to alleviate flooding on the river has seen diversion schemes and pumps added to prevent this.

Borough Bridge is a historic bridge across the River Ure in Boroughbridge, a town in North Yorkshire, in England. The bridge lies on what was the Great North Road, spanning the former boundary between the West and North Ridings of Yorkshire, and the parishes of Langthorpe and Boroughbridge. A timber bridge at the location was first recorded in the 12th century, and again in 1322, at the time of the Battle of Boroughbridge. In 1562, the bridge was rebuilt in stone. It was widened between 1782 and 1785 by John Carr of York and John Gott, surveyors for the North and West Ridings, respectively. The southern section of the bridge collapsed and had to be entirely reconstructed. The bridge was Grade II listed in 1966. The bridge is built of sandstone, and has three segmental arches. There are two pointed cutwaters on the east side and semicircular cutwaters on the west, carried up as buttresses. Under the arches are five wide ribs. The parapets continue beyond the bridge to the north, and have square terminals.

The Battle of Boroughbridge was fought on 16 March 1322 in England between a group of rebellious barons and the forces of King Edward II, near Boroughbridge, north-west of York. The culmination of a long period of antagonism between the King and Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, his most powerful subject, it resulted in Lancaster's defeat and execution, ending the Despenser War. This allowed Edward to re-establish royal authority and hold on to power for almost five more years. Though not a part of the Wars of Scottish Independence, the battle is significant for its employment of tactics learned in the Scottish wars in a domestic, English conflict. Both the extensive use of foot soldiers rather than cavalry and the heavy impact caused by the longbow represented significant steps in military developments.

The Tap on the Tutt is a historic pub in Boroughbridge, a town in North Yorkshire, in England. The pub was commissioned by Hepworth & Co, a brewer based in Ripon, for a site on the Great North Road. It was designed by Sydney Blenkhorn and opened in 1930. A rear extension was added in about 1950, but the building remained largely unchanged under long-term owners. In 2001, it was Grade II listed on the initiative of the Campaign for Real Ale. It also appears on the organisation's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors, with the maximum three stars. The pub was sold in 2003 and it was considered for conversion into a restaurant, but ultimately remained a pub. It was known for many years as the Three Horseshoes, but became the "Tap on the Tutt" in 2023. The two-storey building is in painted render with applied timber framing, and has a tile roof. The ground floor has four public rooms, arranged in a line: a dining room, public bar, lounge, and a second dining room. A further bay, recessed on the right, contains toilets. There is a servery behind, and a kitchen and service rooms at the rear. On the front are two doorways with triangular canopies, and four canted bay windows. The upper floor contains two-light casement windows, and in the roof are six flat-roofed dormers. Inside the pub, most of the original fittings survive, other than fitted seating and the enlargement of openings between some of the rooms. They include the oak bar counter in the lounge, with a glazed screen above, bar back and fireplace surround, all in oak.
