Magdeburg (German: [ˈmakdəbʊʁk] (listen); Low Saxon: [ˈmaˑɪdebɔɐ̯x]) is the capital of the German state Saxony-Anhalt. The city is situated at the Elbe river.Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor and founder of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg, was buried in the city's cathedral after his death. Magdeburg's version of German town law, known as Magdeburg rights, spread throughout Central and Eastern Europe. In the Late Middle Ages, Magdeburg was one of the largest and most prosperous German cities and a notable member of the Hanseatic League. One of the most notable people from the city is Otto von Guericke, famous for his experiments with the Magdeburg hemispheres. Magdeburg has been destroyed thrice in its history. In 1207 the first catastrophe struck the city, with a fire burning down almost the entire city, including the Ottonian cathedral. The Catholic League sacked Magdeburg in 1631, resulting in the death of 25,000 non-combatants, the largest loss of the Thirty Years' War. During World War II the Allies bombed the city in 1945 and destroyed much of it. After World War II, the city belonged to the German Democratic Republic from 1949 to 1990. Since then, many new construction projects were implemented and old buildings have been restored. In 2005 Magdeburg celebrated its 1.200th anniversary. Magdeburg is situated on Autobahn 2 and Autobahn 14, and hence is at the connection point of the East (Berlin and beyond) with the West of Europe, as well as the North and South of Germany. For the modern city, the most significant industries are: the Machine industry, Healthcare industry, Mechanical engineering, Environmental technology, Circular economy, Logistics, Culture industry, Wood industry and the Information and communications technology.There are numerous important cultural institutions in the city, including the Theater Magdeburg and the Museum of Cultural History. Furthermore the city is the location of two universities, the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences.

The Magdeburg tramway network (German: Straßenbahnnetz Magdeburg) is a network of tramways forming part of the public transport system in Magdeburg, the capital city of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Opened in 1877, the network has been operated since 1999 by Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe (MVB), and is integrated in the Magdeburger Regionalverkehrsverbund (marego).

It is the proto-cathedral of the former Prince-Archbishopric of Magdeburg. Today it is the principal church of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany. The south steeple is 99.25 m (325 ft 7 in) tall, the north tower 100.98 m (331 ft 4 in), making it one of the tallest cathedrals in eastern Germany. The cathedral is likewise the landmark of Magdeburg, the capital city of the Bundesland of Saxony-Anhalt, and is also home to the grave of Emperor Otto I the Great and his first wife Edith. The first church built in 937 at the location of the current cathedral was an abbey called St. Maurice, dedicated to Saint Maurice. The current cathedral was constructed over the period of 300 years starting from 1209, and the completion of the steeples took place only in 1520. Despite being repeatedly looted, Magdeburg Cathedral is rich in art, ranging from antiques to modern art.

The Diocese of Magdeburg is a diocese of the Latin Church of the Catholic Church, located in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Its seat is Magdeburg; it is suffragan to the Archdiocese of Paderborn. The Diocese was erected out of Paderborn territories in 1994. Its history dates back to the medieval Archbishopric of Magdeburg established in 968 AD.

The Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg (German pronunciation: [ˈɔtoː fɔn ˈɡeːʁɪkə]) (OvGU) was founded in 1993, making it one of the youngest universities in Germany. The university is located in Magdeburg, the Capital city of Saxony-Anhalt and has about 13.000 students in nine faculties. According to the Scopus database there are around 32.900 papers published in international journals from the University.It was named after the physicist and former mayor of Magdeburg Otto von Guericke, famous for his experiments with the Magdeburg hemispheres. The University had three forerunner institutions. These were the Technical University, the Pedagogical college and the Medical Academy, the first of which was established around 1953. They were amalgamated to the Otto-von-Guericke University in 1993.

The Kulturhistorische Museum Magdeburg (KHM) is a museum in Magdeburg for Cultural History. It was originally founded in 1906 as an art-historically oriented Kaiser-Friedrich Museum. The museum focuses on the history of the city in permanent and special exhibitions. Art-historical pieces are also presented. The Museum für Naturkunde Magdeburg is also located in the same building.

The Hasselbachplatz is a square in Magdeburg, which is located south of the city centre and is next to the Damaschkeplatz an important local traffic intersection. It is named after the longtime Magdeburg mayor Carl Gustav Friedrich Hasselbach. In recent years, the area around the square has become the center of Magdeburg's nightlife.
