Franeker (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈfraːnəkər] ; West Frisian: Frjentsjer) is one of the eleven historical cities of Friesland and capital of the municipality of Waadhoeke. It is located north of the Van Harinxmakanaal and about 20 km west of Leeuwarden. As of 1 January 2014, it had 12,781 inhabitants. The Eise Eisinga Planetarium, established in 1781, is located in the city.

Franeker City Hall (Dutch: Stadhuis van Franeker) is the city hall of the municipality of Franeker, Netherlands, one of the eleven historical cities of Friesland. The building dates from 1591–1594 and was built in Frysian renaissance style. The first stone was laid on June 24, 1591. The building took a total of three years. Above the main entrance the coat of arms of Friesland is shown, and along the leadlights on the first floor, another 27 coats of arms are placed. It is a national monument and part of the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites. It is a rijksmonument since February 21, 1967, and is one of only three Frisian entries in the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites. The Dutch House in Brookline, Massachusetts, in the United States of America, was built as a partial copy of the Franeker City Hall, and is itself on the US National Register of Historic Places.

The University of Franeker (1585–1811) was a university in Franeker, Friesland, the Netherlands. It was the second-oldest university of the Netherlands, founded shortly after Leiden University.

Sjaerdemaslot was a Frisian castle, a so-called "state", in Franeker, the Netherlands. In 1446 the construction of the castle was started and the state was demolished in 1727. Famous residents include the philosopher René Descartes and Duke Albert of Saxony.

Franeker is a railway station located in Franeker, Netherlands. The station was opened on 27 October 1863 and is located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between Harlingen and Leeuwarden. The train services are operated by Arriva.

Franekeradeel (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈfraːnəkəraːˌdeːl] ; West Frisian: Frentsjerteradiel) is a former municipality in the northern Netherlands. It was created in 1984 by combining an earlier Franekeradeel municipality with the city of Franeker and parts of the former municipality of Barradeel. On 1 January 2018 it merged with the municipalities of het Bildt, Menameradiel and parts of Littenseradiel to form the new municipality Waadhoeke.

Waadhoeke is a municipality of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It was established 1 January 2018 and consists of the former municipalities of Franekeradeel, het Bildt, Menameradiel and parts of Littenseradiel, all four of which were dissolved on the same day.The municipality is located in the province of Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. Waadhoeke is bordered by Harlingen, Terschelling, Ferwerderadiel, Leeuwarden and Súdwest-Fryslân. The population in January 2019 was 46,133. It is Friesland's sixth-most-populous municipality. The largest population centre (2018 population, 12,793) is Franeker. The residents speak Dutch, West Frisian or Bildts (a dialect in the former municipality het Bildt).

Arkens (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɑr.kəns]; West Frisian: Erkens) is a hamlet in the Dutch municipality of Waadhoeke in the province of Friesland. It is located southwest of Schalsum and on the direct northeast side of Franeker, of which it is a part administratively. The habitation consists of several farms on a road of the same name. Due to the expansions of Franeker, Arkens is located on the edge of the built-up area of Franeker, it is sometimes seen as part of that city itself. Near the hamlet is Arkens, an eponymous windmill which is currently located within the built-up area of Franeker – it was moved to there in 1972.Arkens was mentioned as Erdenze in 1433. Possibly a spelling error as it is mentioned as Erckens in 1499. Such a shift in a short time is not really common. The place name is also said have derived from a compound of Arke, a personal name, and the suffix -ingi which developed into the Frisian -ens. In 1543 the place was mentioned as Arckens. Until 2018, Arkens belonged to the municipality of Franekeradeel.

Dongjum (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈdɔŋ.jʏm], West Frisian: Doanjum) is a village in Waadhoeke in the province Friesland of the Netherlands and has around the 326 citizens as of January 2014.

Holprijp (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦɔlp.rɛi̯p]; West Frisian: Holpryp) is a hamlet in the Dutch municipality of Waadhoeke in the province of Friesland. It is located south of Franeker and northwest of Tzum, of which it is a part administratively. The settlement of the hamlet is located on the country road of the same name that runs from the Lollumerweg to Tzum. At Tzum it connects to the hamlet of Laakwerd.

Doijum (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈdoːi.ʏm]; West Frisian: Doaium) is a hamlet in the Dutch municipality of Waadhoeke in the province of Friesland. It is located east of Hitzum, southeast of Kie and south of Franeker. The Doijumervaart flows through the hamlet. The residential area of the hamlet is located on the Franekerweg and Hitzumerweg, between the Binnenpad van Hitzum and the Lollummerweg where it eventually turns into the hamlet of Miedum. It is spread over three settlements in terms of addressing; Hitzum, Franeker and Tzum. In 1402 the hamlet was mentioned as Dodoghema buren and in 1406 as Do(e)deghum. In 1447 it is mentioned as Doijem. The name derived from a compound of Old Frisian Dodo (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm ('home, settlement').Before the municipal reorganization of 1984, the hamlet was divided between two municipalities, the municipality of Franeker and the municipality of Franekeradeel. After that, until 2018, it fell entirely within the merged municipality of Franekeradeel of the same name.

Schalsum (West Frisian: Skalsum) is a village in Waadhoeke in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 134 in January 2014.
