The University of Groningen (abbreviated as UG; Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, abbreviated as RUG) is a public research university of more than 30,000 students in the city of Groningen in the Netherlands. Founded in 1614, the university is one of the most traditional and prestigious in the Netherlands. The institution has been consistently placed among the top 100 universities worldwide, according to leading ranking tables. In the 2020 ARTU, the University of Groningen is third in the Netherlands, 25th in Europe, and 77th in the world.The University of Groningen has eleven faculties, nine graduate schools, 27 research centres and institutes, and more than 175-degree programmes. The university's alumni and faculty include Johann Bernoulli, Aletta Jacobs, four Nobel Prize winners, nine Spinoza Prize winners, one Stevin Prize winner, various members of the Royal Dutch Family, multiple politicians, the first president of the European Central Bank, and a secretary general of NATO.

The Broerkerk in Groningen, The Netherlands was a Medieval church connected to the Franciscan cloister in Groningen. The church was situated in the Broerstraat in Groningen. The Broerkerk was the first church in the town used by the Protestants. In 1702 Arp Schnitger built an organ for the Broerekerk in Groningen. For the organ he used pipe-work from the previous instrument built by Hendrick Hermans van Loon in 1679. In 1815 the organ was moved by J.W. Timpe to the Der Aa-kerk because the Broerkerk/Academiekerk had to be restored to the Roman Catholic Church.After the city joined the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands, the church became the church of the University of Groningen (1614). In the 19th century the church was given back to the Roman Catholics. The church was in such a bad condition that the decision was taken to demolish it. The remains of the buried bodies found in and around the church were reburied at the Roman Catholic churchyard in town. In 1895 a new church was built on the same site as the former Broerkerk. The new church was named Sint Martinuskerk.

Muller is a restaurant in Groningen, in the Netherlands. It is a fine dining restaurant that is awarded one Michelin star in 1997 and retained that rating until 2012. GaultMillau did not award any points, due to the recent change of course but kept the restaurant in the Guide.Muller was founded in 1991 by Frank Verbeek and Jacques Muller. They hired Jean-Michel Hengge, formerly of Les Quatre Saisons, to do the cooking. In 1992 he bought the restaurant.In 2011, owner and head chef Jean-Michel Hengge changed course in his restaurant. From a restaurant with kitchen staff, he turned it into a one-man show. Regaining the star in 2012 was a victory for Hengge. According to Hengge it felt like getting a complete new Michelin star.Muller is a member of Les Patrons Cuisiniers.

Noorderplantsoen is an urban public park in the city of Groningen in the Netherlands, situated slightly north of the city center. Its name is Dutch for northern public garden.

The Korenbeurs (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈkoːrənˌbøːrs]; English: Grain Exchange) is a neoclassical building in Groningen in the Netherlands. It was originally used as an exchange for food grain trade. Its current tenant is Albert Heijn.The building is a rijksmonument (national heritage site) since 1971 and is one of the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites that was selected in 1990.

The Goudkantoor (English: Gold Office) is a building built in 1635 and located on Waagstraat near the Grote Markt (Main Square) in Groningen, Netherlands. Originally it was built as an office for the receiver of the province of Groningen when it was called Collectehuis. The text on the building, Date Caesari quae sunt Caesaris (Latin) (English: Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's) refers to the original function. The coat of arms of the city of Groningen is located on the building. The name Goudkantoor goes back to 1814-1887, when the Waarborgbureau voor Goud- en Zilverwerken was located in the building. Gold and silver could get a hallmark so people could prove it was real. Prior to World War II the Northern Ship Transport was located in the building. Just before the liberation of the city, in April 1945, the entire collection was transferred to a building on the north side of the Grote Markt, because the owners were afraid that the Goudkantoor would get damaged during the liberation, but in fact it was one of the few buildings that wasn't heavily damaged, because fire-fighters saved it from burning down.After the war, the museum was located in the building again for a short time and later it was used as an information centre (Het Stadjershuis) and as a tourist information centre. The Goudkantoor was restored during the construction of the Nieuwe Waagstraat and is currently a restaurant.

The Gotisch huis (English:Gothic house) is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Groningen, Netherlands. It is a rijksmonument since 1971. Built in the 14th century it is widely seen as the oldest residential building remaining in the city, this fact was mentioned when it became a rijksmonument, even though the Calmershuis that was built in 1250, and mentioned as being a mayor's house, is older. Together with the nextdoor building, the Canterhuis, it is currently in use by the Northern Maritime Museum.

The west gallery organ in the Aa-kerk in Groningen was built by Arp Schnitger in 1699–1702. Originally built for the Academiekerk in Groningen it was moved to the Aa-kerk in 1815. Today it has 40 stops on three manuals and pedal, and is a monument of European significance.

It was a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 1985 and retained that rating until 1991.In 1977, the restaurant was owned by mr. Fr. Graaiman. Geerhard Slenema bought the restaurant, at that time a bistro, in 1978 and turned it slowly into a fine dining-restaurant.Le Mérinos d'Or joined the Alliance Gastronomique Néerlandaise in 1986.Owner and head chef Geerhard Slenema sold the restaurant in 1990, to open Herberg Onder de Linden in Aduard in 1991.

Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈnoːrdələk ˈsxeːpfaːrtmyˌzeːjɵm]; Northern Maritime Museum) is a maritime museum in Groningen in the Netherlands.The museum was opened on 31 March 1932. With 34,098 visitors in 2015, it is one of the most-visited museums in the province of Groningen. The museum had 38,757 visitors in 2017.Jan Wiebe van Veen is the director of the museum and Wicher Kerkmeijer the curator.

Groningen City Hall is the seat of government in Groningen, the Netherlands. The city council meets in a modern room downstairs, but upstairs in the former raadszaal the Gulden Boek is kept that lists the honored citizens of the town.

The Battle of Groningen took place during the penultimate month of Second World War in Europe, from April 13 to 16, 1945, in the city of Groningen between a mixture of German soldiers, Dutch and Belgian SS troops numbering 7,000 against the entire 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, though the whole division was never in combat at any given time. There were also substantial amounts of Luftwaffe units manning flak guns in the area. Groningen was also the site of the headquarters for the Sicherheitsdienst in the North of the Netherlands. The German command structure was poor and the defenders had never exercised together. The Canadian division, consisting of nine infantry battalions, a machine gun battalion, and a reconnaissance battalion, three combat engineer companies (Royal Canadian Engineers), was battle experienced with a proportion of partially trained reinforcements. Armour from the 10th Armoured Regiment (The Fort Garry Horse) and the 9th Armoured Regiment (The British Columbia Dragoons) was used in support.
