Scottish Church (Dresden)

Dresden Hauptbahnhof ("main station", abbreviated Dresden Hbf) is the largest passenger station in the Saxon capital of Dresden. In 1898, it replaced the Böhmischen Bahnhof ("Bohemian station") of the former Saxon-Bohemian State Railway (Sächsisch-Böhmische Staatseisenbahn), and was designed with its formal layout as the central station of the city. The combination of a station building on an island between the tracks and a terminal station on two different levels is unique. The building is notable for its train-sheds, which are roofed with Teflon-coated glass fibre membranes. This translucent roof design, installed during the comprehensive restoration of the station at the beginning of the 21st century, allows more daylight to reach the concourses than was previously possible. The station is connected by the Dresden railway node to the tracks of the Děčín–Dresden-Neustadt railway and the Dresden–Werdau railway (Saxon-Franconian trunk line), allowing traffic to run to the southeast towards Prague, Vienna and on to south-eastern Europe or to the southwest towards Chemnitz and Nuremberg. The connection of the routes to the north (Berlin), northwest (Leipzig) and east (Görlitz) does not take place at the station, but north of Dresden-Neustadt station (at least for passenger trains).

The Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Dresden – University of Applied Sciences (HTW Dresden for short) is a university of applied sciences and, after the Technical University Dresden, the second largest university of the city of Dresden, (Saxony). It offers 36 study programmes in engineering, design, economics and the environment.

The St. Simeon of the Wonderful Mountain Church (Russisch-Orthodoxe Kirche des Heiligen Simeon vom wunderbaren Berge) is a Russian Orthodox church in the German city of Dresden. It was designed by Harald Julius von Bosse and Karl Weißbach and built from 1872 to 1874. It is dedicated to Simeon Stylites the Younger. During the aerial bombing attack on the city in February 1945, the church was the only building within a wide area which remained relatively intact.

The American Church of St. John was a church building constructed in Dresden for the expatriate American community in 1883 to 1884. It was damaged by bombing in 1945 and demolished in 1959.

The Lukaskirche is a church in southern Dresden, Germany.Consecrated in 1903, the Lutheran church was designed by Georg Weidenbach. It was heavily damaged in the bombing of Dresden, during which the spire was destroyed. After the war it was used as a recording studio.

Anne's Church (German: Annenkirche) is named in honour of Anne of Denmark, Electress of Saxony. The original 1578 church was destroyed by Prussian troops in 1760 during the Seven Years' War. The new church was opened in 1769.

All Saints Church (Allerheiligenkirche) was an Anglican church on Wiener Straße in Dresden. It was in the Early English Period of Neo-Gothic architecture.

The Lohrmann Observatory is an astronomical observatory at the Dresden University of Technology in Germany. The observatory was built in 1913 and named after the German astronomer Wilhelm Gotthelf Lohrmann.

The Residenz department store, popular under the acronym ReKa, was a department store in the style of reform architecture in Dresden-Altstadt Waisenhausstraße 16, on the corner of Prager Straße. Aryanized under the Nazis, the building was burned out in 1945 and demolished in 1950/1953.In 1993/1995, the Karstadt department store was built on the same site.

The siege of Dresden took place in July 1760 during the Third Silesian War (part of the Seven Years' War) when a Prussian force led by Frederick the Great unsuccessfully besieged the city of Dresden in Saxony. Frederick had previously occupied Dresden in 1756 during his Invasion of Saxony, which had triggered the outbreak of war. In 1759 it had been taken back by Austria-led forces. Frederick now targeted it in an attempt to reassert control over Saxony where he had expansionist territorial ambitions. The Prussian army reached the outskirts of Dresden on 13 July followed closely by a corps of Austrian troops under Count von Lacy. Frederick's forces crossed the River Elbe and overran the suburbs of the city bringing up heavy guns to target inside the city walls. Frederick was accused of deliberately shelling civilian areas of the city.Deciding to move and confront the threatening army of Daun, Frederick abandoned his attempt to reoccupy the city and withdrew. The large amount of damage done to the city and indiscriminate destruction further damaged Frederick's reputation across much of Europe. In particular, his destruction of the Elector of Saxony's gardens at Pirna in the wake of the siege, drew criticism.Dresden was the third major siege Frederick had been forced to abandon following Prague (1757) and Olomouc (1758). Frederick's forces crossed into Silesia and fought the Battle of Liegnitz on 15 August.

The Kingdom of Saxony (German: Königreich Sachsen), lasting from 1806 to 1918, was an independent member of a number of historical confederacies in Napoleonic through post-Napoleonic Germany. The kingdom was formed from the Electorate of Saxony. From 1871, it was part of the German Empire. It became a free state in the era of Weimar Republic in 1918 after the end of World War I and the abdication of King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony. Its capital was the city of Dresden, and its modern successor state is the Free State of Saxony.
