St Nicholas' Church, Ganton

Ganton is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the south side of the Vale of Pickering immediately north of the Yorkshire Wolds. Ganton lies 7 miles (11 km) west of the coastal town of Filey, and 9 miles (14 km) south-west of Scarborough. The village appears in the Domesday Book and its name is thought to mean 'Galma's farmstead'.It was historically part of the East Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. Between 1974 and 2023 it was part of the Ryedale district. It is now administered by North Yorkshire Council. Ganton is situated on the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail and Centenary Way, long-distance footpaths. Its most notable landmark is its golf course. The Ganton Golf Club has hosted the Ryder Cup matches in 1949, The Amateur Championship three times, in 1964, 1977 and 1991, and the Walker Cup in 2003. The Grade II listed Ganton Hall is the family seat of the investment banker and businessman Nicholas Wrigley.The village church on Main Street is dedicated to St Nicholas. The 13th-15th century building is Grade II* listed.The small village of Potter Brompton lies at the western end of the parish. Ganton Cricket Club field two teams in the Scarborough Beckett Cricket League. Ganton cricket team plays at the ground overlooking the A64 next to the village hall.

Ganton Hall is a historic building in Ganton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The manor house was purchased by John Legard in 1586, at which time it was described as "new builded, the walls of chalk-stone and covered with slate". The current country house was built slightly further south between 1866 and 1868, and the old house was demolished in 1870. In 1910, the house was sold to the Wrigley family. In the late 20th and early 21st century, it was the home of Phillida Wrigley and her husband, and more recently the owner has been Nicholas Wrigley. The house was grade II listed in 1992. The house is built of red brick on a chamfered plinth, with stone dressings, quoins, a narrow floor band, a moulded eaves band, and slate roofs with shaped gables. The windows throughout are sashes. There are two storeys and attics, and an H-shaped plan, and a lower service wing with one storey and an attic. The southeast front has five bays, a recessed centre flanked by two-storey canted bay window, and gabled dormers. The southwest front has three bays and contains a canted and a square two-storey bay window. The northwest entrance front has five irregular bays, and contains a porch with coupled Doric columns, an entablature, and a plain parapet. Inside, there is fine coving, a grand wooden staircase, and marble fireplaces, while the laundry has its original stove and drying shelves.

The United States team won the competition by a score of seven to five.Still recovering from his near-fatal automobile accident in February, Ben Hogan was the non-playing captain of the U.S. team. He returned as a competitor for a final time in 1951. The U.S. team's decision to bring a half ton of meat to England made headlines.Hogan objected to the depth of the grooves on some British players' irons, and they were modified before being allowed into the competition. Britain led three to one after the first day, but the U.S. won six of eight matches in singles on Saturday to keep the Cup.The Ganton course measured 6,632 yards (6,064 m) for this Ryder Cup.

Ganton railway station was a minor railway station serving the village of Ganton, North Yorkshire, England, on the York to Scarborough Line and was opened on 5 July 1845 by the York and North Midland Railway. In order to speed up traffic on the line, most of the intermediate stations including Ganton were closed to passenger traffic in 1930. Accordingly, it closed to passenger traffic on 22 September 1930, and was finally closed to goods traffic in 1964.

Potter Brompton is a small village in the English county of North Yorkshire, on the A64 road from Malton to Scarborough. Potter Brompton is mentioned in the Domesday Book as having 29 ploughlands, but no villagers. The land originally belonged to Earl Morcar, but after the Conquest, the land was forfeited to William the Conqueror.The village is well served by public transport; it has an hourly bus service through the day on the Yorkshire Coastliner route between Leeds, York, Malton and Scarborough.

The River Hertford is a river in Yorkshire in the north of England. It is part of the River Derwent catchment area. The River Hertford starts close to Muston near the seaside town of Filey. Despite being only 1.2 miles (2 km) from the North Sea (to its eastern side) the river flows westwards for 9.9 miles (16 km) into the River Derwent at Haybridge, North Yorkshire, near Wykeham. It has been referred to as a 'backward-flowing river' because it flows away from the sea. Ekwall suggests the name derives from a ford over the river, which became the name by back formation.Star Carr, a Mesolithic archaeological site, lies close to the river. Star Carr was on the edge of a nine-thousand year old Stone Age wetland known as, 'Lake Flixton' (near Flixton). This area is now known as the River Hertford Floodplain and extends from Muston in the east to Ganton in the west.Originally the river meandered, but the Muston & Yedingham Drainage Act 1800 resulted in the River Derwent and the River Hertford being straightened by cutting a new course for each. The Hertford was hand dug during the industrial revolution (local stories hold that the men who dug the new channel were prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars).The River Hertford catchment suffers from the discharges of three sewage plants at Folkton, Hunmanby and Seamer. This not only affects the quality of the river but also that of the Derwent downstream of Haybridge.

St Peter's Church is the parish church of Willerby, North Yorkshire, a village in England. The church was built in the 13th century, from which period the nave survives. The tower and porch were added in the 14th century. In the 18th century, the north aisle was narrowed, then in the between 1881 and 1882 the church was restored, the work including the rebuilding of the chancel. The church was grade II* listed in 1966. The church is built of sandstone with a slate roof, and consists of a nave continuous with the chancel, a south porch, a north aisle and a west tower. The tower has buttresses, a three-light west window, a stair turret on the north, and louvred bell openings, above which is a string course and an embattled parapet. The porch is gabled, and contains an arched opening, a hood mould and a keystone carved with a head, and a sundial. Inside, there are 19th-century oil lamps, and stained glass in the east window dating from around 1879.

The Binnington Carr Hoard is a Roman coin hoard dating from the late 1st century AD. It contains 12 silver denarii within a copper alloy bell. It is in the collection of the Yorkshire Museum.

Staxton is a village in North Yorkshire, England, part of the civil parish of Willerby, and situated approximately 8.2 miles from Scarborough town centre. Until 1974 the village lay in the historic county boundaries of the East Riding of Yorkshire and from 1974 to 2023 was a part of the Ryedale district.
