Penistone Town Hall

The Penistone Paramount Cinema is a community cinema and theatre in Penistone, near Barnsley, in the heart of the South Yorkshire Pennines. Besides the big film releases, there are live shows and monthly organ concerts. The cinema is also home to one of the few working theatre organs in the country. The Paramount Compton Organ has been recently rebuilt, and was the reason why the cinema was renamed from the Metro Cinema. The Compton Organ was built in 1937 by the John Compton Organ Company in London, especially for the Paramount Theatre in Birmingham. The organ was removed from there in 1988 when the cinema was refurbished and made into a multiplex. It was then moved to the Regal in Oswestry, where it stayed until the cinema closed in 1994. In 2000 The Penistone Cinema Organ Trust purchased the organ, and all of the 1000 pipes were cleaned out as part of the organ restoration. The trust then made an agreement with the council for the organ to be based there. The cinema was then renamed as the Paramount in honour of the new resident. The building itself remains the property of Barnsley Metropolitan District Council, and is leased back to Penistone Town Council to keep it open as a cinema. The cinema was featured on the BBC Politics Show as an example of how a small provincial community cinema can survive. In 2016 it was used as the cinema setting for episode 2 of Brief Encounters (TV series).

Thurlstone is a village near Penistone in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. Originally it was a small farming community. Some industries developed using water power from the River Don such as corn milling, wire drawing and various wool and cloth processes. Most of these are now gone and only James Durrans (carbon products) and Service Direct owned by 'Don Eddie' remain. The village is now a dormitory for the urban areas of South and West Yorkshire. The village now falls in the Penistone West ward of the Barnsley MBC. Its name is believed to be of Anglo-Saxon origin, possibly referring to the god Thunor. Other sources argue that its name is taken from thirled (pierced) rock which is found at its location. The nearby village Thurgoland may have a similar derivation. The parish church is the Church of St Saviour. It is situated about 8 miles (13 km) from Barnsley, 14 miles (23 km) from Huddersfield, 16 miles (26 km) from both Sheffield, and Glossop, 27 miles (43 km) from Leeds, and 28 miles (45 km) from Manchester.

Penistone ( PEN-iss-tən) is a market town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England, which had a population of 22,909 at the 2011 census. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is 8 miles (13 km) west of Barnsley, 17 miles (27 km) north-east of Glossop, 14.2 miles (23 km) north-west of Sheffield, 27 miles (43 km) south-west of Leeds and 29 miles (47 km) east of Manchester in the foothills of the Pennines. The town is frequently noted on lists of unusual place names. The highest point, Hartcliffe Tower, is 1,194 ft (364 m) above sea level and has views over the Woodhead bypass and the Dark Peak. The surrounding countryside is predominantly rural with farming on rich well-watered soil on mainly gentle slopes rising to the bleak moorland to the west of the town. Dry stone walls, small hamlets and farms surrounded by fields and livestock are synonymous with the area. The area is known for its rugged breed of sheep, the Whitefaced Woodland. The market town itself stands at its highest point around St Johns Church at around 820 ft (250 m) above sea level. However, the surrounding land rises well over 1,000 ft (300 m) towards Cubley and Thurlstone Moors and out towards smaller hamlets at Carlecotes, Victoria, Dunford and Crow Edge, elevated at points above 1,200 ft (370 m). There are several vantage points around Penistone that afford panoramic views of the surrounding areas of West Yorkshire and North Derbyshire.

Saint John the Baptist Church, Penistone Parish Church, or Penistone Church is a Church of England church in the Parish of Penistone, near Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, England. The church is a Grade I listed building and is located in the centre of the town of Penistone.

Penistone Rural District was a rural district in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It was named after but did not contain Penistone. The town itself was contained within the Penistone Urban District. The district was abolished in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972 and went on to be part of the newly formed Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in the, also newly formed, metropolitan county of South Yorkshire.

Penistone Church Football Club is an English football club based in Penistone, Barnsley, South Yorkshire. They play in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, at level 9 of the English football league system.

Penistone railway station is a railway station which serves the town of Penistone, in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Train services are provided by Northern Trains. The current station (at the junction of the Woodhead Line and Penistone Line) opened in 1874, replacing a station solely on the Woodhead Line dating from the line's opening by the Sheffield, Ashton-Under-Lyne and Manchester Railway in 1845. The railway station currently only serves the Penistone Line. The line connects Huddersfield with Sheffield, via Barnsley, with an hourly train in each direction. There is a voluntary organisation which supports and promotes community involvement along the line called the Penistone Line Partnership.Penistone station is the site of the one of the two remaining passing loops on the Barnsley to Huddersfield line, allowing trains coming from Sheffield and Huddersfield to pass each other. However, the sections either side of it are each single track – that northwards to Clayton West junction and Shepley having been singled in 1969, whilst that to Barnsley has been so since reopening in 1983. The loop was formerly controlled from the distinctive elevated ex-GCR Huddersfield Junction signal box south of the station until 1998, when control was transferred to the new Barnsley PSB and the box closed (it has since been demolished). Immediately north of the station, the line crosses the Don valley on an imposing 98 ft (30 m) high stone viaduct of 29 arches (one of four such structures on the route).

Penistone Viaduct is a grade II listed railway viaduct that carries the Penistone Line over the River Don in Penistone, South Yorkshire, England. It is immediately north of Penistone station and was completed in 1850 to a design by John Hawkshaw. The viaduct was partially rebuilt in 1916 after one of the arches over the River Don collapsed.

Penistone Grammar School (PGS) is a co-educational secondary school, and former grammar school in Penistone, South Yorkshire, England. Founded in 1392, it is the 45th oldest extant school in England with its most notable alumnus being Nicholas Saunderson, the probable inventor of Bayes theorem, in the 18th century. The school has undergone many expansions, requiring the erection of several buildings, and now houses over 1,600 pupils from age 11 to 18. Its current Ofsted overall rating is grade 2 ('good') following an inspection in November 2017.

Cubley is a village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. It is about a mile to the south of Penistone town centre and essentially is now a part of Penistone. The village falls within the Penistone West ward of Barnsley MBC. Originally Cubley consisted of the few houses now on the south edge of the village and the associated nearby farms and Cubley Hall (initially a farm and country residence, then a children's home and now a pub, restaurant and hotel). Now due to extensive building in the 20th and early 21st Centuries these old cottages are now connected right up to Penistone town itself. Cubley currently has no shops or other services (other than Cubley Hall) serving the village and people have to walk (or catch the bus) for the mile or so trip into Penistone town centre for their basic shopping. Cubley has no schools, with most children going to St John the Baptist Infant and Junior Schools in Penistone and then on to Penistone Grammar School.

Gunthwaite is a hamlet in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. It is in the civil parish of Gunthwaite and Ingbirchworth and on the boundary of Kirklees in West Yorkshire. At the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 400, increasing to 460 at the 2011 Census.The settlement can be traced back over 1,000 years. Within the parish is located Gunthwaite Hall, former seat of the Bosville family. Its 16th century Grade I listed close-studded cruck barn is still in agricultural use and has been described as "one of the glories of the parish." Also to be found nearby is Gunthwaite Spa, a sulphur-rich spring whose waters emerge from a pipe set in a stone recess by the side of Carr Lane. Here, the old practice of celebrating Spaw Sunday still survives to this day.

Penistone and Stocksbridge is a constituency in South Yorkshire represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Miriam Cates, a Conservative. As with all Westminster constituencies, adults qualifying to vote in the seat elect one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system at least every five years.
