Welburn is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, on the north bank of the River Derwent. It lies on the edge of the Howardian Hills, near to the stately home Castle Howard. It is about 14 miles from York and 5 miles south-west of Malton/Norton. It is a popular area for walkers and bird-watchers. The parish's population was estimated at 523 people in 2013. This figure includes the developments at Crambeck, Holmes Crescent and Chestnut Avenue that are some distance outside the heart of the village. It is a traditional village in regards to its linear structure. The Main Street has two main offshoots; one lane, to the south, is called Church Lane (formerly Bank Lane) and leads to St John the Evangelist Church, built in 1858, to the newly built Village Hall, and to a small area of housing, mostly constructed in the 1960s. The lane leading northwards is called Water Lane, a short section of road serving two properties and over a small stream to farmland. Main Street continues south-eastwards of the village centre as Chestnut Avenue to join the main A64 road to Malton and York. Welburn was part of the Ryedale district from 1974 to 2023. It is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. It has one school, Welburn Community School, in the centre of the village. It also has a pub, the Crown and Cushion, which provides a centre for the village and Four and Twenty Blackbirds, village bakery and café. Welburn is one of the few villages in the area that still has a red telephone box (located near the centre of the village); they are becoming an increasing rarity in North Yorkshire. The parish council of the area is based at Welburn Village Hall. It has elected members from Welburn and Crambeck, an adjoining settlement. Crambeck, formerly a reformatory school, was used in the Roman period times as the site of a pottery. The Roman ceramic produced here is known as Crambeck Ware. The recently redeveloped Village Hall, operational since May 2007, is used for a range of activities and groups in the village and the surrounding area. These groups include the Women's Institute, horticultural society, indoor bowling club, country dancing, Local History Group, Wine Club and an Art & Craft club. The eco-friendly Village Hall is a gathering place for villagers and local walkers.

The Carrmire Gate is a folly forming part of the estate landscape of Castle Howard, a country house in North Yorkshire, in England. The gate with its towers and flanking walls was constructed in 1725, to a design by Nicholas Hawksmoor. It is the first in a succession of structures encountered by a visitor travelling to the house, but was the last built. It is smaller and more decorative than the next, the Pyramid Gate. At the edge of the estate, it would have originally marked the transition from open fields to the estate's deer park; although in a dip, the openness of the landscape would have made it a prominent landmark. John Dixon Hunt describes the gate as "very theatrical – pure stage set and, since its extent is so short, clearly incapable of doing any defending at all". Vaughan Hart describes it as "an exercise in effecting ... feelings of awe and wonder in the visitor". The structure is in the Italianate style, reminiscent of the work of Giulio Romano. It is built of limestone. The gateway has a round arch with a triple keystone and an open pediment, flanked by square rusticated piers, surmounted by six pyramids. On each side is an embattled wall extending for about 30 metres (98 ft), and ending in mock medieval turrets, with two stages, cruciform arrow slits and embattled parapets. It has been Grade I listed since 1954.

Whitwell-on-the-Hill is a village and civil parish in the Ryedale district, in the county of North Yorkshire, England. The civil parish population (including Crambe and Foston) at the 2011 Census was 311. It is near the A64 road.The local parish church is dedicated to St John. Langdale's 1822 Topographical Dictionary reports "a well of remarkably clear water, from which the town derives its name". The 1828 The New Yorkshire Gazetteer or Topographical Dictionary by Stephen Reynolds Clarke states that Whitwell is "6 miles S.W. from Malton [has] a singular well, the water of which is nearly the colour of milk, and from which the township derives its name."

St Martin's Church is the parish church of Bulmer, North Yorkshire, a village in England. The oldest part of the church is the nave, which dates from the 11th century, and may be before or after the Norman Conquest. The chancel dates from the early 12th century, while the south nave door was added in the second half of the century. Around 1400, a north chapel was added, the tower and quire were rebuilt, and the nave walls were heightened. The upper part of the tower was rebuilt in 1637, and buttresses were added. In the 18th century, the chapel was demolished, and new windows were inserted in the walls of the nave. A porch was added around 1800. In 1893, James Demaine and Walter Brierley restored the church, during which process they rebuilt the chancel. The church was Grade I listed in 1954. The church is built of limestone and sandstone, with a roof of Westmorland slate to the nave and corrugated iron to the chancel. The church consists of a nave, a south porch, a two-bay chancel, and a west tower. The tower has three stages, a string course, diagonal buttresses, a small lancet window, double lancet bell openings, and an embattled parapet with corner pinnacles and a datestone. The porch has a late 12th-century doorway with two orders on moulded capitals. Two round-headed 11th-century windows survive on the south side of the nave, while the 15th- and 18th-century windows have square heads. In the porch is a memorial to Christopher Thompson, blacksmith at Castle Howard, who died in 1773. Inside the church is the head of a Saxon wheel-cross. There is an effigy of John de Bulmer, who died in the 1270s, and a slab commemorating Ralph Bulmer, who died in 1461. The 18th-century pulpit is octagonal, while there is a 13th-century font, with a circular bowl, and an octagonal stem and base. The rood screen is 15th century.

Bulmer is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 174, increasing to 202 at the census 2011. The village is about 7 miles (11 km) south-west of Malton.

The Atlas Fountain stands in the grounds of Castle Howard, North Yorkshire, England. It has been designated a Grade I listed building and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England.

Barton Hill is a village in North Yorkshire, off the A64 road, near Barton-le-Willows. Barton Hill was served by Barton Hill railway station on the York to Scarborough Line between 1845 and 1930.

Castle Howard is a stately home in North Yorkshire, England, within the civil parish of Henderskelfe, located 15 miles (24 km) north of York. It is a private residence and has been the home of the Carlisle branch of the Howard family for more than 300 years. Castle Howard is not a fortified structure, but the term "castle" is sometimes used in the name of an English country house that was built on the site of a former castle. The house is familiar to television and film audiences as the fictional "Brideshead", both in Granada Television's 1981 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited and in a two-hour 2008 adaptation for cinema.

Henderskelfe Castle, or Henderskelf Castle in older texts, was a Medieval castle in the English county of North Yorkshire. It stood on what is now the site of Castle Howard, a large stately home.

Barton Hill railway station was a minor railway station serving the villages of Barton Hill and Barton-le-Willows in North Yorkshire, England. Located on the York to Scarborough Line it was opened on 5 July 1845 by the York and North Midland Railway. It closed on 22 September 1930. The station was originally just named Barton, but the 'Hill' suffix was added in July 1853.

Henderskelfe is a civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. The parish does not contain any villages, though it is named after a previous settlement and castle which occupied the land on which Castle Howard is now built. Historically the area was a township in the ecclesiastical parish of Bulmer, however it has been its own civil parish since 1866.

Kirkham Abbey railway station was a minor railway station serving the village of Kirkham in North Yorkshire, England on the York to Scarborough Line and was opened on 5 July 1845 by the York and North Midland Railway. It closed on 22 September 1930. The station was originally just named Kirkham, but the 'Abbey' suffix was added on 1 June 1875, to take into account the proximity of the ruins of Kirkham Priory.
