Market House (Portland, Maine)

The Old City Hall of Portland, Maine, was located in what was then known as Market Square or Haymarket Square (Monument Square today) between 1833 and 1888, when it was demolished. In 1862, it was replaced by an earlier version of the City Hall located today on Congress Street, a short distance northeast of the original location.

The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument (also known as "Our Lady of Victories") is a monumental statue located in Monument Square, Portland, Maine, United States. Dedicated on October 28, 1891, it honors "those brave men of Portland, soldiers of the United States army and sailors of the navy of the United States who died in defense of the country in the late civil war". The monument's base has the inscription Portland: To Her Sons Who Died for The Union. It is a bronze statue mounted on a granite base, depicting a female figure, clad in armor and covered by flowing robes. She is holding a furled flag in one hand and a mace and shield in the other. The figure is an allegorical representation of Victory. On two sides of the base stand bronze groups of three sailors and three soldiers. On the northern side, the central figure is Brigadier Francis L. Vinton of Fort Preble. Maine sailors are honored on the opposite side, with Admiral David G. Farragut being the central figure. The sculpture was created by Maine sculptor Franklin Simmons; the base was designed by New York City architect Richard Morris Hunt. Portland architect Francis H. Fassett selected the site's original landscaping. The local Grand Army of the Republic lodge raised sufficient funds for to pay for the monument. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 1, 1998. The monument stands on the former location of Portland's Market House, which was built in 1825. It was modified in 1833 to become Portland's first city hall.

One Monument Square is a ten-storey office building located in Monument Square, Portland, Maine. It stands at the former location of the United States Hotel, which was one of the oldest hotels in the city, having been in business for 97 years. It was demolished in 1965, and replaced four years by the current structure, with a plaque in front denoting the site as the former location of the hotel.

The United States Hotel was a hotel in Portland, Maine. At the time of its closure, in 1900, it was one of the oldest hotels in the city, having been in business for 97 years. The hotel stood on Federal Street, behind Market House (built in 1825; later modified to become Portland's original city hall), in what was then known as Haymarket Square. Built in 1803 as the Washington Hall Hotel, it was later renamed the Cumberland Hotel. It was renamed again, around 1829, to the Portland House, then the Cumberland House in 1835. At the time of its opening, the hotel had eighteen parlors and 57 bedrooms. It had 150 rooms at its peak, and was listed as one of three principal hotels in Maine in The United States Statistical Directory, Or, Merchants' and Travellers' Guide (1847), the others being the American House (at the corner of Fore Street and Lime Street) and Casco Temperance House (on Middle Street). Elm Tavern (also on Federal Street) and Cape Cottage (on Cape Elizabeth) joined the ranks in 1850. Two United States presidents stayed at the hotel: James K. Polk (then in-office) in 1846 and Millard Fillmore in 1855. Bill Hickock was also a guest. The hotel underwent extensive remodeling in 1875, including the addition of a fifth floor, telegraph services for its guests, a reading room, a billiard room and supplementary bathrooms. In 1880, a livery stable was advertised as being connected to the hotel. In 1891, by which time Haymarket Square had been renamed Monument Square, the ground floor of the hotel was occupied by M. T. Quimby & Co. jewelers. The hotel's proprietors included Foss and O'Connor, R. W. Carter, George F. Wolcott, and Will H. McDonald. The hotel closed in 1900, and the building became Edwards and Walker hardware store, prior to the building's demolition in December 1965. The new construction, completed in 1969, was originally the home of Casco Bank. It is the home of One Monument Square today. A plaque in front of the current building denotes the site as the former location of the hotel.

The library has three neighborhood branches, Burbank branch (in Deering), Peaks Island branch, and Riverton branch.

The Fidelity Trust building (previously, Maine Bank and Trust Building; currently also known as the People's United Bank Building') is an historic office building in Monument Square, Portland, Maine. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style by Boston architect George Henri Desmond, the 135-foot, 10-story building was Maine's first skyscraper. It is also notable for the ornate facade that covers the side and the top of the structure. It opened in 1910 to great fanfare, altering Portland's skyline.As of 2019, the Fidelity Building was Maine's 11th-tallest building and the state's fourth-largest office building. It sits next to the Time and Temperature Building. The building commands easterly views of downtown Portland and Casco Bay. Its westerly views show Back Cove and out to the White Mountains and Mount Washington in New Hampshire. Today, it is often called the People's United Bank Building after its main tenant and large sign at the top. Other tenants include New England Cablevision, Dirigo Financial Group, and Nexrep. It is listed as an historic Portland Landmark.

The Portland Public Library (PPL) was a short-lived but influential institution in Portland, Oregon, United States.Established in 1891 by a group including former members of the Library Association of Portland (LAP), which had run a library since 1864, the PPL succeeded in offering free service to the public without government involvement for several years. The two organizations merged in 1902, and the new organization, which became known as the Multnomah County Library, offered free, tax supported library services for the first time in Portland. The merger allowed the PPL's records to persist, permitting comparison of the two organizations and their respective roles in establishing the legacy of free public libraries in the Portland area. Notably, the PPL had a high degree of involvement by women, who at times held a majority of the seats on the board of trustees, and who performed fund-raising duties. The PPL is said to have had a more "democratic nature" than the better-established LAP.Prior to the merger, the two libraries existed harmoniously, serving different constituencies. The PPL was the "poor man's library" and closely adhered to the ideals of the public library movement, while the LAP served a middle-to-upper income clientele.

The Lancaster Block is an historic commercial building in downtown Portland, Maine. Located at 50 Monument Square, it is a fine local example of commercial Romanesque Revival architecture. It was built in 1881 and enlarged in 1908; it is named for Lancaster, New Hampshire, the hometown of its builder, J. B. Brown. it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

First Parish Church is an historic church at 425 Congress Street in Portland, Maine. Built in 1825 for a congregation established in 1674, it is the oldest church building in the city, and one of its finest examples of Federal period architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The congregation is Unitarian Universalist; its pastor is Reverend Norman Allen.

Congress Street is the main street in Portland, Maine. Around 5.77 miles (9.29 km) long, it stretches from County Road, Portland's southwestern border with Westbrook, through a number of neighborhoods, before ending overlooking the Eastern Promenade on Munjoy Hill. In March 2009, the Portland City Council designated much of the inner portion of Congress Street a historic district. The western section of the street includes the city's Arts District. The street was formerly known as both Country Road and Back Street. West of downtown Portland, the street is known colloquially as Outer Congress Street. Portland City Hall stands at 389 Congress Street, at the head of Exchange Street.

The Byron Greenough Block or Lower H. H. Hay Block is an historic commercial building at Free and Cross Streets in downtown Portland, Maine. Built in 1848 and enlarged in 1919 to a design by John Calvin Stevens, it is one of the city's finer surviving Greek Revival commercial buildings. The block was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in March 1977.
