As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 4,741, an increase of 77 (+1.7%) from the 2010 census count of 4,664, which in turn reflected a decrease of 76 (−1.6%) from the 4,740 counted in the 2000 census.Harrington Park was formed on March 29, 1904, from portions of Harrington Township and Washington Township, and parts of the borough of Closter.The name Harrington Park was based on the larger Harrington Township from which it was in part derived, which in turn was based on the family name Haring, who were early settlers of the region.

During the 1994-96 school years, Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan was awarded the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. As of the 2021–22 school year, the high school had an enrollment of 1,044 students and 104.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.0:1.The district participates in special education programs offered by Region III, one of seven such regional programs in Bergen County. Region III coordinates and develops special education programs for the 1,000 students with learning disabilities in the region, which also includes the Alpine, Closter, Demarest, Haworth, Northvale, Norwood and Old Tappan districts, as well as the Northern Valley Regional High School District.

The David and Cornelius Van Horn House is located at 11 Cedar Lane in the borough of Closter in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States The historic stone house was built around 1778 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 9, 1983, for its significance in architecture. It was listed as part of the Early Stone Houses of Bergen County Multiple Property Submission (MPS). According to the nomination form, the farm was confiscated and sold to Henry Folks (Volk) in 1779. Christian Van Horn purchased it in 1800 for his son David Van Horn. After his death, it passed to his son, Cornelius Van Horn.

It was listed as part of the Early Stone Houses of Bergen County Multiple Property Submission (MPS). Described as a lovely example of early Dutch craftsmanship by the nomination form, the house was likely built by a member of the Blauvelt family before the American Revolutionary War based on architectural evidence. The south side is constructed with bricks. It was owned by William Atwater in 1876. It was restored in 1930 by G. Semendinger.

The actual date of this house is unknown. The first recorded information is a sale of the house from Abraham A. Cole to Henry Volk in 1804. It was owned by David Van Valen after 1876.
