Wimbledon Common

Old Central School was a school on Wimbledon Common, south-west London, founded in 1758. It closed in the early 1960s when its role was taken over by Bishop Gilpin School, a new school on a different site in Wimbledon. The original octagonal school building in Camp Road, built in 1758, was still standing in 2012 and in use as part of a private school, The Study.

The Wimbledon Land Rover school crash occurred shortly before 09:54 BST on 6 July 2023, at The Study Preparatory School, a girls' preparatory school in Wimbledon, south-west London, England. A Land Rover car crashed into an end-of-year tea party at the primary school, killing two children.

A bust of the Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie formerly stood in Cannizaro Park in Wimbledon Common, London. A work of the sculptor Hilda Seligman, it was destroyed in June 2020.

Cannizaro Park is a public park in Wimbledon in the London Borough of Merton. Located towards the south-western edge of Wimbledon Common, it is known for its ornamental landscaped gardens with ponds and sculpture. The park is Grade II* listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

The Kier (sometimes The Keir) is a Grade II listed house on the west side of Wimbledon Common, built in 1789, later extended and now subdivided into nine flats.The house was built in 1789 for the Aguilar family of Portuguese Jews. In 1812, it was acquired by the McEvoy family, who were Roman Catholics. They enlarged the garden by demolishing some cottages, converting one into a Victorian Gothic residence for their personal chaplain and another into a private chapel. In 1850, what was #24 became known as The Kier. Around 1922, it became a girls' finishing school. In 1932, it was bought by the owner of nearby Cannizaro House, who converted it into nine flats and added much of the garden (including the private chapel) to that of Cannizaro House, now Cannizaro Park.Recorded occupants of The Keir include: Abraham Aguilar (1789), Christopher McEvoy (1810), Peter McEvoy (1838), Lady Cunyngham (1886), Thomas and Mrs Rudd (1891–1906), Lord Kensington (1925). and Richardson Evans (1846–1928), a British civil servant, journalist and author.

Wimbledon Windmill is a Grade II* listed windmill situated on Wimbledon Common in the London Borough of Merton (originally in Surrey), in the west of South London, and is preserved as a museum.

Lieutenant-Colonel Harry Norton Schofield, VC (29 January 1865 – 10 October 1931) was an English British Army officer and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Stamford House is a Grade II listed house on the west side of Wimbledon Common, Wimbledon, London, built in about 1720.Stamford House housed a "series of local vicars", and later became a school.From 1926 to 1940, there was a theosophical community living at Stamford House, led by Edward Lewis Gardner (1869-1969), who was a leading member of the Theosophical Society in England, and its general secretary from 1924 to 1928.Soldiers were billeted here during the Second World War, after which it was converted into nine flats.

Putney Vale is a small community in south west London. It lies between Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common, to the east of Beverley Brook and Kingston Vale. Its main features are a housing estate, a superstore and a large cemetery. The A3 dual carriageway runs through it.

Major-General Ernest Wright Alexander, (2 October 1870 – 25 August 1934) was a British Army officer and an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Hanford Row is a Grade II listed row of six terraced houses set back from the west side of Wimbledon Common, Wimbledon, London, that was built in the 1760s. These six labourers' cottages were named after their builder, William Hanford, a London businessman. The steep mansard roofs with dormer windows were a later addition.

Putney Vale Cemetery and Crematorium in southwest London is located in Putney Vale, surrounded by Putney Heath and Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park. It is located within 47 acres (19 ha) of parkland. The cemetery was opened in 1891 and the crematorium in 1938. The cemetery was originally laid out on land which had belonged to Newlands Farm, which was established in the medieval period.The cemetery has two chapels, one being a traditional Church of England chapel and the other being used for multi-denomination or non-religious services. It has a large Garden of Remembrance.There are 87 Commonwealth war grave burials from the First World War and 97 from the Second World War in the cemetery. Six Victoria Cross recipients have been buried or cremated here. The burials are scattered throughout the grounds of the cemetery and a Screen Wall Memorial has been erected to record the names of those whose graves are not marked by headstones. Those who have been cremated at Putney Vale Crematorium also have their names recorded on these panels.
