Nansemond is an extinct jurisdiction that was located south of the James River in Virginia Colony and in the Commonwealth of Virginia (after statehood) in the United States, from 1646 until 1974. It was known as Nansemond County until 1972. From 1972 to 1974, a period of eighteen months, it was the independent city of Nansemond. It is now part of the independent city of Suffolk. English colonists named it for the Nansemond, a tribe of Native Americans who had long been living along the Nansemond River, a tributary of what the English later named as the James River. They encountered the English colonists after they began arriving in 1607 at Jamestown. Although disrupted by being forced off their land and through armed confrontation with colonists, the Nansemond Indian Nation continues to be based in Virginia and was granted state (1985) and federal recognition (2018).

Upper Norfolk County is an extinct county which was located in colonial Virginia from 1637 until 1646. In 1634, the King of England directed the formation of eight shires (or counties) in the colony of Virginia. One of these was Elizabeth City Shire, which included land area on both sides of Hampton Roads. New Norfolk County was formed in 1636 from Elizabeth City Shire. It included all the area in South Hampton Roads now incorporated in the five independent cities located there in modern times. In 1637, New Norfolk County was divided into Upper Norfolk County and Lower Norfolk County. Upper Norfolk County became Nansemond County in 1646. The county became the independent city of Nansemond in 1972, and in 1974, merged with the city of Suffolk. The new consolidated city assumed the name of Suffolk.

It is the 8th-most populous city in Virginia, the largest city in Virginia by boundary land area as well as the 14th-largest in the country. Suffolk is located in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. This also includes the independent cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, and smaller cities, counties, and towns of Hampton Roads. With miles of waterfront property on the Nansemond and James rivers, present-day Suffolk was formed in 1974 after consolidating with Nansemond County and the towns of Holland and Whaleyville. The current mayor (as of 2021) is Mike Duman.

West End Historic District is a national historic district located at Suffolk, Virginia. The district encompasses 201 contributing buildings and 93 contributing structures in a primarily residential section of the city of Suffolk. The district includes buildings dating from the last decade of the 19th century through the first four decades of the 20th century in a variety of popular architectural styles including Queen Anne and Folk Victorian. The residences were developed to support the growing upper-, middle-, and working-class populations. Notable buildings include the J. C. Causey, Jr. House, Oxford United Methodist Church (1922), and West End Baptist Church (1938).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, with a boundary increase in 2004.

The Suffolk Peanut Company is a historic peanut processing complex at 303 South Saratoga Street in Suffolk, Virginia. The complex includes a number of warehouses dating from the first half of the 20th century, and a peanut processing plant dating back to 1932. The site has been used for the processing, sorting, and storage of peanuts since about 1902. It is believed to be the state's largest peanut processing operation.The company property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Professional Building, also known as the American Bank and Trust Company building, is a historic commercial building located at Suffolk, Virginia. It was built between 1916 and 1919, and is a seven-story, steel frame building with Pyrobar fireproofing. The building measures 35.2 feet wide by 81 feet deep. It is 80 feet tall and has Colonial Revival style architectural details.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is located in the Suffolk Historic District.

Suffolk Public Schools is the branch of the government of the city of Suffolk, Virginia responsible for public K-12 education. Suffolk has multiple advanced/honors through its high schools, such as International Baccalaureate at King's Fork, Project Lead the Way Engineering at Nansemond River, and Project Lead the Way Biomedical at Lakeland. The Superintendent of Schools is Dr. John B. Gordon III. The Chief of Schools is Dr. Stenette Bryd, III and Chief Academic Officer is Dr. Okema Branch. The school system operates 11 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools, one alternative center and one College and Career Academy.

The Battle of Suffolk, also known as the Battle of Hill's Point and the Battle of Fort Huger, took place from April 11 to May 4, 1863, as part of the Siege of Suffolk, during the American Civil War.

The district includes a variety of residential, commercial, governmental, and institutional buildings. They are in a variety of vernacular and popular 19th and 20th century architectural styles including Greek Revival, Queen Anne, and Bungalow. Notable buildings include the Allmond Building (1914), Macedonia A.M.E. Church (c. 1870), National Bank of Suffolk (1914-1920), the Old Post Office (c. 1785), old Nansemond County Courthouse (c. 1837), John Granberry house (c. 1795), Richard Seth Eley House (1878), Jones Building (c. 1925), Suffolk Towers, Virginia Apartments (1918-1920), Causey-Kendrick house (1882), Masonic Hall (1911), Suffolk High School (1922), Jefferson High School (1911), old Methodist Church (1861), St. Paul's Episcopal Church (1895), Suffolk Christian Church (1893), and Congregation of Agudath Achin. Located in the district are the separately listed Phoenix Bank of Nansemond, Professional Building, and Riddick House.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, with boundary increases in 1999, 2002, and 2004.

Building at 216 Bank Street, also known as Holland House Apartments, is a historic home located at Suffolk, Virginia. It was built about 1885, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, three bay stuccoed brick Second Empire style building. It has a polychromatic slate mansard roof and a full-width, one-story, hipped roof front porch. It was built for Colonel Edward Everett Holland as a single-family dwelling. It was occupied by the Suffolk Elks Lodge No. 685 from 1940 to 1965, then converted to a six-unit apartment building.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Riddick House, also known as Riddicks Folly, is a historic home located at Suffolk, Virginia. It was built in 1837, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, five bay by four bay, Greek Revival style brick townhouse. The front facade features a one-story diastyle Doric order portico with a triangular pediment supported by two fluted columns and two plain pilasters. It also has a one-story tetrastyle portico added across the south end in 1905. During the American Civil War, General John J. Peck and his staff maintained Union Army staff headquarters in the house.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It is located in the Suffolk Historic District. Riddick's Folly is open as a historic house museum.
