Nansemond is an extinct jurisdiction that was located south of the James River in Virginia Colony and in the Commonwealth of Virginia (after statehood) in the United States, from 1646 until 1974. It was known as Nansemond County until 1972. From 1972 to 1974, a period of eighteen months, it was the independent city of Nansemond. It is now part of the independent city of Suffolk. English colonists named it for the Nansemond, a tribe of Native Americans who had long been living along the Nansemond River, a tributary of what the English later named as the James River. They encountered the English colonists after they began arriving in 1607 at Jamestown. Although disrupted by being forced off their land and through armed confrontation with colonists, the Nansemond Indian Nation continues to be based in Virginia and was granted state (1985) and federal recognition (2018).

Suffolk is an independent city in Virginia, United States. As of 2022, the population was 99,179. It is the 8th-most populous city in Virginia, the largest city in Virginia by boundary land area as well as the 14th-largest in the country. Suffolk is located in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. This also includes the independent cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, and smaller cities, counties, and towns of Hampton Roads. With miles of waterfront property on the Nansemond and James rivers, present-day Suffolk was formed in 1974 after consolidating with Nansemond County and the towns of Holland and Whaleyville. The current mayor (as of 2021) is Mike Duman.

The 1837 Suffolk head-on collision was the first ever head-on train collision to result in fatalities. The accident occurred on August 11, 1837 in Suffolk, Virginia, United States.

West End Historic District is a national historic district located at Suffolk, Virginia. The district encompasses 201 contributing buildings and 93 contributing structures in a primarily residential section of the city of Suffolk. The district includes buildings dating from the last decade of the 19th century through the first four decades of the 20th century in a variety of popular architectural styles including Queen Anne and Folk Victorian. The residences were developed to support the growing upper-, middle-, and working-class populations. Notable buildings include the J. C. Causey, Jr. House, Oxford United Methodist Church (1922), and West End Baptist Church (1938).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, with a boundary increase in 2004.

The Suffolk Police Department (SPD) is the primary law enforcement agency in Suffolk, Virginia. The department has about 200 full-time staff in total, serving around 100,000 people in an area 428.91 sq mi (1,110.86 km2).

The Suffolk Peanut Company is a historic peanut processing complex at 303 South Saratoga Street in Suffolk, Virginia. The complex includes a number of warehouses dating from the first half of the 20th century, and a peanut processing plant dating back to 1932. The site has been used for the processing, sorting, and storage of peanuts since about 1902. It is believed to be the state's largest peanut processing operation.The company property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Riddick House, also known as Riddicks Folly, is a historic home located at Suffolk, Virginia. It was built in 1837, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, five bay by four bay, Greek Revival style brick townhouse. The front facade features a one-story diastyle Doric order portico with a triangular pediment supported by two fluted columns and two plain pilasters. It also has a one-story tetrastyle portico added across the south end in 1905. During the American Civil War, General John J. Peck and his staff maintained Union Army staff headquarters in the house.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It is located in the Suffolk Historic District. Riddick's Folly is open as a historic house museum.

Professional Building, also known as the American Bank and Trust Company building, is a historic commercial building located at Suffolk, Virginia. It was built between 1916 and 1919, and is a seven-story, steel frame building with Pyrobar fireproofing. The building measures 35.2 feet wide by 81 feet deep. It is 80 feet tall and has Colonial Revival style architectural details.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is located in the Suffolk Historic District.

Suffolk Public Schools is the branch of the government of the city of Suffolk, Virginia responsible for public K-12 education. Suffolk has multiple advanced/honors through its high schools, such as International Baccalaureate at King's Fork, Project Lead the Way Engineering at Nansemond River, and Project Lead the Way Biomedical at Lakeland. The Superintendent of Schools is Dr. John B. Gordon III. The Chief of Schools is Dr. Stenette Bryd, III and Chief Academic Officer is Dr. Okema Branch. The school system operates 11 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools, one alternative center and one College and Career Academy.

The district encompasses 514 contributing buildings, 3 contributing structures, and 3 contributing objects in Suffolk. The district includes a variety of residential, commercial, governmental, and institutional buildings. They are in a variety of vernacular and popular 19th and 20th century architectural styles including Greek Revival, Queen Anne, and Bungalow. Notable buildings include the Allmond Building (1914), Macedonia A.M.E. Church (c. 1870), National Bank of Suffolk (1914-1920), the Old Post Office (c. 1785), old Nansemond County Courthouse (c. 1837), John Granberry house (c. 1795), Richard Seth Eley House (1878), Jones Building (c. 1925), Suffolk Towers, Virginia Apartments (1918-1920), Causey-Kendrick house (1882), Masonic Hall (1911), Suffolk High School (1922), Jefferson High School (1911), old Methodist Church (1861), St. Paul's Episcopal Church (1895), Suffolk Christian Church (1893), and Congregation of Agudath Achin. Located in the district are the separately listed Phoenix Bank of Nansemond, Professional Building, and Riddick House.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, with boundary increases in 1999, 2002, and 2004.

Cedar Hill Cemetery, also known as Green Hill Cemetery, is a historic cemetery and national historic district located at Suffolk, Virginia. The district encompasses four contributing structures, one contributing site, and three contributing objects in the a city-owned, 25-acre, public cemetery dating to 1802. Grave markers within the cemetery date from the early 19th century to the present day. This cemetery is a representative example of public cemetery planning and funerary artwork found in southeast Virginia and Suffolk. The contributing structures include the Darden (1938), Hosier, Hill (1933) and Brewer-Godwin mausoleums and the contributing objects include the Confederate Monument (1889) and World War I Monument.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

The siege of Suffolk, also known as the Battle of Suffolk, took place from April 11 to May 4, 1863, near Suffolk, Virginia during the American Civil War.
