Goldthorpe

Astrea Academy Dearne (legal name The Dearne Academy) is a coeducational secondary school located in the Dearne Valley, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England.It caters mainly for pupils from the Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe and Bolton-on-Dearne areas of Barnsley. It currently has around 1,157 pupils aged 11–16 years.

St John the Evangelist and St Mary Magdalene Church is a parish church in the Church of England Diocese of Sheffield in Goldthorpe, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England.

Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe Halt was a small railway station on the Dearne Valley Railway (DVR) situated between Harlington Halt and Great Houghton Halt. It served the village of Goldthorpe in South Yorkshire, England. The station opened on 3 June 1912. At first, trains were operated on behalf of the DVR by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway; when that company amalgamated with the London and North Western Railway on 1 January 1922, the combined organisation (also known as the London and North Western Railway) absorbed the DVR on the same day.The station closed on 10 September 1951.

Phoenix Park is a park in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, England, that is currently owned by The Land Trust and maintained in partnership with The Conservation Volunteers. It is built on the former site of Hickleton Main Colliery, which ran from 1892 until 1988 when it was closed. The park is 3.3 miles (5.3 km) long.

Hickleton Main Colliery was a coal mine in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, England from 1892 to 1988. In 1933 it employed 2,560 people underground and 500 on the surface. The coal mine's union lodge was the 400th recipient of the Order of Industrial Heroism.On 9 February 1944, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited the colliery and thanked the miners for their war effort during World War II.In 2006 a black granite memorial was erected in Thurnscoe cemetery bearing the names of the 161 miners who died at the pit over the years.The site of the colliery now forms Phoenix Park in Thurnscoe.

Goldthorpe railway station serves the village of Goldthorpe, in South Yorkshire, England. It lies on the Wakefield Line 14.25 miles (23 km) north of Sheffield railway station. It was opened in May 1988. Although it passed through the three settlements of Goldthorpe, neighbouring Thurnscoe and Bolton upon Dearne, the Swinton & Knottingley Joint Railway only provided one station for the area, at Bolton; both the other settlements were served by stations on other lines. Until 1961 this station was called Bolton on Dearne for Goldthorpe and was served by Sheffield-York stopping services. By the late 1980s the low demand for York-bound passengers meant that only a handful of stopping trains used the line. South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, responding to increasing demand for Sheffield-Leeds passengers in the area, and a lack of capacity on the Sheffield-Barnsley-Leeds line, sponsored an hourly service via Bolton to Wakefield Westgate & Leeds, and opened new stations at Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe.

Bolton-upon-Dearne railway station serves the village of Bolton upon Dearne in South Yorkshire, England. It lies on the Wakefield Line 13 miles (21 km) north of Sheffield railway station.

Hickleton and Thurnscoe Halt was a small railway station on the Hull and Barnsley Railway line between Wrangbrook Junction and Wath-upon-Dearne. The halt was built to serve the mining villages of Hickleton and Thurnscoe, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire and was situated in the centre of Thurnscoe at the point where the line crosses over the main Barnsley road. Hickleton village was situated over 0.5 miles (0.8 km) away. The station was situated 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Moorhouse and South Elmsall and consisted of a single wooden platform with a single storey "Double Pavilion" style wooden station building. The platform surface was of gravel and the station opened on 28 August 1902 and closed, along with the others on the line, on 6 April 1929. The line was controlled by two standard H&B style signal boxes named "Hickleton Station" and "Hickleton Colliery". Immediately south of the station was the entrance to Hickleton Main Colliery where the H&B shared sidings with the Swinton and Knottingley Joint Railway line.

The Church of St Andrew the Apostle is the parish church in the village of Bolton upon Dearne in South Yorkshire, England. It is a Church of England church in the Diocese of Sheffield. The building is Grade I listed and features a Saxon nave incorporating arcade from the 12th century. Additions and alterations include the 14th century chancel and north aisle, a 15th/16th century tower and a 19th-century north chapel and vestry. The church contains memorial plaques for parishioners killed in the First and Second World Wars.

Bolton upon Dearne is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England, in the part of the Dearne Valley through which the River Dearne passes. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is approximately 7 miles (11 km) east of Barnsley, 10 miles (16 km) west of Doncaster and 8 miles (13 km) north of Rotherham.
