Windermere and Bowness

Windermere Hotel , originally The Riggs Windermere, is a hotel in Windermere, Cumbria, England, located near Windermere railway station. The hotel opened at the time that the railway link with Kendal was established in 1847. It overlooks the A591 road.

Windermere railway station serves Windermere in Cumbria, England. It is just south of the A591, about 25 min walk or a short bus ride from the lake. The station is located behind a branch of the Booths supermarket chain, which occupies the site of the original station building, in front of the Lakeland store. It is the terminus of the former Kendal and Windermere Railway single-track Windermere Branch Line, with a single platform (much longer than the trains usually seen there today) serving one terminal track. The station is owned by Network Rail and is operated by Northern Trains who provide all passenger train services. The Terrace, a row of cottages, built for railway executives in 1849, is said to have been designed by the architect Augustus Pugin. One of the fireplaces is a copy of one of his in the Palace of Westminster.The selection of the town of Birthwaite as the location of the station serving the lake was what led to it taking the name Windermere, even though it is not on the water (nowadays it has essentially grown together with Bowness-on-Windermere, which touches the lake).

Windermere () is a town and civil parish in the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, England. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 8,245, increasing at the 2011 census to 8,359. It lies about half a mile (1 km) east of the lake, Windermere. Although the town Windermere does not touch the lake (it took the name of the lake when the railway line was built in 1847 and the station was called "Windermere"), it has now grown together with the older lakeside town of Bowness-on-Windermere, though the two retain distinguishable town centres. Tourism is popular in the town owing to its proximity to the lake and local scenery. Boats from the piers in Bowness sail around the lake, many calling at Ambleside or at Lakeside where there is a restored railway. Windermere Hotel opened at the same time as the railway. The civil parish contains both towns, the village of Troutbeck Bridge to the north and several hamlets, including Storrs to the south and Heaning to the east. Belle Isle and part of the lake are also within its boundaries.

St Mary's Church is in the town of Windermere, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Windermere, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with that of St Martin's Church, Bowness-on-Windermere; St Anne's Church, Ings; St Cuthbert's Church, Kentmere; St James' Church, Staveley and Jesus Church, Troutbeck. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

Orrest Head is a hill in the English Lake District on the eastern shores of Windermere. It is the subject of a chapter in Wainwright's The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, and the first fell he climbed. He describes it as "our first ascent in Lakeland, our first sight of mountains in tumultuous array across glittering waters, our awakening to beauty" and also as "a fitting finale, too, to a life made happy by fellwandering". On the summit is a panorama naming the key visible fells which include the Old Man of Coniston, Scafell Pike, Great Gable, Fairfield and the Langdale Pikes. Orrest Head is typically climbed directly from the town of Windermere near the station. Access is made via a reinstated Victorian carriageway which leads towards the summit. The route has been adopted by the Lake District National Park Authority as its 50th "Miles Without Stiles" route which makes it suitable for those with pushchairs and motorised off-road mobility scooters. There are several shorter but steeper shortcuts in a few places but the pathway is much easier if a bit longer.

Windermere and Troutbeck (including Bridge House) is a National Trust property consisting of land around Windermere, a lake in Cumbria, England. This National Trust property includes the head of the Troutbeck Valley, several sites next to Windermere, and six farms. One of the farms — Troutbeck Park — once belonged to Beatrix Potter and was, in fact, her largest farm. Other popular places on the property include Ambleside Roman Fort, Bridge House in Ambleside, and Cockshott Point in Bowness-on-Windermere.

High Lickbarrow is a farm near Windermere in the Lake District of England. It was farmed in a traditional manner by Elizabeth Bottomley, who maintained a herd of rare Blue Albion cattle. Her brother, who lived there too, was the architect and artist Eric Michael Bottomley, and when he died in 2015, he left it to the National Trust to preserve its character. The farm's mires and pastures are a site of special scientific interest because the grazing of the cattle, rather than sheep, left a greater diversity of vegetation.

Windermere School is an independent, coeducational boarding and day school in the English Lake District. Founded in 1863, it has approximately 360 pupils between the ages of 3 and 18, around a third of whom are boarders. The School is split across three campuses on over fifty acres of land: the junior school at Elleray; the senior school and sixth form at Browhead; and Hodge Howe, the school's Royal Yachting Association watersports centre on the shores of Lake Windermere. Windermere was named Sunday Times International Baccalaureate School of the Year for 2017-2018 and is a member of Round Square and the Society of Headmasters & Headmistresses of Independent Schools. The Good Schools Guide describes Windermere as 'a school which revels in a hearty approach to everything from academia to friendships'. In the latest inspection report by the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate (February 2018), Windermere School received the highest grades for the quality of the education provided; it was recognised as ‘Excellent’ for both categories: academic and other achievements, and personal development.

Windermere Jetty: Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories (formerly Windermere Steamboat Museum) is a museum on the eastern shore of Windermere between Bowness-on-Windermere and the town of Windermere in Cumbria, England. It reopened in March 2019 after 12 years' closure and redevelopment work.

Bowness-on-Windermere is a town and former civil parish, now in the parish of Windermere, in South Lakeland, Cumbria, England. Due to its position on the banks of Windermere, the town has become a tourist honeypot. Although their mutual growth has caused them to become one large settlement, the town is distinct from the town of Windermere as the two still have distinguishable town centres. Historically part of Westmorland, in 2012, Bowness was one of the official stop off points for the Olympic torch before it made its way to the Olympic Games opening ceremony. In 1951 the parish had a population of 3345.

Troutbeck Bridge is a village in South Lakeland, Cumbria, England. It is situated 1 mile (1.5 kilometres) north of Windermere on the A591 road running through the Lake District and was historically in the county of Westmorland. The main secondary school for Windermere and Ambleside, The Lakes School, is located in the village, as is the postal sorting office for the area. Troutbeck Bridge takes its name from where the road crosses the Trout Beck. The community is served by a petrol station and convenience store, an inn and restaurant, a secondary school and a gym.

Holehird Gardens is an extensive 10-acre site located near Windermere, Cumbria, England. It is the home of the Lakeland Horticultural Society. The garden consists of a large variety of plants, particularly those suited to the local climate with its high rainfall. It is made up of extensive rock and heather gardens, alpine houses, and a walled garden which is of particular interest for its herbaceous borders. It was once voted by BBC gardeners to be one of the nation's favourite gardens.
