Merrill's Wharf (Portland, Maine)

The Burning of Falmouth (October 18, 1775) was an attack by a fleet of Royal Navy vessels on the town of Falmouth, Massachusetts (site of the modern city of Portland, Maine, and not to be confused with the modern towns of Falmouth, Massachusetts or Falmouth, Maine). The fleet was commanded by Captain Henry Mowat. The attack began with a naval bombardment which included incendiary shot, followed by a landing party meant to complete the town's destruction. The attack was the only major event in what was supposed to be a campaign of retaliation against ports that supported Patriot activities in the early stages of the American Revolutionary War. Among the colonies, news of the attack led to rejection of British authority and the establishment of independent governments. It also led the Second Continental Congress to contest British Naval dominance by forming a Continental Navy. Both Mowat and his superior, Vice-Admiral Samuel Graves, who had ordered Mowat's expedition, suffered professionally as a consequence of the event.

Union Wharf is a historic wharf in Portland, Maine. It stands across Commercial Street from Union Street and, on the waterfront side, between Widgery Wharf (to the north) and Merrill's Wharf (to the south), on the edge of the Fore River. Dating to 1793, it is the city's oldest continuously used wharf. In December 2021, five generations of family ownership ended when the wharf was sold to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.

Commercial Street is a downtown street in the Old Port of Portland, Maine, United States. It is part of U.S. Route 1A. It became the Old Port's waterfront in the early 20th century, replacing Fore Street, after land was reclaimed from the waters of Casco Bay and the Fore River.In 2008, it was named one of the ten best streets in the United States by the American Planning Association. Built upon old piers in the 1850s, fill was pushed into Casco Bay to accommodate the growing railroad and warehousing needs of the port's working waterfront. In the 1970s and 1980s, much of the economic activity on the street was hurt and many of the properties on the street were sold off for non-marine development, including the building of condominiums. In 1987, Portland voters, led by local fisherman based on Commercial Street, halted all non-marine development along the street and adjacent docks. Marine development around Commercial Street returned in the 1990s and 2000s (decade) alongside other economic development, including tourism-related industries.The Maine State Pier, a deepwater marine facility and outdoor music venue, is located at the intersection of Commercial Street and Franklin Street. The Portland Star Match Factory, located at 65-89 West Commercial Street near the West End. The street, which was originally known as Thames Street, becomes West Commercial Street from beneath the Casco Bay Bridge heading west. Thames Street still exists from India Street heading northeast, eventually merging into footpaths beneath the Eastern Promenade.

Cumberland Avenue is a downtown street in Portland, Maine, United States. It runs for around 1.57 miles (2.53 km) from Merrill Street, on Munjoy Hill in the northeast, to Deering Avenue in the southwest. Portland High School is located on Cumberland Avenue between Chestnut Street and Elm Street, while the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception stands between Franklin Street (U.S. Route 1A) and Locust Street. Franklin Towers is located on the western side of the intersection. Peppermint Park, a children's playground, occupies the block between Smith Street and Montgomery Street.

Widgery Wharf (also Widgery's Wharf) is a historic wharf in Portland, Maine, on the edge of the Fore River. Built in the late 1700s, across Commercial Street from the now-demolished Plum Street, the wharf is named for the Widgery family which controlled the local molasses trade at the time of completion. Members of the Widgery family include Congressman William Widgery. The precise date of the wharf's building is unknown, with possible years including 1760, 1774 and 1777.As of the 2000s, much of the wharf was covered during the laying of Commercial Street in the 1850s. Despite this, it is one of the oldest standing structures in Portland. Adjacent (to the south) Union Wharf was completed in 1793, and today shares the same parking area as Widgery Wharf. Chandler's Wharf bounds it to the north.

The Portland Fish Pier is a fishing pier located in Portland, Maine, on the edge of the Fore River. It is a major hub for the commercial fishing industry, and is home to the Portland Fish Exchange, where over 20 million pounds (9.1 kt) of seafood a year are bought and sold. A fishermen's memorial is also located at the pier. Due to the heavy commercial fishing industry presence, there is no ferry service at the Portland Fish Pier. Instead, the Casco Bay Ferry arrives and departs from the nearby Maine State Pier. The pier stands across Commercial Street from Center Street and, on the waterfront side, between Merrill's Wharf (to the north) and Wright Wharf (to the south).The creation of the pier required the demolition of three wharves: Richardson's, Brown's and Smith's. (Brown's Wharf is preserved in the name of the southernmost of the two entrances to the pier, opposite Maple Street.

Chandler's Wharf (also known as Fisherman's Wharf; formerly known as Central Wharf) is a historic wharf in Portland, Maine, on the edge of the Fore River. It stands across Commercial Street from Dana Street and, on the waterfront side, between Long Wharf (to the north) and Widgery Wharf (to the south).The wharf, which is named for John Chandler, is now home to condominiums and businesses.

Moulton Street is a historic downtown street in Portland, Maine, United States. Situated in the heart of the Old Port, it runs for around 233 feet (71 m), from Fore Street in the northwest to Commercial Street in the southeast. One-way from Fore Street, its surface is cobblestoned, with brick sidewalks. The street is named for William H. Moulton, president of the Cumberland Bank, which stood at the corner of Moulton and Commercial. At the corner of Fore and Moulton is a Portland Freedom Trail marker for the anti-slavery bookstore and printshop run by Daniel Colesworthy. The Mariner's Church, built in 1828 in the Greek Revival style, stands at the northern corner of Fore and Moulton. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. C. H. Robinson, a paper company owned by Charles Henry Robinson (1839–after 1926), formerly occupied the entire block, including 9 Moulton Street, which became the home of Mexicali Blues for 28 years. Old Port Tavern occupied part of the Mariner's Church building between 1973 and 2022. At the head of Moulton Street, 375 Fore Street was the home of Bull Feeney's, which closed in 2023 after 21 years in business. Long Wharf, the home of DiMillo's Floating Restaurant, stands across Commercial Street from Moulton Street. Wharf Street, meanwhile, runs southwest from Moulton Street to Union Street, crossing Dana Street en route. Moulton Street has been noted for its boutique stores.

Mariner's Church (also known as the Old Port Tavern and Mariner's Church Banquet Center) is a historic church and commercial building at 368-374 Fore Street in Portland, Maine. Built in 1828, the Greek Revival building historically served as both a church and marketplace. It was for many years the city's largest commercial building, and survived the city's great 1866 fire. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is now home to the Old Port Tavern and other commercial businesses.

Wright Wharf (or Wright's Wharf) is a historic wharf in Portland, Maine, on the edge of the Fore River. It is located on Commercial Street between Portland Fish Pier (to the north) and Hobson's Wharf (to the south). Brown's Wharf formerly stood to the north, where the parking lot for Portland Fish Pier is today. The wharf is named for A. R. Wright, who owned a coal works on it in the early 20th century. The wharf is owned by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.

Middle Street is a downtown street in Portland, Maine, United States. Dating to 1724 (although part of it was a path established by ancient settlers), it runs for around 0.46 miles (0.74 km), from an intersection with Union Street, Spring Street and Temple Street in the southwest, to Hancock Street, at the foot of Munjoy Hill, in the northeast. It formerly originated at what was then known as Market Square (today's Monument Square), but 20th-century redevelopment saw the section between Monument Square and Free Street pedestrianized, and the remaining section—around The Maine Lobsterman monument on Temple Street—erased. Near its midsection, Middle Street crosses Franklin Street. In 1756, when Franklin Street was laid out between Middle Street and Back Street (today's Congress Street), it was known as Fiddle Street. In the early 1950s, the newly created Slum Clearance and Redevelopment Authority Vine-Deer-Chatham project demolished Portland's Little Italy, which was bounded by Franklin Street to the east, Fore Street to the south, Pearl Street to the west and Middle Street to the north. The head of Deer Street was opposite the Thompson Block at 117–125 Middle Street. Middle Street, which is named for its position between Congress Street and Fore Street, passes through Portland's Old Port district.

Fore Street is a downtown street in Portland, Maine, United States. It runs for around 1 mile (1.6 km), from the Eastern Promenade on Munjoy Hill in the northeast to Pleasant Street in the southwest. It was the original waterfront of Portland's Old Port, prior to the reclamation of land which resulted in today's Commercial Street in the early 20th century.Near its midsection, Fore Street crosses Franklin Street. It splits briefly at Boothby Square, shortly after passing the United States Custom House at 312 Fore Street.
