Holmestrand Municipality

Holmestrand is a town and municipality in Vestfold in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Holmestrand. The town was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The neighboring rural municipality of Botne was merged into the municipality of Holmestrand on 1 January 1964. Sande municipality merged into Holmestrand on January 1, 2020. The municipality of Hof was merged into Holmestrand on January 1, 2018.The town lies by the Oslofjord and is built beside the water. It was granted municipal status in 1752, but had been a harbour for exporting of timber/lumber since around 1550. It borders the Oslo Fjord in the east, Tønsberg in the south, and it shares a short border with Larvik in the south-west. It is bordered by Viken in the west and north. Holmestrand is home to Vestfold County's largest lake, Eikeren. It is also Vestfjellet, which is the highest peak in the county.

Gullhaug is a village in the municipality of Holmestrand, Norway. Its population (2012) is 1,900.

Botne is a former municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The parish of Botne was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). According to the 1835 census the municipality had a population of 1,600. In 1942 a part of Botne with 148 inhabitants was moved to Holmestrand, and in 1947 a part with 8 inhabitants was moved to Våle. On 1 January 1964 the rest of Botne was incorporated into Holmestrand. Prior to the merger Botne had a population of 5,656.

Botne Church (Norwegian: Botne kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Holmestrand Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located in the village of Botne. It is one of the churches for the Botne parish which is part of the Nord-Jarlsberg prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Tunsberg. The white, stone church was built in a long church design around the year 1200 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 240 people.

The Smørstein Tunnel is a 288-meter (945 ft) railway tunnel located at Smøstein in Holmestrand, Norway. The tunnel carried a single, electrified track of the Vestfold Line. The need for a tunnel arose after a 19 August 1918 landslide washed away the railway past Smørstein. A temporary track was in place from 28 October, but the Norwegian State Railways (NSB) determined that the geology was too unstable and thus decided to build a tunnel to avoid the poor geological conditions. The tunnel opened on 25 May 1921 and was until 2010 the only tunnel on the Vestfold Line between Drammen and Larvik. The tunnel and the section of line was scheduled to be closed in 2016 with the opening of the Holmestrandsporten tunnel.

Skjeggestad Bridge (Norwegian: Skjeggestadbrua) is the name of two parallel highway bridges on European route E18 in Holmestrand municipality, Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. On 2 February 2015 the southbound bridge partially collapsed. No one was injured and both bridges were closed after collapse. The collapse was caused by a landslide in the quick clay surrounding a support pillar. The southbound lane was fully destroyed in controlled explosive demolitions on 21 February and 25 March 2015. The northbound lane was repaired and reopened to two-way traffic on 26 June 2015. The southbound lane was partially reopened on 1 July and fully operational on 4 July 2016, 17 months after the collapse.

Landøya is an island situated on the north-western part of Asker, in the province of Akershus just outside Oslo, Norway.The Norwegian figure skating star Sonia Henie lived on Landøya, and one of the roads, the Sonja Henies vei, is named after her. The famous Norwegian World War II heroes and members of the resistance, Max Manus and his wife Tikken Manus, also lived there after the Second World War and until the end of their lives. Max died in 1996, and Tikken died in October 2010.

The Holmestrandsporten Tunnel (Holmestrandsporten) is a 12,300-meter (40,400 ft) long double track railway tunnel which runs through Holmestrandfjellet in Sande, Holmestrand and Re in Vestfold og Telemark, Norway. It was opened for traffic on Monday 28 November 2016.Located on the Vestfold Line, the tunnel was built as part of the 14.3-kilometer (8.9 mi) double-track high-speed segment from Holm to Nykirke. The new Holmestrand Station is located inside the mountain in the middle of the tunnel. The total cost of the project was estimated to be 6.6 billion Norwegian Kroner upon completion. The new tunnel reduces traveling time on the Vestfold Line by five minutes.

Holmestrand Station (Norwegian: Holmestrand stasjon) was a railway station on the Vestfold Line located in the town of Holmestrand in Vestfold, Norway. The station was opened in 1881 with the opening of the railway line. It is located 86.09 km (53.49 mi) from Oslo Central Station. The station is at an altitude of 4.8 meters (16 ft) above mean sea level. In October 2016 the station was closed to prepare the opening of the new Holmestrand Station.

Holmestrand Church (Norwegian: Holmestrand kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Holmestrand Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located in the town of Holmestrand. It is one of the churches for the Botne parish which is part of the Nord-Jarlsberg prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Tunsberg. The white, wooden church was built in a Y-shaped design in 1674 using plans drawn up by the architect Christian Heinrich Grosch. The church seats about 300 people.

Hillestad kirke is a church from 1724 in Holmestrand municipality, Vestfold og Telemark county. The building is made of wood, and has 150 seats. The church's graveyard is registered with DIS-Norge.

Holmestrand Private Station (Norwegian: Holmestrand privatstasjon) was a railway station located in Holmestrand, Norway. It served as the terminus station of the private Holmestrand–Vittingfoss Line (HVB), which was in use between 1902 and 1937. The station was connected to the Norwegian State Railways' (NSB) Holmestrand Station on the Vestfold Line.
