Tønsberg Municipality

Tønsberg (pronounced [ˈtœ̂nsbær(ɡ)] ()), historically Tunsberg, is a city and municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, eastern Norway, located around 102 kilometres (63 miles) south-southwest of Oslo on the western coast of the Oslofjord near its mouth onto the Skagerrak. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Tønsberg. The city is the most populous metropolis in the district of Vestfold with a population of 52,419 in 2019. The municipality has a population of 56,293 and covers an area of 329 square kilometres (127 square miles) in 2020. Tønsberg also serves as the seat for the County Governor of Vestfold og Telemark. Tønsberg is generally regarded as the oldest city in Norway, founded by Vikings in the 9th century. Tønsberg was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The rural municipality of Sem was merged into the municipality of Tønsberg on 1 January 1988. The neighboring municipality of Re was merged into Tønsberg on 1 January 2020.It is home to Tønsberg Fortress on Castle Mountain, which includes ruins from Castrum Tunsbergis, Norway's largest castle in the 13th century. An outdoor music festival is held at Tønsberg Fortress every July. Tønsberg is also home of Oseberg Mound, where the 9th-century Oseberg Ship was excavated.

Eik is a neighborhood in the northern part of the town of Tønsberg, located in the municipality of Tønsberg, Norway. It is the home of the football club Eik-Tønsberg.

The Frodeåsen Tunnel (Norwegian: Frodeåstunnelen) is a 1,910-meter (6,270 ft) long twin-tube, four lane road tunnel in Tønsberg, Norway. Part of County Road 300, it runs through Frodeåsen between Kjelle and Velle north of the city center. Built as part of the Tønsberg Package, construction started on 28 October 2004 and the breakthrough was made on 9 March 2006. The tunnel and the new County Road 300 opened on 13 March 2008, creating a bypass road north of the town of Tønsberg.

Tønsberg Gressbane is a football stadium in Tønsberg, Norway. It is the home ground of FK Tønsberg and Tønsberg FK. It was the home ground of Eik-Tønsberg until 2001, when FK Tønsberg was formed.

Slagen Church (Norwegian: Slagen kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Tønsberg Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located in the village of Slagen which is just east of the village of Eik. It is the church for the Slagen parish which is part of the Tønsberg domprosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Tunsberg. The white, stone church was built in a long church design in 1901 using plans drawn up by the architect Halfdan Berle. The church seats about 332 people.

Frodeåsen is a hill just north of the town center of Tønsberg, Norway. Reaching 75 meters (246 ft) above mean sea level, it serves largely as a recreational area. Two tunnels run through the hill: the 1.75-kilometer (1.09 mi) long Jarlsberg Tunnel of the Vestfold Line and the Frodeåsen Tunnel on County Road 300.

Tønsberg Ishall is an ice hockey- and figure skating arena in Tønsberg, Norway. Opened in 1995, it is home to the Tønsberg Vikings of the GET-ligaen and Tønsberg Turnforening figure skating branch. In January 2003 it was the host arena for the Norwegian figure skating championships.

The Jarlsberg Tunnel (Norwegian: Jarlsbergtunnelen) is a 1,750-meter (1.09 mi) long double track railway tunnel which runs through Frodeåsen in Tønsberg, Norway. Located on the Vestfold Line, the tunnel was built as part of the 7.8-kilometer (4.8 mi) double-track high-speed segment from Barkåker to Tønsberg. It is located just north of Tønsberg Station and runs between Frodegata and Tomsbakken. Most of the tunnel is blasted, although 223 meters (732 ft) is in a concrete culvert. Planning of the tunnel started in the late 1990s. Several railway interest groups advised against building the isolated segment of upgraded track without a complete plan for upgrading the entire line. Construction started in April 2009 and the new section and the tunnel opened on 7 November 2011. It was the fourth segment of the Vestfold Line to be upgraded.

Berg interneringsleir (Berg internment camp) was a concentration camp near Tønsberg in Norway that served as an internment and transit center for political prisoners and Jews during the Nazi occupation of Norway.

Solvang Church (Norwegian: Solvang kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Tønsberg Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located in the city of Tønsberg. It is one of the churches for the "Tønsberg domkirke" parish which is part of the Tønsberg domprosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Tunsberg. The white, brick church was built in a long church design in 1969 using plans drawn up by the architect Elisabet Fidjestøl. The church seats about 300 people.

Vestfold Hospital Trust (Norwegian: Sykehuset i Vestfold HF) is a public health trust which serves Vestfold, Norway. Its main facility is Tønsberg Hospital, which supplements divisions in Larvik and Stavern. As of 2019, the hospital had 5,400 employees. The hospital was founded in 1870. It was merged with Horten Hospital, originally the Navy Hospital, established in 1828, in 1998, and merged with Sandefjord Hospital and Larvik Hospital in 2000, and with the Psychiatry of Vestfold Trust in 2012. It is owned by the Norwegian state through Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority. The hospital was established as Jarlsberg and Larvik County Hospital (Jarlsberg og Larvik amts sygehus). It was renamed Vestfold County Hospital (Vestfold fylkessykehus) in 1918 and was significantly extended during Nikolai Nissen Paus' tenure as director (1918–1947). It was later renamed Vestfold Central Hospital (Vestfold sentralsykehus) and to the current Vestfold Hospital (Sykehuset i Vestfold) in 2002.

Tønsberg Hospital (Norwegian: Tønsberg sykehus) is a general hospital situated in Tønsberg, Vestfold og Telemark, Norway. It is the main facility of Vestfold Hospital Trust, part of the Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority. Tønsberg Heliport, Hospital is an asphalt, ground helipad with a diameter of 18.3 meters (60 ft). A new parking garage and is under construction and will receive the a new helipad on top. Until this is completed the Westland Sea King helicopters use the city's fire department to land.
