The James Sparrow House is an excellent example of a Charleston single house in the late Federal style. It is named for a Charleston butcher who acquired the property at 65 Cannon St. in 1797. Several other butchers owned and lived in the house by 1825 when Christian David Happoldt bought the house. (Charleston County deed book O9, page 366) It remained in his family until 1907. (Charleston County deed book U24, page 538) It is a two and one-half story stuccoed brick house, raised on a basement of the same material. The masonry has an embellished by a dog-tooth cornice, with full return, repeated in the rake of the gable end. Quoins of stuccoed brick articulate the corners and a stringcourse of the same material delineates the floor levels. Two interior chimneys, with Gothic arched hoods, on the east side of the house were reconstructed after the earthquake of 1886. The house was listed in the National Register January 30, 1998.By 1995, the house was in terrible condition. Many of its interior details had been lost, and the exterior had suffered the loss of its piazzas. Robert and Nancy Mikell purchased the house and undertook a restoration. An addition to the rear was designed by Charleston architect Randolph Martz.

Mitchell Playground is a public park in Charleston, South Carolina bounded by Fishburne St. (north), Perry St. (east), Sheppard St. (south), and Rutledge Ave. (west). It is named for the Julian Mitchell Elementary School to the immediate east of the playground.

Hominy Grill was a restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina. It was located at 207 Rutledge Avenue, in the heart of historic downtown Charleston. Just a few blocks away from the iconic Rainbow Row, the restaurant has been delighting tourists and locals alike for almost 24 years. Chef Robert Stehling has been honored by the James Beard Foundation Award as the best chef in the Southeastern United States in 2008 and the restaurant has been featured on The Best Thing I Ever Ate (Chocolate Souffle), No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain, Amazing Eats (shrimp & grits and the "Big Nasty" (a fried chicken breast between two buttery biscuits smothered in sausage gravy) and Man v. Food (season 2) (shrimp & grits and the "Big Nasty"). The restaurant features amped-up Southern classics and Lowcountry cuisine with an elevated twist.

The Coming Street Cemetery is located at 189 Coming Street, in Charleston, South Carolina. This Jewish cemetery, one of the oldest in the United States was founded in 1762 by Sephardi Jews and is the oldest Jewish burial ground in the South. Burials in the Coming Street Cemetery are now restricted to the few vacancies in the adjacent family plots. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The Coming Street cemetery is a private burial ground owned by Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue and a donation is requested in order to be given a tour of the cemetery.

The siege of Charleston was a major engagement and major British victory in the American Revolutionary War, fought in the environs of Charles Town (today Charleston), the capital of South Carolina, between March 29 and May 12, 1780. The British, following the collapse of their northern strategy in late 1777 and their withdrawal from Philadelphia in 1778, shifted their focus to the North American Southern Colonies. After approximately six weeks of siege, Major General Benjamin Lincoln, commanding the Charleston garrison, surrendered his forces to the British. It was one of the worst American defeats of the war.

The James Nicholson House is a notable early 19th-century residence in Charleston, South Carolina which has housed the Ashley Hall school since 1909. The house was built ca. 1816 for Patrick Duncan. The architect for the house is not known, but authorities cite William Jay as its possible designer; he worked in Charleston and Savannah between 1817 and 1822. James Nicholson owned the property from 1829 to 1838 when James R. Pringle bought it; after Pringle's death, his family sold it in 1845 to Secretary of the Confederate Treasury General George Trenholm. From 1877 to 1909, it was the home of Charles Otto Witte's family, the foremost banker in South Carolina. Many characters in Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind novel, including Rhett Butler, were based upon residents of this historic homestead, and the O'Hara plantation itself was modeled on its grounds. The Classical Revival building is stuccoed brick. The main two floors are above a high, rusticated basement. The portico is supported by four giant-order Ionic columns with Renaissance capitals. The pediment has a three-part Gothic window. Originally open (as seen in the 1876 photograph to the left), the arches of the basement have been enclosed with windows. The house was listed in the National Register August 30, 1974.

Ashley Hall is a private school for girls located in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, United States for students in pre-kindergarten-grade 12. It was founded in 1909 by Mary Vardrine McBee, who headed the institution for many years. It is the only all-girls' independent private school in South Carolina. Ashley Hall enrolls girls 2 years to grade 12 with a coeducational preschool. For the 2019-2020 school year, Ashley Hall enrolled 640 students. The school motto is Possunt Quae Volunt, or "Girls who have the will have the ability." Ashley Hall's campus features three historic properties: James Nicholson House (McBee House), 172 Rutledge Avenue (c.1816-1820), Warren Street House, 89 Warren Street (c.1823), The Elizabeth Rivers Lewine ’54 House for Global Studies, 79 Rutledge Avenue (c.1876)

The Charleston Arsenal was a United States Army arsenal facility in Charleston, South Carolina, seized by state militia at the outbreak of the American Civil War.The arsenal was constructed between 1825 and 1832 by the United States government near the intersection of Ashley Avenue and Mill Street in Charleston. It served as a storage place for weapons, ordnance, and ammunition for the U.S. Army in antebellum days. (An earlier Federal arsenal, the Old Citadel, was taken out of service and after became a part of The Citadel.) The Charleston arsenal produced a considerable amount of artillery and small arms ammunition during the Mexican–American War and up to the Civil War. With the secession of South Carolina in December 1860, the Arsenal became a target for Charleston militia. South Carolina troops seized the arsenal in late December, and the Confederates held it for much of the war. Josiah Gorgas had the arsenal enlarged and modernized with the installation of steam power. For a time, it was used a barracks to house Confederate troops, including the 26th South Carolina. The arsenal was retaken by Union troops in 1865 when Charleston finally fell. On July 16, 1866, the U.S. government designated the 11.26-acre (4.56 ha) site as a Federal Military Reservation, but in 1879 the Army closed the arsenal. The building and land were sold in 1888, to the Porter Military Academy which occupied the site until it built a new campus west of the Ashley River, and in 1963 the site became part of the Medical University of South Carolina.

Central Baptist Church is a historic Southern Baptist church at 26 Radcliffe Street in Charleston, South Carolina. The Central Baptist Church was completed in 1893 and is considered the first church in Charleston founded and constructed entirely by African-Americans. The structure reflects Carpenter Gothic and Italianate influences and remains in excellent condition. Perhaps the most significant features of the structure are the large folk-art murals portraying biblical scenes including the Crucifixion, the Ascension, and the Resurrection of Christ which date back to 1915. Architect, John Pearson Hutchinson Sr., was hired as a negro carpenter, building contractor, and non-licensed architect. He was also a Deacon of the church. It was built in 1891 and added to the National Register in 1977.
