Carlisle Guildhall is an historic building in Carlisle, Cumbria. It is in the city centre, on the corner of Fisher Street and Greenmarket. It is a Grade I listed building, listed on 1 June 1949. The upper floors now house a museum.

Cumberland is a unitary authority area in Cumbria, England, which means that is a non-metropolitan county and district. It borders Scotland, Northumberland, Westmorland and Furness, and the Irish Sea. Part of the area is in the Lake District National Park and notable landmarks include Carlisle Cathedral, Carlisle Castle and Hadrian's Wall. In comparison to the historic and former administrative county of Cumberland that existed before 1974, the district covers 77% of its area (excluding Penrith area) and 90% of its population. When created, in April 2023, it took over the northern and western part of the 1974–2023 Cumbria non-metropolitan county's administration and the corresponding former Allerdale, Carlisle and Copeland districts, while the new Westmorland and Furness unitary authority took over the remainder.

Carlisle Market Hall is a market hall located in Carlisle, Cumbria, England. It was built between 1887-1889 for Carlisle Corporation by Arthur Cawston and Joseph Graham, both of Westminster, with ironwork manufactured by Cowans, Sheldon & Company. It is one of the few covered Victorian markets remaining in the country. It has been used as a concert venue; notable past performers include Thin Lizzy, Gillan, Status Quo, Uriah Heep, Motörhead, Rory Gallagher, Iron Maiden, Genesis, AC/DC, The Who and Gene Vincent.The market was redeveloped in the 1990s with the number of stalls reduced and one of the two entrances to Scotch Street closed off. The stalls are now located in the northern half (facing West Tower Street) of the hall while the rest of the building (facing Fisher Street) was at first converted into an arcade of small retail units which were never fully occupied and then replaced with a branch of Wilko on the ground floor and TK Maxx above.

The Old Town Hall is a municipal building in the Market Place, Carlisle, England. It is a Grade I listed building.

The Diocese of Carlisle was created in 11 April 1132 by Henry I out of part of the Diocese of Durham, although many people of Cumbric descent in the area looked to Glasgow for spiritual leadership. The first bishop was Æthelwold, who was the king's confessor and became prior of the Augustinian priory at Nostell in Yorkshire. Carlisle was thus the only cathedral in England to be run by Augustinians instead of Benedictines. This only lasted until the reign of Henry III however, when the Augustinians in Carlisle joined the rebels who temporarily handed the city over to Scotland and elected their own bishop. When the revolt was ended, the Augustinians were expelled. The seat of the diocese is the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity in Carlisle. The Diocese covers most of the non-metropolitan county of Cumbria; Alston Moor is part of the Diocese of Newcastle. The diocese originally only covered the northern parts of Cumberland and Westmorland, and expanded to cover almost the entirety of these, as well as the Furness and Cartmel areas of Lancashire, in 1847, from part of the Diocese of Chester, although this did not take effect until 1856.

Carlisle Cathedral is a grade-I listed Anglican cathedral in the city of Carlisle, Cumbria, England. It was founded as an Augustinian priory and became a cathedral in 1133. It is also the seat of the Bishop of Carlisle.Carlisle is the second smallest of England's ancient cathedrals. Its notable features include figurative stone carving, a set of medieval choir stalls and the largest window in the Flowing Decorated Gothic style in England.

Carlisle Tithe Barn is an historic building in Carlisle, Cumbria. It is a Grade I listed building, listed on 1 June 1949.

Carlisle city walls were a defensive structure surrounding the centre of Carlisle, Cumbria. The city walls ran from Carlisle Castle in the north-west of the city to The Citadel in the south-east. Between these points, the city was protected by the former North and East Walls (demolished around 1811) and the West Walls which remain largely intact. The line of the walls can still be followed with the exception of the southernmost end of the West Wall which has been built over. The perimeter, including the castle, is approximately 2.2 kilometres (1.4 mi) which is comparable to Southampton town walls but less than Chester city walls.

Carlisle Dominican Friary was a friary in Cumbria, England. The Dominican order settled in Carlisle in 1233. The convent of the Black Friars, as this was known, was located between what was later the St. Cuthberts's church and the English gate. Later archeological findings show that the convent was built over an earlier Roman settlement.The friary was dissolved along with other religious houses in the spring of 1539 by Richard, Bishop of Dover. Unlike other houses the buildings were retained and converted to a council chamber and storehouse. None of these remain in the present city of Carlisle.

Border was a rural district of Cumberland, England from 1934 to 1974. It was formed by a County Review Order in 1934, by a merger of Longtown Rural District, most of Brampton Rural District and nearly all of Carlisle Rural District, as well as a part of Penrith Rural District. It entirely surrounded the County Borough of Carlisle. In 1974 it was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, going on to form an enlarged City of Carlisle district with Carlisle.

The siege of Carlisle (December 1745) took place from 21 to 30 December during the Jacobite rising of 1745, when a Jacobite garrison surrendered to government forces led by the Duke of Cumberland. The town had been captured by the Jacobite army that invaded England in November 1745 and reached as far south as Derby, before turning back on 6 December. They re-entered Carlisle on 19 December; leaving a garrison of 400 men, the main army continued its retreat into Scotland the next day. Advance elements of the government army reached Carlisle on 21 December, but siege operations were delayed until their heavy artillery arrived six days later. They commenced firing on 28 December, and the Jacobites surrendered on 30th; 384 prisoners were taken, some of whom were later executed and many others sentenced to transportation to the West Indies.

The Appin Murder (Scottish Gaelic: Murt na h-Apainn) was the assassination of Colin Roy Campbell, the Clan Campbell tacksman of Glenure, on 14 May 1752 near Appin in the west of Scotland. The murder occurred in the aftermath of the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and led to the execution of James Stewart of the Glens, often characterized as a notorious miscarriage of justice. The murder inspired events in Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novel Kidnapped.
