Church Street Market

The Theatre Royal, Marylebone (also known as the Marylebone Theatre, among other names) was a Victorian era theatre in the Marylebone area of London. Built in 1831, at various other times it was a music hall, a cinema and warehouse until it was damaged by fire in 1962, when it was demolished.

Church Street is a thoroughfare in Marylebone, located in West London, and is within the West End of London. Located in the City of Westminster, it runs from Lisson Grove on a south west diagonal crossing Edgware Road and finishing at Paddington Green and the nearby St Mary's Church, from which the street gets its name. The Church Street electoral ward is named after the street. The nineteenth century Theatre Royal, Marylebone was located here. During the Second World War the area was badly bombed and was heavily redeveloped which, along with slum clearance, means most of the buildings date from the twentieth century. In the modern era it is known for the Church Street Market.

The Cockpit Theatre is a fringe theatre in Marylebone, London. Designed by Edward Mendelsohn and built in 1969–70 by the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) as a community theatre, it is notable as London's first purpose-built Theatre in the round since the Great Fire of London. When ILEA was disbanded in 1990, ownership of the Cockpit was transferred to the London Borough of Westminster, who made it part of the newly renamed City of Westminster College. It remains one of a handful of purpose-built theatre training venues in the capital and is still owned and operated by the City Of Westminster College.Between 1993 and 1995 the Soho Theatre Company took up residence and relaunched itself after a period of homelessness. During this period they premiered the works of over 35 new writers.In January 2011, owners City of Westminster College moved into their new main building at Paddington Green which included a new theatre. This change meant The Cockpit is no longer used for day-to-day teaching or academic office space and is now operating as a full-time theatre and training venue.

Church Street is an electoral ward of the City of Westminster. The population at the 2011 Census was 11,760. The ward covers the eponymous street market and the surrounding area of Lisson Grove, to the north of the Edgware Road. The area is currently the focus of regeneration plans by the council. The ward returns three councillors to Westminster City Council, with an election every four years. At the last election in May 2022, Matt Noble, Aicha Less and Abdul Toki, all candidates from the Labour Party, were elected to represent the ward. Since the ward was created for the formation of the council in 1965, it has usually elected Labour councillors, with most results indicating a safe seat for the party. The sole occasion another party represented the ward was following the by-election of 24 July 2008, when a seat was won by a Conservative candidate for the first and only time to date, beating Labour's candidate Dave Rowntree, the drummer from the band Blur. The seat was regained by Labour at the subsequent council election in May 2010, held on the same day as the general election. Previous councillors elected for the area include the Dowager Countess of Lucan, barrister and current QC Gavin Millar, and subsequent London Assembly AM Murad Qureshi.

Lisson Grove is a street and district in Marylebone, City of Westminster, London. The neighbourhood contains a few important cultural landmarks, including Lisson Gallery, Alfies Antique Market, Red Bus Recording Studios, the former Christ Church, now the Greenhouse Centre, and the Seashell of Lisson Grove. The heart of the community and retail/services zone is Church Street Market, which runs between Lisson Grove itself and Edgware Road.The market specialises in antiques and bric-à-brac, and has flourished since the 1960s. The area saw its suburban decades – on the edge of London – from the late 18th century, and some fine Georgian terraces remain. Early residents included artists such as Benjamin Haydon and Charles Rossi, whose former cottage still stands at 116 Lisson Grove. Lord's Cricket Ground adjoined Lisson Grove in the early nineteenth century before re-locating to St Johns Wood, the similar-size district to the north. The area is bounded by St John's Wood Road to the north, Regent's Park to the east, Edgware Road to the west and Marylebone Road to the south. Church Street electoral ward, as currently drawn, is approximately the same. Lisson Grove is predominantly residential, with a mid-to-high population density for Inner London. The council's profile describes Church Street as an ethnically diverse ward, having one of the highest concentrations of social housing in the borough with a substantial estate renewal programme underway.

Alfies Antique Market is a large indoor market located on Church Street in Lisson Grove, London. It houses over seventy-five dealers offering antiques; including silver, furniture, jewellery, paintings, ceramics, glass and vintage clothing.Notable customers have included the designers Tom Dixon, Nina Campbell, Jasper Conran and Kelly Hoppen as well as celebrity visitors Michael Jackson, Julia Roberts, Rod Stewart, Kate Moss, Stella McCartney and many more.

Nina's Hair Parlour was a vintage makeup and hair salon established in 2005 by Nina Butkovich-Budden. It was based in Marylebone, London, England.Nina Butkovich-Budden, a Croatian national began specialising in vintage hair while working at the Cut and Clipper, a small salon on The Cut, Waterloo. Butkovich-Budden quickly established media interest, which in turn generated more customers. Eventually larger premises were need as the small salon could no longer cope with demand.Butkovich-Budden teamed up with the makeup artist Issidora, in June 2008 and the pair opened a bigger salon in Alfie's Antique Market in Marylebone. The salon's interior was designed to emulate the salons of the 1950s, with original chair mounted hairdryers and pistachio coloured walls. Home to a small hair and makeup museum, it was often hired for filming and fashion photo shoots. Nina and Issidora work closely with hair and makeup brands Oribe and Cosmetics à La Carte. Butkovich-Budden was interviewed on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour alongside Nicky Clarke and her entire team appeared on the BBC's Children In Need show Celebrity Scissorhands alongside Lee Stafford and late Steve Strange, as vintage hair and makeup experts. Issidora and Butkovich-Budden were instrumental in integration of freelance fashion industry makeup and hair artists into the BECTU union. After a two year long campaign and contribution from the freelancers across United Kingdom, rate card was published for the first time on the BECTU website in November 2015.They continue to work on BBC documentary programs creating makeup and hair styling.

King Solomon Academy is a non-selective, non-denominational, mixed all-through school within the English academy programme, located in Marylebone, London. It occupies the site of the former Rutherford School.

Rutherford School was a secondary modern school, later comprehensive school, in Paddington, London, England. It opened in 1960 and in 1981 amalgamated with Sarah Siddons Girls' School and Paddington School to form the North Westminster Community School. The site is now occupied by the Ark King Solomon Academy. It was built from 1958 to 1960, designed by the architects Leonard Manasseh and Ian Baker, and is a Grade II* listed building.Alumni include actors Phil Daniels and Danny John-Jules, musicians Paul Hardcastle and Courtney Pine, footballers Tony Grealish, Jeff Chandler and DJ Gary Crowley. Both Barry Hines (the author of A Kestrel for a Knave) and Bob Wilson (former Arsenal FC and national Scotland goalkeeper and broadcaster) taught at Rutherford Comprehensive School in the early 1960s.

The Showroom is a not-for-profit art gallery in Marylebone, London, which displays site-specific works by emerging artists. The gallery presents four shows each year, a schedule that allows artists the time to develop and realise their work on site. Established in 1983, the gallery was based at a site in Bethnal Green, East London. In 2008, the gallery relocated to a building in Marylebone, London, on Penfold Street, which was converted by Berlin-based architects ifau + Jesko Fezer.Solo shows at The Showroom in the former East End space included Mona Hatoum, Sam Taylor-Wood, Simon Starling, Christina Mackie, Jim Lambie, Claire Barclay, and Eva Rothschild. The Showroom receives fixed-term funding from Arts Council of England and other organisations and individuals. The director Elvira Dyangani Ose replaced Emily Pethick in 2017. Previous directors were Kirsty Ogg, Kim Sweet and David Thorp.

Lisson Gallery is a contemporary art gallery with locations in London and New York, founded by Nicholas Logsdail in 1967. The gallery represents over 50 artists such as Art & Language, Ryan Gander, Carmen Herrera, Richard Long, John Latham, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, Jonathan Monk, Julian Opie, Richard Wentworth, Anish Kapoor, Richard Deacon and Ai Weiwei.

The Elstree to St. John's Wood Cable Tunnel, known as The London Connection during construction, is a 20 km long, 3m wide tunnel beneath northwest London. Constructed between 2001 and 2005, the tunnel carries high voltage transmission lines from Elstree substation in Hertfordshire to Lodge Road sub station in Westminster at a depth of 20m below street level.The tunnel runs beneath the A5 road for the majority of its length, and houses a single 400 kV power transmission circuit with a rated capacity of 3700 A. There is provision for a second circuit to be installed in the future.A remotely operated, battery powered monorail system runs along the tunnel, allowing the cables to be inspected remotely using infrared cameras.
