Bolton has had a market since 1253. The Market Hall of 1854 is now a Grade II listed building. The present market is on Ashburner Street. It is open every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5pm. In 2024 a new Food Hall was opened. It is in informal competition with nearby Bury Market and celebrated in 2025 when the town was rated the 10th most 'quintessential' market town in UK. The market has featured in Faking It on Channel 4.

Bolton Museum is a public museum and art gallery in the town of Bolton, Greater Manchester, Northern England, owned by Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council. The museum is housed within the grade II listed Le Mans Crescent near Bolton Town Hall and shares its main entrance with the central library in a purpose built civic centre. The building has good accessibility.

Great Bolton was a township of the civil and ecclesiastical parish of Bolton le Moors in the Salford hundred of Lancashire, England and later a separate civil parish. Despite its name, Great Bolton had a smaller acreage than its northern neighbour Little Bolton from which it was separated by the River Croal. In 1891 the parish had a population of 47,067.

Bolton Town Hall in Victoria Square, Bolton, Greater Manchester, England, was built between 1866 and 1873 for the County Borough of Bolton to designs by William Hill of Leeds and George Woodhouse of Bolton. The town hall was extended in the 1930s to the designs of Bradshaw, Gass and Hope and has been designated a Grade II* listed building by English Heritage.

The Metropolitan Borough of Bolton (listen) is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England, named after its largest town, Bolton, but covering a far larger area which includes Blackrod, Farnworth, Horwich, Kearsley, Westhoughton, and part of the West Pennine Moors. It has a population of 276,800. The boundaries were set by the Local Government Act 1972, and cover eight former local government districts; seven Urban Districts from the administrative county of Lancashire, and the County Borough of Bolton. The metropolitan districts of Bury, Salford and Wigan lie to the east, south and west respectively; and the unitary authority of Blackburn with Darwen and the non-metropolitan district of Chorley in Lancashire to the north and north-west.

96.5 Bolton FM is a community radio station based in Bolton, United Kingdom. Their studios are located above Bolton's Ashburner Street Market. The station launched at 11am on 20 June 2009 at the One Bolton Festival event. They were awarded the title of 'Best Loved Local Radio Station in the UK' during the 2011 nationwide "Thebestof" campaign called '14 Days of Love' as well as winning numerous other awards. Featuring regular shows such as This is Bolton with Kevan Williams, Weekend Breakfast with Andy Haslam, Hits and Headlines with Big H and Club Tropicana with Kevin Gurney, the station appeals to a wide audience. They can also be regularly seen out in the Bolton Community hosting roadshows and broadcasting live from several locations. The station also provided technical staff for two Bolton Hospice events: Strictly Learn to Dance, and the Midnight Memories walk. The station has several high-profile connections including former Labour Whip Frank White as the station's former chairman, and radio professional Darryl Morris as a former Director. Former Big Brother UK housemate Luke Marsden is also well-known for having presented his own show on the station. The station broadcasts a live sports programme on Saturday afternoons, including live match commentaries on Bolton Wanderers league and cup matches during the football season.

The Storming of Bolton, sometimes referred to as the "Bolton massacre", was an event in the First English Civil War which happened on 28 May 1644. The strongly Parliamentarian town was stormed and captured by Royalist forces under Prince Rupert. It was alleged that up to 1,600 of Bolton's defenders and inhabitants were slaughtered during and after the fighting. The "massacre at Bolton" became a staple of Parliamentarian propaganda.

Bolton Great Moor Street railway station was the first station in Bolton. It was opened on 11 June 1831 by the Bolton and Leigh Railway. Originally named Bolton, it was renamed Bolton Great Moor Street in October 1849. The original street level station was replaced by a temporary station at Bolton Crook Street Goods Yard on 1 August 1871 while the new station was built in a classic Italian style. It opened either on 1 April 1875 or on 28 September 1874 on the same site as the original station but at a higher level. The rebuilt station had four platforms covered by a roof. Its reconstruction coincided with the building of the direct line to Manchester Exchange via Walkden Low Level by the London and North Western Railway which opened on 1 April 1875. Local trains to and from Kenyon Junction via Chequerbent used the station's western platforms 1 & 2 whilst trains to and from Manchester Exchange via Walkden used Platforms 3 & 4.The station closed for regular passenger use by British Railways on 29 March 1954, although holiday and football specials ran until 1958 and an unadvertised workmen's service to Monton Green continued for some months. An enthusiasts' special visited on 21 September 1963 and on 9 May 1964 another visited the adjacent Crook St goods yard, this was the last passenger train on LNWR lines in the Bolton area.Tracks in the station were lifted in April 1964. The station was demolished in October 1966 and the area redeveloped.

The Church of St George, Bolton, is a redundant church in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England (grid reference SD714095). It is currently a craft centre and was designated a Grade II* listed building on 26 April 1974. It was completed in 1796 and had a shallow chancel and south chapel added or rebuilt 1907 by James Simpson.
