Hlaingthaya massacre

Hlaingthaya East township (Burmese: လှိုင်သာယာ (အရှေု့ပိုင်း) မြို့နယ်) is a township in Insein District, Yangon Region, Myanmar. The township is part of the city of Yangon and is divided into 9 urban wards and 5 village tracts grouping together a total of 9 villages. It is one of the few Yangon city townships with rural settlements. The township was split from the larger Hlaingthaya Township on 27 January 2020 according to Legal Notification 32/2020. While Hlaingthaya is a largely working class suburb, developers have also built luxury housing developments in the southeastern part of the township.

The Battle of Insein was a 1949 battle during the Karen conflict where the Karen National Defence Organisation briefly captured the town of Insein, 9 miles from Rangoon. After 111 days of intense fighting, the KNDO failed their goal of capturing Rangoon, and retreated into the countryside.

Insein Prison (Burmese: အင်းစိန်ထောင်) is located in Yangon Division, near Yangon (Rangoon), the old capital of Myanmar (formerly Burma). From 1988 to 2011 it was run by the military junta of Myanmar, named the State Law and Order Restoration Council from 1988 to 2003 and the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) from 2003 to 2011, and was used largely to repress political dissidents. The prison is notorious worldwide for its inhumane conditions, corruption, abuse of inmates, and use of mental and physical torture.

Insein Township (Burmese: အင်းစိန်မြို့နယ်, pronounced [ɪ́ɰ̃sèiɰ̃ mjo̰nɛ̀]) is located in northern Yangon. The township comprises 21 wards, and shares borders with Shwepyitha township in the north, Hlaingthaya township in the west, Mingaladon township in the east and Mayangon township in the south. Insein is home to the Insein Prison, the most notorious prison in the country that houses hundreds of political prisoners. Until the 1990s, Insein, about 20 miles (32 km) from central Yangon, was beyond Yangon's city limits although by the 1980s, Insein was already integrated with the rest of the city. With the expansion of Yangon's city limits in the 1990s which also included founding new satellite towns, Insein was formally incorporated into Yangon.

Hlaingthaya Township (Burmese: လှိုင်သာယာ မြို့နယ်, pronounced [l̥àiɰ̃θàjà mjo̰nɛ̀]; also spelt Hlaing Tharyar and Hlinethaya) is located in the western part of Yangon, Myanmar. One of the biggest and most populous townships in the country with 15% of Yangon's urban population living there, Hlaingthaya also has a major industrial and factory presence. While Hlaingthaya is a largely working class suburb, developers have also built luxury housing developments in the southeastern part of the township. The township comprises 20 wards and nine village tracts and shares borders with Htantabin Township in the north and west, Insein Township, Mayangon Township, and Hlaing Township in the east across the Yangon River, and Twante Township in the south.

The Insein General Hospital (Burmese: အင်းစိန်ဆေးရုံ) is a 500-bed public hospital and teaching hospital located in northern part of Yangon, with 9 in-patient wards and 6 specialty clinics.

Bayinnaung Market (Burmese: ဘုရင့်နောင်ဈေး; also Bayintnaung Market), located in northwestern Yangon, is the largest agricultural commodities trading market in Myanmar. Established in 1990, the market complex consists of two-story shop houses with floor areas of 1,200 and 2,400 square feet (110 and 220 m2). It is the only legally permitted wholesale center of beans and pulses in the country, which exported 1.34 million tonnes of beans and pulses in 2007 for a total value of US$750 million.Matpe is the most common bean and pulse export at the market.In August 2009, about 4000 tonnes of matpe, green mung, pigeon peas and chickpeas were traded daily. The market is the main wholesale center of dried fish and prawns for mainly domestic markets. The market is at the center of the planned Internet-based commodities information network that will link all of the country's wholesale commodity exchange centers, to achieve consistent pricing and operations in line with international market prices.Myanmar's wholesale commodity exchanges are currently only connected by telephone. As of October 2008, only Banyinnaung has the system, which displays local prices for beans and pulses in real time. Domestic and international prices for edible oil crops, onions, garlic, potatoes, chili are expected to be added soon. Since August 2009, the Myanmar Pulses, Beans and Sesame Seed Merchants’ Association requires that all domestic and international transactions be concluded here at Bayinnaung Market.
