The Mangaone River is a river of the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand's North Island. Its source is numerous streams draining the slopes of the Te Waka Range in the Rukumoana Forest area. The river flows southeast then south through rugged hill country until it meets the Tutaekuri River. For most of its course it is deeply incised in the tephra, ignimbrite and lapilli volcanic rocks, which are a bit over 30,000 years old. The deep valleys are partly due to the soft rocks and partly to the rapid rise of the Mohaka Fault, at over 3 mm (0.12 in) a year.Totara was being felled along the river in the 1860s. The river suffers from pollution by nitrogen and phosphorus.After Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, Rissington bridge was replaced by a 43 m (141 ft) long Bailey bridge on 31 March 2023 and Dartmoor bridge on 5 April. They are the only bridges over the river.

Runanga Lake is one of several small lakes (the others including Oingo Lake and Potaka Lake) located to the northwest of the city of Hastings in the Hawke's Bay Region of the eastern North Island of New Zealand. Water from the lake flows into the Ngaruroro River.

Puketapu is a rural community in the Hastings District and Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand's North Island. It is located west of Napier and north of Hastings. In February 2023 Puketapu was severely effected by flooding from Cyclone Gabrielle. Water from the Tutaekuri River rose above homes and damaged much of the agricultural land.

Sherenden is a settlement in the Hastings District and Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand's North Island.It was established around a school house in 1916. The community fundraised to build a swimming pool in 1961.The community of Otamauri is located west of the Sherenden village.

Omahu is a village in the Hastings District and Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand's North Island. It is located on State Highway 50, north-west of Hastings on the north bank of the Ngaruroro River.The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "the place where Mahu ran out of food" for Ōmahu.A missionary site was established at Omahu in the early 19th century.Omahu was inundated by flooding during Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023 after the Ngaruroro River burst its banks, destroying dozens of houses.

Fernhill is a village and rural community in the Hastings District and Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand's North Island. It is located on State Highway 50, north-west of Hastings on the south bank of the Ngaruroro River.Fernhill was one of the few places in New Zealand where the January 2018 lunar eclipse was visible.

Hawke's Bay (Māori: Te Matau-a-Māui) is a region on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. The region is named for Hawke Bay, which was named in honour of Edward Hawke. The region's main centres are the cities of Napier and Hastings, while the more rural parts of the region are served by the towns of Waipukurau, Waipawa, and Wairoa.

Ikaroa-Rāwhiti is a New Zealand parliamentary Māori electorate that was formed for the 1999 election. It covers the eastern North Island from East Cape south through Hawke's Bay and the Wairarapa to Wainuiomata and most of the Hutt Valley, but not southern Lower Hutt or Wellington City. It was held by Parekura Horomia of the Labour Party from 1999 until his death in 2013. A by-election to replace him was held on 29 June 2013 and was won by Labour's Meka Whaitiri, who has held the seat since. Whaitiri left the Labour Party in early May 2023 and joined Te Pāti Māori. According to a ruling by the speaker of the House, Whaitiri continued to represent the electorate, not on behalf of a party, but as an independent. Whaitiri was defeated by Labour's Cushla Tangaere-Manuel in 2023.

Pekapeka Wetland is a wetland reserve located 12 kilometres by road south of Hastings in the Poukawa Basin of Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The Hawke's Bay Regional Council began restoring the wetland in the late 1990s with the removal of willows and the construction of a perimeter fence. The Council initially owned about half of the wetland, but this has been increased to 90%. It is rated as the second most ecologically valuable wetland in Hawke's Bay. The Poukawa Stream, which drains Lake Poukawa in the south-west, runs through the Pekapeka Wetland.

Waiohiki is a rural community in the Hastings District and Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand's North Island. It is located between the Ngaruroro and Tutaekuri Rivers, south of Taradale and north of Hastings on State Highway 50. Napier Golf Club is located at Waiohiki. Waiohiki was inundated by flooding during Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023 after the Ngaruroro River burst its banks. Dozen of houses were destroyed. One person died after being swept away by floodwater at Waiohiki.

Poraiti is a semi-rural suburb of the city of Napier, in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand's eastern North Island.The area is vulnerable to scrub fires.
