South Black Hill

Scald Law is a hill in Midlothian, Scotland. At 579 metres (1,900 ft) it is the highest of the Pentland Hills. The hill is composed of Devonian volcanic rock.

Eight Mile Burn is a small settlement in Midlothian, South East Scotland, at the base of Pentland Hills Regional Park. It is approximately 11 miles from the centre of Edinburgh, midway between Silverburn and Nine Mile Burn on the A702.

Silverburn is a small hamlet near Penicuik, in Midlothian, south-east Scotland. It has a small community centre, with a garden surrounding the hall, which featured on the BBC Television programme The Beechgrove Garden in June 2008. It has a small population of just over 60 and is about 8 miles south of Edinburgh.

Carnethy Hill, the second highest of the Pentland Hills, is a hill 3 miles (5 km) north-west of Penicuik, Scotland. It lends its name to the Carnethy 5 hill race held annually since 1971, and the Carnethy Hill Running Club. Loganlea Reservoir lies on the Northwest flank of the hill.

Brunstane Castle (alternatively Brunston, Brunstain or Brunstone Castle) is a ruined tower house, dating from the 16th century, around 2 miles (3.2 km) south-west of Penicuik, on the north bank of the North Esk, in Midlothian, Scotland.It is not to be confused with Brunstane House, Edinburgh.

Nine Mile Burn is a hamlet in Midlothian, Scotland, the last in Midlothian when heading south on the A702 road. It is located at the foot of the Pentland Hills, near Penicuik and about 2 km north-east of the village of Carlops.

Threipmuir Reservoir is a reservoir in the City of Edinburgh Council area, Scotland, UK. It is situated to the south of Edinburgh at the base of the Pentland Hills, two miles south of Balerno. Threipmuir reservoir is located behind an earth dam, constructed to a design by Scottish civil engineer James Jardine. The reservoir was formed between 1843 and 1848 as a compensation reservoir for the Water of Leith by the Edinburgh Water Company. The reservoir spillway discharges at the eastern end, from where the discharge flows into Harlaw Reservoir. Bavelaw Castle lies on its south side.

Bavelaw Castle is a historic house in the City of Edinburgh Council area, Scotland. It is north of Hare Hill in the Pentland Hills, four miles west of Penicuik, and two miles south of Balerno, above Threipmuir Reservoir. It was designated as a Category A listed building in 1971.

Harlaw Reservoir is a small reservoir in the City of Edinburgh Council area, Scotland, UK, situated at the base of the Pentland Hills near Currie and Balerno. It is located behind an earth gravity dam, constructed between 1843 and 1848 to the east and downstream of Threipmuir Reservoir, to a design by civil engineer James Jardine. The work was commissioned by the Edinburgh Water Company as a compensation reservoir for the Water of Leith.

The Battle of Rullion Green took place on 28 November 1666, near the Pentland Hills, in Midlothian, Scotland. It was the only significant battle of the Pentland Rising, a brief revolt by Covenanter dissidents against the Scottish government. Sparked by opposition to the restoration of episcopalianism in the Church of Scotland, a Covenanter army under Colonel James Wallace was defeated by a government force led by Tam Dalyell of the Binns. While casualties were relatively light, between 40 to 50 Covenanters were killed and up to 85 prisoners taken, many of whom were alleged to have been tortured. 36 were executed and others transported to Barbados, while unrest continued over the next two decades, culminating in the extended period of repression from 1679 to 1688 known as The Killing Time.

Penicuik House (alternative spellings in use until mid 19th century: Penycuik, Pennycuik) survives as the shell of a formerly grand estate house in Penicuik, Midlothian, Scotland. The 18th-century palladian mansion (at NT2172659208) was built on the site of an earlier house by Sir James Clerk, 3rd Baronet. It was destroyed by fire in 1899 and a major restoration, stabilising the ruin, was completed in 2014 by G Brown Stonemasons. Old Penicuik House and New Penicuik House (the former stables block in which the Clerk family were living even before the fire) are both designated Category A listed buildings by Historic Environment Scotland.
