Gulset Church

Gulset is a suburb located in Skien, Telemark, Norway. It is the most populated suburb in Skien with over 7,000 inhabitants.

Skien (Norwegian: [ˈʂêːən] ) is a municipality in Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Grenland, although historically it belonged to Grenmar/Skiensfjorden, while Grenland referred the Norsjø area and Bø. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Skien, which is also the administrative centre of the whole county. Some of the notable villages in the municipality include Åfoss, Hoppestad, Klovholt, Luksefjell, Melum, Kilebygda, Skotfoss, Sneltvedt, and Valebø.The 779-square-kilometre (301 sq mi) municipality is the 147th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Skien is the 18th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 55,924. The municipality's population density is 77.8 inhabitants per square kilometre (202/sq mi) and its population has increased by 5.5% over the previous 10-year period. The conurbation of Porsgrunn/Skien is reckoned by Statistics Norway to be the seventh largest urban area in Norway, straddling an area of three municipalities: Skien municipality (about 62% of the population), Porsgrunn Municipality (30%), and Bamble Municipality (8%). This entire area is home to more than 100,000 people. The municipality has existed since 1838, but the city of Skien is one of Norway's oldest cities, with an urban history dating back to the Middle Ages, and received privileges as a market town in 1358. From the 15th century, the city was governed by a 12-member council. Skien was historically a centre of seafaring, timber exports, and early industrialization. It was one of Norway's two or three largest cities between the 16th and 19th centuries. It was also one of Norway's most internationally oriented cities, with extensive contact with its export markets in the Low Countries, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. It retained its position as Eastern Norway's leading commercial city until the 19th century, when it gradually started to lose importance to the emerging capital of Christiania following the Napoleonic Wars. The city was the birthplace of playwright Henrik Ibsen, and many of his famous dramas are set in places reminiscent of early 19th-century Skien.

Falkum is a neighborhood in Skien, Norway, with 15,234 residents. It is a high-density, youthful neighborhood with a high percentage of families headed by single parents. Falkum is largely a working-class neighbourhood, with a mix of low and high income residents, as well as many immigrants.

The Skagerak Arena is a football stadium located in Skien, Norway. It was formerly called Odd Stadion, and was built in 1923 as the home ground of Eliteserien club Odd. The stadium is often referred to as Falkum, being situated in that area of Skien. The stadium has been undergoing an extensive redevelopment process, begun in November 2006, which produced a modern all-seater venue by April 2008. Part of the finance Odd needed for the project was obtained through the lease of the stadium's naming rights to the club's main sponsor since 1995, the Norwegian power company Skagerak Energi. The stadium will therefore be known as Skagerak Arena until at least 2017. The pitch has been rotated 90 degrees in order to free up space. As is increasingly common in Norway, the new surface is artificial. The old main stand is now an end stand, incorporated into the new structure as the only surviving feature of the old stadium. Three new two-tiered stands was completed between 2007 and 2008. The east and west stands has a capacity of 4,300 while the south end seats around 3,000. Construction of the west stand had progressed far enough by April 2007 to allow spectators on the lower tier for the first home match of the season, on 15 April. Total capacity was at first 6,000 And increased gradually throughout 2007. The old stadium had a capacity of about 8,600, of which 5,600 were seated. The venue has hosted Norway national under-21 football team matches three times, playing 0–0 against Portugal on 9 May 1979, 2–1 against Romania on 18 August 1998 and 3–1 against Scotland on 19 August 2003. In a 2012 survey carried out by the Norwegian Players' Association among away-team captains, Skagerak Arena was ranked tenth amongst league stadiums, with a score of 3.07 on a scale from one to five.

Fossum is a neighborhood in Skien, Telemark, Norway. Historically the neighborhood was associated with Fossum Ironworks (Fossum Jernverk), the iron mines which dated from the 16th century and with Fossum Works (Fossum Verk), the ironworks. Fossum Ironworks, which was one of the oldest ironworks in Norway, closed down in 1867.Fossum Manor (Fossum hovedgård) is a manor house located north of Skien which has given its name to the neighborhood. The manor house was built as a residence for Severin Løvenskiold. Construction was started in 1804. It was designed by Danish architect Christian Frederik Hansen and was completed in 1818. The manor been owned by the Løvenskiold family for centuries and prominent family members have been born here.The local sports team is Fossum IF, which is often called "Fossum (Skien)" to distinguish from the more prominent club Fossum IF in Bærum.

The Agder Court of Appeal (Norwegian: Agder lagmannsrett) is one of six courts of appeal in the Kingdom of Norway. The Court is located in the town of Skien. The court has jurisdiction over the counties of Vestfold og Telemark and Agder (except for Sirdal Municipality which falls under the Gulating Court of Appeal). These areas constitute the Agder judicial district (Norwegian: Agder lagdømme). This court can rule on both civil and criminal cases that are appealed from one of its subordinate district courts. Court decisions can be, to a limited extent, appealed to the Supreme Court of Norway. The court has 21 judges and 13 administrative staff, including a director. The chief judicial officer of the court (Norwegian: førstelagmann) is currently Dag Bugge Norden. The court is administered by the Norwegian National Courts Administration.

Telemark District Court (Norwegian: Telemark tingrett) is a district court located in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. This court is based at three different courthouses which are located in Skien, Notodden, and Kviteseid. The court serves the western part of the county which includes 17 municipalities. The court in Skien accepts cases from the municipalities of Bamble, Drangedal, Kragerø, Nome, Porsgrunn, Siljan, and Skien. The court in Kviteseid accepts cases from the municipalities of Fyresdal, Kviteseid, Nissedal, Tokke, Seljord, and Vinje. The court in Notodden accepts cases from the municipalities of Hjartdal, Notodden, Tinn, and Midt-Telemark. The court is subordinate to the Agder Court of Appeal.The court is led by a chief judge (sorenskriver) and several other judges. The court is a court of first instance. Its judicial duties are mainly to settle criminal cases and to resolve civil litigation as well as bankruptcy. The administration and registration tasks of the court include death registration, issuing certain certificates, performing duties of a notary public, and officiating civil wedding ceremonies. Cases from this court are heard by a combination of professional judges and lay judges.

Skien Airport, Geiteryggen (Norwegian: Skien lufthavn, Geiteryggen; IATA: SKE, ICAO: ENSN) is a regional airport located at Geiteryggen, 5.5 kilometers (3.4 mi) southwest of the city center of Skien, Norway. Owned by Skien Municipality, it was last served by Widerøe with daily flights to Bergen. The runway is 1,416-by-30-meter (4,646 ft × 98 ft) and numbered 01–19. The airport had 33,080 passengers in 2014 and has Grenland and the southern part of Telemark as its catchment area. The airport was built with a 650-meter (2,130 ft) gravel runway in 1952. Fjellfly was the first airline based at the airport, which from 1963 to 1972 flew scheduled services to Oslo. An extension of the runway to 1,050 meters (3,440 ft) was carried out in 1970s. Norving had a base at Geiteryggen from 1976, which was taken over by Norsk Air in 1988. A major upgrade, including expanding the runway to the current length and building the current terminal, took place in the mid-1980s. Norsk Air withdrew in 1993, resulting in several airlines flying from the airport; Coast Aero Center, Teddy Air, Coast Air, Air Stord and Sun Air of Scandinavia all operated various services during the late 1980s and 1990s. The airport closed in 2002, but was reopened in 2004 when Vildanden was established. It gradually introduced four domestic and international services before folding in 2011.

Hakastein Church was a church under Gimsøy Abbey near Skien in Norway. It is first referred to in a manuscript from 1354.In 2001, archaeologists uncovered post-holes and other features which are believed to belong to the church. Radiocarbon dating of material from the post-holes suggest that the church was constructed between 1010 and 1040, making it one of Norway's earliest post churches. Earlier features on the site, such as graves, were dated to the mid 10th century.

Åfoss is a village in Skien Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The village is located near the outlet of the lake Norsjø, just across the river from the village of Skotfoss. The village is located about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the west of the town of Skien and about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the north of the village of Klovholt.

Skien Station (Norwegian: Skien stasjon) is a railway station located about one kilometer from downtown Skien in Vestfold og Telemark, Norway.The station serves as terminus for the regional trains on the Vestfold Line (Vestfoldbanen) from Oslo via Vestfold and for the local trains to Notodden on the Bratsberg Line. The station was opened in 1917 as part of the Bratsberg Line. Skien Station was built following designs by Gudmund Hoel with Bjarne Friis Baastad and Ragnvald Utne. Following protest, the old Skien station (Skien gamle stasjon), which was located two kilometers further south, remained in operation from 1927 until 1963.

Telemark Hospital Trust is a health trust with its headquarters in Skien. There are also sections in Porsgrunn and Kragerø. The total employees in 2003 were 2750, of which 215 were doctors. It is owned by Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority.
