Caohagan Island

Nalusuan is a natural island resort in the Cebu Strait, the Philippines, and one of the islands comprising the Olango Island Group. The island, which measures close to a hectare, is situated between Mactan Island and the Province of Bohol. Originally a sand bar, it was reclaimed to allow the construction of the Nalusuan Island Resort, which occupies the entire island. The island was originally and locally known as "kalusuan" meaning "a place of penises" in Cebuano. The local fishermen named it as such because the waters surrounding the island is teeming with sea cucumbers, which looked like the male genitalia. The island is administratively within the jurisdiction of the town of Cordova and specifically in the barangay of Gilutongan. On May 18, 2009, American swimmer Paul Vanhoven swam unassisted from Mactan Island to Nalusuan in an effort to raise awareness of the damage that dynamite fisherman were causing to local reefs. Management of the Nalusuan Marine Sanctuary have long been trying to protect the local waters from dynamite blasts and over-fishing. Fish populations have rebounded back to healthy levels at the Sanctuary, and large grouper are becoming a common site again. In May 2009, a small nurse shark was sighted at the island, as more top predators return.

Gilutongan is one of the islands comprising the Olango Island Group, a group of islands in between Mactan and the Danajon Bank in the Philippines. Most of the Olango islands are part of Lapu-Lapu City, Gilutongan, however, is under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Cordova, Cebu. The island is approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) southeast from the town of Cordova. The population of Gilutongan is 1,606. The island is one of the destinations of island-hopping tours because the island has white-sand beaches and a marine sanctuary, where tourists can do snorkeling and underwater diving activities. The island is locally administered by Barangay Gilutongan. The nearby uninhabited Nalusuan Island is also part of the territory of the barangay. Gilutongan has one public school, Gilutongan Integrated School. In December 2021, Typhoon Rai or Supertyphoon Odette has damaged 85% of the houses in Gilutongan and most of the residents' boats were wrecked. Relief assistance was provided to the affected families on the island by the local government, civil society organizations, and the Philippine Navy.

Hilutangan Channel (or Gilutungan Channel) is a deep water channel that separates Mactan Island from Olango Island. The Mactan Reef Flat lies on the port (left) side of this channel and the Olango Reef Flat lies on the starboard (right) side of this channel. It is one of the three channels that connect the Cebu Strait to the Camotes Sea: the Mactan Channel (which separates Cebu from Mactan) the Hilutangan Channel (which separates Mactan from Olango) the Olango Channel (which separates Olango from Bohol). The holotype of the sea snail Tosapusia sauternesensis was described in the channel.

The Olango Island Group is a group of islands found in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. It comprises Olango island and 6 satellite islets namely: Caubian, Camungi, Caohagan, Gilutongan, Nalusuan, Pangan-an, and Sulpa. The island group has a total land area of approximately 1,030 hectares (2,500 acres). It is divided under the jurisdiction of the city of Lapu-Lapu and the municipality of Cordova, Cebu. It lies 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) east of Mactan and is a major tourist destination in Cebu. It is known for its wildlife sanctuary. The entire area is the first declared Ramsar Wetland Site in the Philippines, as recognized in 1994.

Cordova, officially the Municipality of Cordova (Cebuano: Lungsod sa Cordova; Tagalog: Bayan ng Cordova), is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 70,595 people.Also spelled Cordoba, most of the municipality lies on separate islands off the southern coast of Mactan Island. It is connected by two bridges to the main island of Mactan, which itself is connected to mainland Cebu by the two bridges between Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu City. The Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway, opened in 2022, connects it directly to mainland Cebu in Cebu City.Cordova is bordered to the north by Lapu-Lapu City, to the west by the Mactan Channel, to the east by the Hilutangan Channel and Olango Island, and to the south by the Cebu Strait. Cordova is a part of Metro Cebu.

Mactan Island Aquarium is a public aquarium in Lapu-Lapu, Cebu. The aquarium museum has been open since October 2008 and has over 30 exhibits showcasing Cebu's aquatic life from snakes to sharks. The aquarium has recently completed a transfer from Barangay Basak to Barangay Maribago, still on Mactan Island. The new larger site is between White Sands Resort and EGI City by the Sea Condos.

Korean Air Flight 631 (KE631/KAL631) was a scheduled passenger flight from Incheon International Airport near Seoul, South Korea to Mactan–Cebu International Airport in Metro Cebu, Philippines. On October 23, 2022, the Airbus A330-300 operating this flight overran the runway while landing in Cebu due to hydraulic failure. Despite what reports described as a "terrifying close call," all passengers and crew members survived without injuries. However, the aircraft was damaged beyond repair and written off as a result of the accident, making it the 14th hull loss of an Airbus A330.The crash is the 17th Korean Air crash since 1970 that resulted in a total write off of aircraft and the first in 23 years.
