The Hôpital-Général de Douai was set up in 1752 in the French city of Douai. The hospital is an important healthcare establishment in the Douaisis area . It carries out its public hospital service missions covering 64 municipalities with a population of nearly 260,000 inhabitants. It has a capacity of 874 beds and 50,000 people get treatment at the hospital every year. It is also a major employer in the region, employing 2,300 people.

Its population was 148,784 in 2019, of which 39,613 in Douai proper.

The University of Douai (French: Université de Douai) (Dutch: Universiteit van Dowaai) was a former university in Douai, France. With a medieval heritage of scholarly activities in Douai, the university was established in 1559 and lectures started in 1562. It closed from 1795 to 1808. In 1887, it was transferred as University of Lille 27 km away from Douai. From the mid-16th century onwards, the university of Douai had Europe-wide influence as a prominent centre of neo-Latin literature, contributing also to the dissemination of printed knowledge. With 1,500 to 2,000 registered students and several hundred professors, it was the second largest university of France during the late-17th and 18th centuries. Studies in mathematics and physics at the Douai Faculty of Arts enabled broad development in artillery practice. The Douai Faculty of Theology was an important center for Catholic scholarship. It played a role in religious doctrines and political controversies in Europe; its scholars participated in the development of new approaches to the humanities.

The Bibliothèque municipale de Douai, now Bibliothèque Marceline Desbordes-Valmore (after the Douai-born poet Marceline Desbordes-Valmore) is a library in Douai, France. Founded in 1767, it was bombed on August 11, 1944. The library reopened in 1955, in a new building designed by the architect Maurice Coasnes.The special collections ("réserve patrimoniale") include 607 medieval manuscripts (many of which were confiscated at the suppression of Anchin Abbey and Marchiennes Abbey during the French Revolution), over 300 incunables, a considerable number of works printed in Douai on hand-operated presses from 1569 onwards, and the literary remains (letters and manuscripts) of Marceline Desbordes-Valmore (1786-1859).

IMT Nord Europe or École nationale supérieure Mines-Télécom Lille Douai is a French graduate school of engineering (grande école d'ingénieurs). It is located in the Hauts-de-France region, shared between 2 campuses: the science campus (cité scientifique) of the University of Lille (Villeneuve-d'Ascq, European Metropolis of Lille); and the city of Douai. It is accredited by the Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur (CTI) to deliver the French Diplôme d'Ingénieur. The school trains high-level engineers and scientists (Master and PhD level) in various technological fields. A small number of students are accepted each year, after a very selective exam. It is a crucial part of the infrastructure of French industry. It is affiliated to University of Lille and Institut Mines-Télécom (Mines-Télécom Institut of Technology - IMT). The École des Mines de Douai merged with TELECOM Lille in 2017 to become the largest engineering school in France north of Paris under the name IMT Lille Douai, then IMT Nord Europe.
