Place du Portage

The Palais des congrès de Gatineau is a conference centre in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. It was opened in 1981 beside the Gatineau City Hall near Place du Portage, home to a large number of Government of Canada offices. It was privately owned but leased on a long-term basis to, and managed by, the City of Gatineau. It lost money every year since opening until 2007 when the city broke the lease and management of the centre was taken over by the Government of Quebec.It was announced in June 2009 that the centre would receive up to CAD$15,000,000 for renovations, a joint investment by the federal and provincial governments as was part of the federal government's infrastructure investment program to stimulate the economy after the market down-turn of 2008. The renovations were successfully completed by January 2011 at a cost of approximately CAD$15,300,000. The building now features 16 columnless meeting rooms, up-to-date technical services and on-site catering. It was the site of the 1995 Progressive Conservative leadership convention.

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO; French: Office de la propriété intellectuelle du Canada, OPIC) is responsible for the administration and processing of the greater part of intellectual property (IP) in Canada. CIPO's areas of activity include patents, trademarks, copyright, industrial designs and integrated circuit topographies. Structurally, CIPO functions as a special operating agency (SOA) under Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. CIPO is based in Gatineau, Quebec, part of the National Capital Region. CIPO’s current interim Chief Executive Officer is Konstantinos Georgaras.CIPO plays an integral role in the Canadian innovation ecosystem and cooperates with its counterpart organizations around the world through international IP treaties. Continued collaboration with international partners and domestic stakeholders strengths the Canadian IP regime and provides CIPO’s clients with opportunities to extract greater value from their creations and inventions. In 2019, Canada ratified and fully implemented the Hague Agreement for industrial designs; the Madrid Protocol, the Singapore Treaty and the Nice Agreement for trademarks; and the Patent Law Treaty for patents. Prior to 2019, Canada had joined the TRIPS Agreement and the Paris Convention for intellectual property; the WIPO Convention for trademarks and copyright; the Berne Convention, the Rome Convention and the Marrakesh VIP Treaty for copyright; and the Budapest Treaty, the Patent Cooperation Treaty, the Strasbourg Agreement and the UPOV Convention for patents.In 2020, CIPO received approximately 160,000 applications to register more than 37,000 patents, 76,000 trademarks, 12,500 copyrights and 8,000 industrial designs.

Hull is the central business district and oldest neighbourhood of the city of Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. It is located on the west bank of the Gatineau River and the north shore of the Ottawa River, directly opposite Ottawa. As part of the Canadian National Capital Region, it contains offices for over 20,000 civil servants. It is named after Kingston upon Hull in England.

The Maison du Citoyen (English: Citizen's House; unofficial) is the city hall of Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. Located in the city's central business district of Hull, it was previously the City of Hull's city hall until it was amalgamated into the City of Gatineau alongside the neighbouring municipalities of Aylmer, Buckingham and Masson-Angers.

The Portage Bridge (French: Pont du Portage) crosses the Ottawa River just down-river from the Chaudière Bridge, joining the communities of Gatineau, Quebec and Ottawa, Ontario. It links Laurier Street and Alexandre-Taché Boulevard in the Hull sector of Gatineau and Wellington Street at the Garden of the Provinces and Territories in Ottawa, crossing Victoria Island and the former Philemon Island on the way. The bridge was built by the National Capital Commission in 1973 and expanded in 1988. The bridge is named after the historic Portage Trail around the Chaudière Falls and Rapids which ended near the present location of the bridge.

Estrie Language School/ Estrie International Language School (l’École de langues de l’Estrie) was a language school based in Gatineau, Quebec, at 115 Champlain Road. It was situated near the Palais des congrès de Gatineau and the Place du Portage. It also had classrooms at 200 Elgin Street in Ottawa. The school offered language classes in English and in French. The school’s clients were international students who primarily came from South Korea, Japan, Colombia, and Saudi Arabia. The school also had contracts with the Government of Canada to teach English and French to Canadian government employees. Estrie Language School was owned by Louise Charest who founded it in 1986. Louise Charest is the sister of former Quebec premier Jean Charest. It closed on January 23, 2014 due to bankruptcy.

Victoria Island (French: Île Victoria, Algonquin: Asinabka) is an island in the Ottawa River, located north of LeBreton Flats, 1 km west of Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The island is "a place of special significance" to the local Algonquian peoples, who use the island for ceremonial purposes and for protests. It is part of an archipelago of islands below Chaudière Falls, which also includes the former Philemon Island, Chaudière Island, Amelia Island and Albert Island.Both the Portage Bridge and Chaudière Bridge cross the island, connecting Ottawa to Gatineau, Quebec on the other side of the river. Otherwise, public access to the island is currently restricted due to an environmental remediation project set to be completed in 2025. The project is projected to cost $13 million.

The Hull-Ottawa fire of 1900 was a devastating fire in 1900 that destroyed much of Hull, Quebec, and large portions of Ottawa, Ontario.

The Royal Canadian Navy Monument is a small memorial park located at Richmond Landing, next to the Ottawa River in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It commemorates the men and women who have served or are currently serving in the Royal Canadian Navy. The monument was designed by artist Al McWilliams and architects Joost Bakker and Bruce Haden, and was officially opened by then Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, on 3 May 2012.

The Canadian Children's Museum (CCM) is a children's museum and exhibition operated by the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. The CCM attracts about half a million visitors each year. It is also Canada's largest exhibition centre (3,000 m2 (32,000 sq ft)) designed specifically for children up to age 14 and their adult companions.

The Canadian Postal Museum (CPM) was a museum once housed within the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec. It was described by the Smithsonian Museum as being one of the five largest postal museums in the world, ranking second in annual attendance. The museum was not primarily about postage stamps, although it has a first-class collection that numbered in the tens of thousands. Rather, it presented the broader story of Canada's postal heritage, including the social and economic importance of postal communications throughout the country's history. It also explored international themes relating to postal communications.

The Canadian Museum of History (French: Musée canadien de l’histoire) is a national museum on anthropology, Canadian history, cultural studies, and ethnology in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. The purpose of the museum is to promote the heritage of Canada, as well as support related research. The museum is based in a 75,000-square-metre-building (810,000 sq ft) designed by Douglas Cardinal. The museum originated from a museum established by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1856, which later expanded to include an anthropology division in 1910. In 1927, the institution was renamed the National Museum of Canada. The national museum was later split into several separate institutions in 1968, with the anthropology and human history departments forming the National Museum of Man. The museum relocated to its present location in Gatineau in 1989 and adopted the name Canadian Museum of Civilization the following year. In 2013, the museum adopted its current name, the Canadian Museum of History, and modified its mandate to emphasize Canadian identity and history. The museum's collection contains over three million artifacts and documents, with some on display in the museum's permanent exhibitions. The museum also hosts and organizes a number of temporary, travelling, and online exhibitions, like the Virtual Museum of New France.
