Ravensrodd (Parliament of England constituency)

Ravenser Odd, also spelled Ravensrodd, was a port in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, during the medieval period, built on the sandbanks at the mouth of the Humber estuary. The name Ravenser comes from the Old Norse Hrafn's Eyr or 'Raven's Ear' referring to the lost sandbank promontory, the modern successor of which is now known as Spurn Point. The town was founded by the Count of Aumale in the mid-13th century, and had more than 100 houses and a flourishing market by 1 April 1299, when it was granted a borough charter. The town had wharves, warehouses, a court and a prison. It collected dues from more than 100 merchant ships a year. In the 13th century the town was a more important port than Kingston upon Hull further up the Humber, and sent two members to the Model Parliament of 1295. As the sandbanks shifted the town was swept away. The king granted them quayage, providing them funds to repair their damaged quay, in 1329, 1333, 1335, 1340, 1344, and 1347. An inquisition held in 1346 determined ongoing flood damage was so severe that only 1/3 of the townsfolk remained. Storms over the winter of 1356–57 completely flooded the town, leading to its abandonment, and it was largely destroyed by the Grote Mandrenke storm or Saint Marcellus's flood of January 1362. The site is now completely underwater. In 2022 the site was being searched for off Spurn Point, with hope that the foundations of the seawall and harbour would still remain.

Ravenspurn was a town in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, which was lost due to coastal erosion, one of more than 30 along the Holderness Coast which have been lost to the North Sea since the 19th century. The town was located close to the end of a peninsula near Ravenser Odd, which had been flooded in the 14th century. The peninsula still survives and is known as Spurn Head. The North Sea lies to the east of the peninsula, the Humber estuary to the west. The nearest major city was Kingston upon Hull. The region of coastline is known as the Holderness Coast; geologically the land is formed of glacial tills (boulder clay), which are subject to coastal erosion. Now at sea, areas around the site are being drilled for natural gas. Ravenspurn appears in William Shakespeare's plays Richard II, Henry IV, Part 1, and Henry VI, Part 3, under the spelling "Ravenspurgh". Two medieval English kings landed at Ravenspurn: Henry IV in 1399, on his way to dethrone Richard II, and Edward IV in 1471, on his way back from exile in the Netherlands, where he was resisted by the local lord, Sir Martin de la See.

The Spurn Point military railway was a railway line in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It extended for 3+3⁄4 miles (6 km), connecting Kilnsea with Spurn Point in the Humber Estuary. The line was built to supply military installations along this stretch of coast. Spurn Point is a narrow spit of land which protrudes south and south-westwards from the eastern edge of Yorkshire into the Humber Estuary. It is shifting and unstable, being mostly composed of sand and shingle.

The Church of St Helen, Kilnsea, Holderness, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, is a redundant parish church dating from 1864–5. It was designed by the architect William Burges, and partly paid for by his father Alfred Burges, and is a Grade II listed building.

Kilnsea is a village in the civil parish of Easington, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3 km) south of the village of Easington, on the north bank of the Humber Estuary. In 1931 the parish had a population of 185. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Easington. East of Kilnsea is the Grade II listed First World War concrete acoustic mirror used as an early warning device. Kilnsea has one public house, the Crown and Anchor. In 1823 Kilnsea was a civil parish in the Wapentake and Liberty of Holderness. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Helen, was close to the cliff and in a "state of dilapidation" and "dangerous condition". Repairs were considered useless with the expectation that the sea, which had already swept away the graveyard, would take the church "in a short time". Population in 1823 was 196. The old St Helen's Church was lost to the sea in 1826, and was replaced by a new church in 1865, at a cost of £420, that incorporated some salvaged remains of the old building. The church was listed as a Grade II building on 14 December 2018.

Spurn is a narrow sand tidal island located off the tip of the coast of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England that reaches into the North Sea and forms the north bank of the mouth of the Humber Estuary. It was a spit with a semi-permanent connection to the mainland, but a storm in 2013 made the road down to the end of Spurn impassable to vehicles at high tide. The island is over three miles (five kilometres) long, almost half the width of the estuary at that point, and as little as 50 yards (45 metres) wide in places. The southernmost tip is known as Spurn Head or Spurn Point and was, until early 2023, the home to an RNLI lifeboat station and two disused lighthouses. It forms part of the civil parish of Easington. Spurn Head covers 280 acres (113 hectares) above high water and 450 acres (181 hectares) of foreshore. It has been owned since 1960 by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and is a designated national nature reserve, heritage coast and is part of the Humber Flats, Marshes and Coast Special Protection Area.

Easington Lifeboat Station was located at the end of Seaside Road, south-east of Easington, a village sitting in the south-east corner of the area of land between the Humber estuary and the North Sea known as Holderness, in the East Riding of Yorkshire. A lifeboat station was established here in 1913 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), replacing the station at Withernsea. After just 20 years in operation, Easington Lifeboat Station closed in 1933.

The Humber is a large tidal estuary on the east coast of Northern England. It is formed at Trent Falls, Faxfleet, by the confluence of the tidal rivers Ouse and Trent. From there to the North Sea, it forms part of the boundary between the East Riding of Yorkshire on the north bank and North Lincolnshire on the south bank. Although the Humber is an estuary from the point at which it is formed, many maps show it as the River Humber.Below Trent Falls, the Humber passes the junction with the Market Weighton Canal on the north shore, the confluence of the River Ancholme on the south shore; between North Ferriby and South Ferriby and under the Humber Bridge; between Barton-upon-Humber on the south bank and Kingston upon Hull on the north bank (where the River Hull joins), then meets the North Sea between Cleethorpes on the Lincolnshire side and the long and thin headland of Spurn Head to the north. Ports on the Humber include the Port of Hull, the Port of Grimsby and the Port of Immingham; there are lesser ports at New Holland and North Killingholme Haven. The estuary is navigable for the largest of deep-sea vessels. Inland connections for smaller craft are extensive but handle only a quarter of the goods traffic handled in the Thames.

Easington is a small village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in the area known as Holderness. A coastal settlement, it is situated between the Humber estuary and the North Sea at the south-eastern corner of the county, and at the end of the B1445 road from Patrington. The coastal town of Withernsea is approximately 6 miles (10 km) to the north-west. The civil parish is formed by the village of Easington and the hamlets of Kilnsea, Out Newton and Spurn Head. Bull Sand Fort is administered as part of the parish. According to the 2011 UK Census, Easington parish had a population of 691, a small decrease on the 2001 UK Census figure of 698. The parish church of All Saints' is a Grade I listed building. In 1823 the ecclesiastical parish incumbency was a perpetual curacy under the patronage of the Archbishop of York. The parish had a population of 488, with occupations that included a butcher, a corn miller, a weaver, two blacksmiths, two wheelwrights, two grocers, three shoemakers, four tailors, twelve farmers, two schoolmasters, a land surveyor, a yeoman, and the landlord of the Granby's Head public house. There were two carriers who operated between the village and Hull weekly. Many years ago, the parish of Easington included Turmarr, Hoton, Northorpe, Dimlington, Old Kilnsea and Ravenser. These villages have been lost to the ever-encroaching sea, and some had disappeared as early as 1400. The thatched tithe barn is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II* listed building, having been designated in 1987. Easington is significant for being the birthplace of the Anglo-Canadian poet and literary scholar, Robin Skelton (1925–97).

Skeffling is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 5 miles (8 km) south of the town of Withernsea and 4 miles (6.4 km) south-east of the village of Patrington on the B1445 road from Patrington to Easington. According to the 2011 UK census, Skeffling parish had a population of 149, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 153. The parish church of St Helen is a Grade I listed building that is situated to the south of the village. It is constructed of cobble with stone dressings and was built in the 1460s.

Out Newton is a hamlet in the civil parish of Easington, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated just inland from the North Sea coast, approximately 4.5 miles (7.2 km) south-east of Withernsea, and 4.5 miles (7.2 km) east of Patrington. Out Newton was formerly a township in the parish of Easington, in 1866 Out Newton became a separate civil parish, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Burton Constable. In 1931 the parish had a population of 31. The hamlet was mentioned in the Domesday Book as having six ploughlands, 20 acres (8.1 ha) of meadowland and four villagers. The name is believed to stem from Outer Newton, with Newton itself meaning new homestead or village. It was formerly in the wapentake of Holderness. A seven turbine wind farm, capable of generating 9 MW of electricity and operated by RWE, is situated on the coast near to the settlement.

Birstall Priory or Burstall Priory was a priory in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The priory was built around 1219 and continuing as an inhabited religious house until the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1541. Burstall Bank and Burstall Lane are still in existence near the north bank of the Humber Estuary, south of Skeffling, but Birstall Priory itself has long since been given up to the sea.
