Dowsborough

Dead Woman's Ditch is an earthwork which has been scheduled as an ancient monument in Over Stowey, Somerset, England situated on the Quantock Hills. A linear earthwork consisting of a bank with a ditch along the west side running for approximately 950 metres (3,120 ft) from a spring known as Lady's Fountain across Robin Uprights Hill and down into Ramscombe. The earthwork is presumed to be of prehistoric origin and is of unknown purpose, but has been linked to Dowsborough. The 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) long earthwork has been cut through by later tracks and a road. It is badly eroded in places and is on the Heritage at Risk Register. Part of the earthwork is on land owned by the Forestry Commission. Dead Woman's Ditch is sometimes associated with the murder of Jane Walford by her husband John in 1789 but the name predates the murder, appearing on an earlier map. In 1988 the body of Shirley Banks was found 1 mile from the site; John Cannan was found guilty of her murder.

Holford is a village and civil parish in Somerset within the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is located about 10 miles (16 km) west of Bridgwater and 6 miles (10 km) east of Williton, with a population of 392. The village is on the Quantock Greenway and Coleridge Way footpaths. The parish includes the village of Dodington. The River Holford, which runs through the village, flows to the sea at Kilve.

Dodington Hall in Dodington, within the English county of Somerset, was built in the 15th century. It is a Grade II* listed building. The house is built of local red sandstone and has a slate roof with several tall chimney stacks. In the open hall is a decorated ceiling, with another in the parlour wing which also contains heraldic glass which has survived from the original construction in 1485. The manor house was expanded in 1581, but then fell into disrepair and was let as a farmhouse during the 17th century. It contains the mechanism of a water driven spit in the cellar below the kitchen.

All Saints Church at Dodington in the parish of Holford, Somerset, England was rebuilt and enlarged in the 15th century. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building. The nave was refenestrated and re-roofed in the 16th century, and the chancel refenestrated early in the 17th century, having been previously rebuilt in the 15th century. A chapel was added in 1610, and the upper stage of the tower added in 1772. New pews were added in 1874 and further restoration, including the building of the lych gate took place after World War I. The tower had four bells in 1933 but they are no longer rung. In the church is a memorial to Admiral Sir Edward Codrington.

Alfoxton House, also known as Alfoxton Park or Alfoxden, is an 18th-century country house in Holford, Somerset, England, within the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The present house was rebuilt in 1710 after the previous building was destroyed in a fire.

Ge-mare Farm Fields (grid reference ST155424) is a 4.1 hectare (10.3 acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Holford on the Quantock Hills in Somerset, notified in 1988. The site consists of an unimproved species-rich flood pasture community with interest enhanced by the presence of a wetter area supporting a lowland mire community. These habitats are rare both nationally and within the county of Somerset.

The Quantock Hills west of Bridgwater in Somerset, England, consist of heathland, oak woodlands, ancient parklands and agricultural land. They were England's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1956. Natural England have designated the Quantock Hills as a national character area. They are entirely surrounded by another: the Vale of Taunton and Quantock Fringes. The hills run from the Vale of Taunton Deane in the south, for about 15 miles (24 km) to the north-west, ending at Kilve and West Quantoxhead on the coast of the Bristol Channel. They form the western border of Sedgemoor and the Somerset Levels. From the top of the hills on a clear day, it is possible to see Glastonbury Tor and the Mendips to the east, Wales as far as the Gower Peninsula to the north, the Brendon Hills and Exmoor to the west, and the Blackdown Hills to the south. The highest point on the Quantocks is Wills Neck, at 1,261 feet (384 m). Soil types and weather combine to support the hills' plants and animals. In 1970, an area of 6,194.5 acres (2,506.8 ha) was designated as a Biological Site of Special Scientific Interest. Archaeological landscape features include Bronze Age round barrows, extensive ancient field systems and Iron Age hill forts. Roman silver coins have been discovered in West Bagborough. The hills are popular with walkers, mountain bikers, horse riders and tourists who explore paths such as the Coleridge Way.

Crowcombe is a village and civil parish under the Quantock Hills in Somerset, England, 5.5 miles (9 km) southeast of Watchet, and 8 miles (13 km) from Taunton. The village has a population of 489. The parish covers the hamlets of Crowcombe Heathfield, Flaxpool, Halsway, Lawford and Triscombe. The village is on the route of the Samaritans Way South West.

Adscombe Chapel is the remains of a medieval chapel, located 280 metres (920 ft) east of Adscombe Farm in Somerset, UK, situated on the north-west facing slope of a prominent ridge. This 13th Century chapel of the Virgin Mary was built at Adscombe by the monks of Athelney Abbey. In 1535 Johan Broke of Over Stowey bequeathed one sheep to 'Our Lady of Addescombe' — this is the earliest official record of this chapel. A high, gable-end wall to roof height, with a high window with a door beneath, were still standing in 1903, however now only small sections remain. Enough remains to show it was a single roomed building of 16 metres (52 ft) by 7 metres (23 ft). The surviving walls, which are up to 0.6 metres (2 ft) thick, remain standing up to a height of 1.3 metres (4 ft). Within the limited remains there is door mouldings and sections of window. The chapel is on a terraced area of approximately 25 metres (82 ft) by 15 metres (49 ft). The Chapel was built of local Devonian sandstone and the bases of substantial buttresses can be seen at the west end. The west window was framed in a simple carved stone surround. The chapel probably dates from the middle of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century. Adscombe currently is a small hamlet with an old farmhouse and a few 'cottages' along the lane opposite the chapel. Adscombe is located roughly 135 miles (217 km) west of London, and 45 miles (72 km) south-west of Bristol. The chapel's location is typical of many settlements in the Quantock Hills, at the foot of a combe and bordering former common land. The Quantock Hills are one of a few remaining expanses of open moorland in southern Britain. This area has archeological importance due to many monuments highlighting the exploitation of the land in the Bronze Age and Iron Age, including round barrows, cairns, settlements and hillforts. Adscombe was a settlement in the medieval period; in 1327 four people from Adscombe were wealthy enough to be assessed for tax and in 1547 it had two houses and a ruined tenement. To the east of the chapel is a large earthwork platform the site of a substantial building. In the medieval period, it was probably the manor house of Over Stowey and Fryon (now known as Friarn). The house was called 'Chapel House' and was the home of the Rich family in the 17th century. By the 19th century, it was known as 'Chapples House and Barton' and the chapel was used as a barn. Recent conservation works to the monument have been funded through DEFRA's Countryside Stewardship Scheme.

Crowcombe Court in Crowcombe, Somerset, England is a large country house dating from 1724 to 1739. It is Grade I listed. It was built, in English regional baroque style, by Thomas Parker, for Thomas Carew, and finished by Nathaniel Ireson of Wincanton, after Carew found that Parker had taken old coins, found while demolishing the old house. Minor alterations were carried out by Edward Middleton Barry around 1870. The house has terracotta coloured bricks complemented by Bath stone pilasters and frontispiece. The interior includes plasterwork by Grinling Gibbons. The house was described by Nikolaus Pevsner as "the finest house of its date in Somerset south of the Bath area". Brympton School, previously at Brympton d'Evercy, occupied Crowcombe Court between 1974 and 1976. It has also been used as a nursing home. The previous owners of the house David and Kate Kenyon purchased the property in 2011. Kate is a direct descendant of James Morrison. The gardens and parkland are listed, Grade II, on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England. As of 2019, Crowcombe Court is owned by The Gilchrist Collection and is used as a Wedding Venue.

Kilve is a village in Somerset, England, within the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the first AONB to be established, in 1957. It lies on the A39 almost exactly equidistant from Bridgwater to the east and Minehead to the west. The village includes a 17th-century coaching inn, and a post office and stores. This part of the village, formerly known as Putsham, also contains the village hall, which was extended to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Not far away is Doniford a settlement near the harbour town of Watchet.

Church Of St Peter And St Paul in Over Stowey, Somerset, England, is the Anglican parish church for the ancient parish of Over Stowey, now part of the Quantock Villages Benefice in the Diocese of Bath and Wells. The tower and part of the nave date from the 14th century. There is also 15th century work but the building was heavily restored and enlarged by Richard Carver (architect) in the 19th century. There are some fine carved oak bench ends typical of the area and an unusual monument to the brothers Rich (died 1813 and 1815) depicting agricultural implements and a beehive. Several windows are by Morris & Co including two which are designed by Edward Burne-Jones. One depicts the Angel of the Resurrection and the other a band of angelic musicians. Two of the six bells in the tower are medieval, from Exeter and one dated 1714. Many of the monuments inside and outside the church are to members of the Labouchere and later Stanley family who built and occupied Quantock Lodge, owned much of the parish and funded the church restoration. A large granite cross in the churchyard is a memorial to Henry Stanley, cricketer and heir to the Quantock Lodge Estate who was killed in the Boer War. The diarist William Holland was the vicar of Over Stowey from 1779 until his death in 1819. In 2000 the church was featured on the Royal Mail's First Class Christmas Stamp
