Named after Ngāti Pāoa chief Te Haupa, the island was traditionally used as a seasonal base for shark fishing. The island first became a reserve in 1951.

Puhoi is to the west, Mahurangi Harbour is to the east, and the western part of Mahurangi Regional Park is southeast.Mahurangi Heads West School operated from 1886 to 1946. It was a half-time school for the early part of this period, sharing its teacher with another school. The school building is now Mahurangi West Hall.

The Mahurangi River in northern New Zealand flows through the town of Warkworth and into Mahurangi Harbour, which opens into the outer Hauraki Gulf. The Left Branch of the river rises in the Dome and flows through the Dome Valley, while the Right Branch rises on Moir Hill. The lower part is a tidal estuary that ranges in depth from below approximately 50 centimetres (20 inches) at the channel entrance to approximately 150 centimetres (59 inches) further upstream. The Mahurangi Harbour provides a sheltered anchorage for private pleasure craft in all weathers.

Couldrey House is a mid-19th century historic homestead located in the Wenderholm Regional Park. Couldrey House was originally built and owned by Robert Graham. The house has hosted many notable individuals including Queen Elizabeth II. In the 1980s the house was opened to the public and it currently functions as a museum.

Scandrett Regional Park is a regional park located on the north east tip of the Mahurangi Peninsula, north of the city of Auckland, New Zealand. It encompasses Mullet Point and includes regenerating coastal forest, rocky headlands that protrude into Kawau Bay, Scandretts Bay beach and a precinct of historic farm buildings. The people of Auckland own the park through the Auckland Council.
