Coppergate is a street in the city centre of York, in England. The street runs north-east from the junction of Castlegate, Nessgate, King Street and Clifford Street, to end at the junction of Pavement, Piccadilly, Parliament Street and High Ousegate.

Coppergate Shopping Centre is a shopping centre in York in North Yorkshire, England. It is named after Coppergate, one of York's medieval streets ("gate" coming from the Old Norse gata, or street).

The Blue Boar is a pub on Castlegate in the city centre of York, in England. The Blue Boar was a Mediaeval inn on the street. Among its guests were Roger Cottam, envoy to Henry VII of England, and many Royalist soldiers preparing for the Siege of York. It was demolished in about 1730 and replaced by the current building, along with the neighbouring 1 and 3 Castlegate. A tradition states that the body of Dick Turpin was kept in the cellar of the pub overnight, after his execution, and that the landlord of the pub allowed patrons to see the body, for a small fee. An additional tradition claims that Turpin's ghost haunts the pub. In 1770, the Robin Hood pub opened on the street, probably as a direct replacement for the Blue Boar, although it is not certain whether it occupied the same building. It became an important coaching inn, with coaches running daily to Hull and Leeds, and from 1816 also to Selby, along with less regular routes to Richmond, Barnard Castle, Howden and Bubwith. In Walter Scott's novel, The Heart of Midlothian, the Seven Stars pub is thought to be based on the Robin Hood. The front of the pub was rebuilt in 1851, including a carriage arch leading to former stables at the rear, and the pub was extended into part of 3 Castlegate. In about 1894, the pub was again renamed, as the Little John. It has since been internally rebuilt, and an extension added. In 1971, it was Grade II listed, along with the attached cast iron carriage gates. In the early 21st century, the pub was owned by Enterprise Inns and described itself as being "gay-friendly". It closed in 2011, but reopened the following year, returning to the Blue Boar name.

26 Coppergate is a historic building in the city centre of York, in England. The front part of the building dates from the late 15th century, and is a timber framed structure, three storeys high and two bays wide. The rear part of the building is built of brick, and was added in the 17th century. The building was altered in the 18th century, and altered and extended in the 19th century. Around the middle of that century, it became the Market Tavern pub. In 1954, the building was Grade II* listed. The pub closed in the second half of the 20th century, following which, the building was renovated. From 1986, it operated as the restaurant Russell's of Coppergate. In 2021, it became an Italian restaurant, Vitoria.Both storeys at the front of the building are jettied. The rear part of the building is slightly longer than the front part, and it includes a cellar. In the cellar is the bottom part of a historic spiral staircase. Several early fireplaces also survive in the building.

The Jorvik Viking Centre is a museum and visitor attraction in York, England, containing lifelike mannequins and life-size dioramas depicting Viking life in the city. Visitors are taken through the dioramas in small carriages equipped with speakers. It was created by the York Archaeological Trust and opened in 1984. Its name is derived from Jórvík, the Old Norse name for York and the surrounding Viking Kingdom of Yorkshire.

28–32 Coppergate is a historic building in the city centre of York, in England. The rear part of the timber framed building originated as a five-bay hall house, built in the 15th century. It may be the building recorded as having been built by William Alne, Member of Parliament for York, in about 1420. However, the City of York Council note that, due to its size and unusual layout, it may have been constructed as an inn.The ground floor of the house was open, probably for use as a shop, while on the first floor, the two south-eastern bays formed a single hall, open to the roof, while the third bay had a third storey. The fourth and fifth bays were later demolished, and their form is not known. In front of the hall house, facing on to Coppergate, is a row of three three-storey tenements These also date from the 15th century, and have shops on the ground floor and accommodation above. Each floor was jettied. The first floor of 32 Coppergate extends out to the line of its second floor; this may be a later change, but the City of York Council argues that it acted as a porch, and would have been in the centre of the facade of the original building.In the 17th century, a floor was inserted into the hall, to make this part of the building three-storeyed, and fireplaces were also added. The building was further altered in about 1800. Originally, each shop had its own entrance, and there were pointed shop windows, but the current shopfronts date from the 19th century. 28 Coppergate was restored in 1988, and then 30 Coppergate was restored in 1994.On the first floor are a couple of fragments of 17th century painted wall plaster. Some decorative plasterwork and fireplaces of this date also survive.The building was grade II* listed in 1954, with a note that it was an "apparently rare building type of which few other examples were known nationally", although 41–45 Goodramgate represents a more complete example in the same city. It is currently divided into two shops, one of which is the haberdashery Duttons for Buttons.

The following is a timeline of the history of the city of York, North Yorkshire in northern England.

The Battle of York was fought between the Vikings of the Great Heathen Army and the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria on 21 March 867 in the city of York. Formerly controlled by the Roman Empire, York had been taken over by the Anglo-Saxons and had become the capital of the Kingdom of Northumbria. In 866 this kingdom was in the middle of a civil war, with Ælla and Osberht both claiming the crown. The Vikings, who had arrived on the eastern shores of the British Isles led by Ubba and Ivar, were able to take the city.In the spring of 867 Ælla and Osberht united to try to push the Vikings out of York. Despite the Northumbrians making it inside the walls, the battle ended without success, and with the deaths of both Ælla and Osberht. Following their victory the Vikings would initially set up a puppet king named Ecgberht, before later creating the Kingdom of Jórvík centred on York.

The City of York is a unitary authority area with city status in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. The district's main settlement is York, and it extends to the surrounding area including the town of Haxby and the villages of Earswick, Upper Poppleton, Nether Poppleton, Copmanthorpe, Bishopthorpe, Dunnington, Stockton on the Forest, Rufforth, Askham Bryan and Askham Richard, among other villages and hamlets.
