Patterson Place, Baltimore

McElderry Park is a neighborhood in the northern part of the southeastern district of the City of Baltimore. Its boundaries are marked by East Fayette Street, East Monument Street, Linwood Avenue, and Patterson Park Avenue. South of McElderry Park is the neighborhood of Patterson Park; Butchers Hill is to the southwest. Ellwood Park is located to the east, and the campus of The Johns Hopkins Hospital to the west. To its north is the neighborhood of Madison-East End.In the early 1980s, McElderry Park suffered from white flight and abandonment by its working class homeowners. The closing of nearby public housing flooded the neighborhood with Section 8 tenants in individual rowhouses and apartments, with additional street crime, and illegal drug trade. Throughout the 1990s, the area became the most crime-ridden in old East Baltimore. Efforts are underway to turn things around, replacing abandoned buildings with productive uses such as public gardens. The 2000 census reported that 34.3 percent of McElderry Park's families had incomes below the poverty line. Although predominantly black, the neighborhood has significant white and Hispanic populations.

Bankard-Gunther Mansion is a historic home located at Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is a three-story, three bay wide, nine bay deep, flat roofed brick building built in 1866. It is a richly embellished Italianate style building built originally for Jacob J. Bankard, one of many enterprising and prominent butchers who flocked to "Butcher’s Hill", and later George Gunther, who established the Gunther Brewing Company in Baltimore. In 1919 the building became an important Baltimore charitable center to be used by the Hebrew Home for Incurables and the Emmanuel Center to provide humanitarian service to the community.Bankard-Gunther Mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Butchers Hill is a neighborhood in Southeast Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is north of Fells Point, east of Washington Hill, and northwest of Patterson Park. It is south of Fayette Street, west of Patterson Park Avenue, north of Pratt Street, and east of Washington Street. It is in the 21231 zip code. As its name suggests, Butchers Hill was once home to butchers and poultry preparers, many who were German American and Jewish American. It was a village prior to the Civil War. Although today it is considered to be less affluent than Fells Point, it was once the more prosperous community of the two. This is reflected in the larger size of the rowhouses. Butchers Hill is in proximity to more gentrified sections of Fells Point, the draw of Patterson Park, and the employment center on Johns Hopkins Hospital. Many artists reside in the neighborhood. A portion of it is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Many of the homes in this area have recently seen extensive renovations and urban development, and as a result, the neighborhood is increasingly popular among young professionals. Butchers Hill is a popular residence for students, residents, and staff at the nearby Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Hospital, and is one of the neighborhoods eligible for the Johns Hopkins "Live Near Your Work" grant incentive program toward down payments for full-time employees to purchase a home in the neighborhood. Laura Lippman's novel Butchers Hill tells the story of a private investigator working in this part of Baltimore.

It is a freestanding brick building that rises 3+1⁄2–4 levels from a low granite base to its essentially flat roof and parapet. Upper Fells Point, also known as "Fells Prospect," is a neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Located north of Fells Point, originally the neighborhood was home to Baltimore's dock workers. By the 1880s canneries and factories provided employment to new immigrants, including Irish, Italians and Poles. In the early 1900s these new Americans were joined by Jews, Lithuanians and Greeks. Today its tidy brick rowhouses and tree-lined streets are home to both old-timers and young urban professionals. It is also the heart of Baltimore's growing Latino community and is sometimes called "Spanish Town". Although most Hispanics in the neighborhood are Mexicans, there are significant populations of Salvadorans, Puerto Ricans, Hondurans, Dominicans, Guatemalans, Colombians, and Cubans, as well as many others. It is bordered by S. Broadway on the west, S. Patterson Park Avenue on the east, E. Lombard Street on the north and Eastern Avenue on the south, Upper Fells Point's central location puts residents within walking distance of Patterson Park, the dining and nightlife of Fells Point, Little Italy and Canton, and Johns Hopkins Hospital. It is also just a water taxi ride from Baltimore's Inner Harbor as well as Federal Hill. In 2006 the Baltimore City Paper selected Upper Fells Point as Baltimore's Best Neighborhood.The neighborhood was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 21, 2007. It is within Baltimore National Heritage Area.

Church Home and Hospital (formerly the Church Home and Infirmary) was a hospital in Baltimore, located on Broadway, between East Fayette and East Baltimore Streets, on Washington Hill, several blocks south of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, that also operated a long-term care facility. It was affiliated with the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland of the Episcopal Church (United States). It closed down permanently in 2000 and was later re-opened as a unit known as the "Church Home and Hospital Building" of J.H.H.

Middle East is a neighborhood in the heart of East Baltimore, Maryland. It is the site of a conflict between residents and the city's plans for creating a biotech park to serve nearby Johns Hopkins Medical Center. The neighborhood has suffered from extensive urban decay and housing abandonment, increased crime, and the effects of the Baltimore riot of 1968. Its residents are mainly lower income African Americans; the neighborhood was a filming location for the Baltimore-based HBO drama The Wire. Middle East is also noteworthy as being a location for the filming of scenes of the television series Homicide: Life on the Street and the 1991 film Homicide (no relation to the TV series) featuring Joe Mantegna. The swath of land between Johns Hopkins Hospital and Frank C. Bocek Park, which includes much of Middle East, is often referred to as the "Down the Hill" neighborhood by local residents.
