Boston Emergency Medical Services (Boston EMS) provides basic life support (BLS) and advanced life support (ALS) ambulance units throughout the neighborhoods in the city of Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Boston EMS is a public safety agency responding to 911 calls alone or with the Boston Police and/or Boston Fire Departments dependent upon the nature of an incident. The agency employs over 400 emergency medical technicians (EMT) and paramedics.Boston EMS is a bureau of the City of Boston Public Health Commission. Boston EMS hires Massachusetts State certified EMTs by competitive examination and upon completion of the Boston EMS Recruit Academy, and then promotes paramedics from within the department after completing an intense internship. The department is managed by a uniformed command staff consisting of a Chief of Department, a Superintendent-in-Chief, three Superintendents, and eleven Deputy Superintendents. There are sixteen ambulance stations located throughout the city. Field operations are commanded by a Deputy Superintendent (Shift Commander) and assisted by 2 Lieutenants (Field Supervisors) operating in 2 Divisions. A third impact Lieutenant is deployed as needed and during major citywide events. All department vehicles are equipped with Global Positioning (GPS) and Mobile Data Terminals (MDT). An EMT is assigned to the Boston Police Harbor Unit from mid spring though late fall. Boston EMS maintains a fully staffed Special Operations Unit which includes a heavy duty rescue truck, two medium duty rescue trucks, a state-of-the-art MCI bus, support trailers, ATV's and a bike team for special events and major incidents. In addition, several other specialized units provide logistical/technical support for Boston EMS operations, including a modern Dispatch Operations Center (staffed by EMTs) located in Boston Police Headquarters, the Training Division, a Community Initiatives Office and Administration & Finance office. The Materials Management Unit provides 24-hour equipment/supply services and the Fleet Services Unit maintain an inventory of approximately 120 department vehicles. There are also Facilities and Communications Engineering sections. Boston EMS is a unionized department with EMT's and Paramedics represented by the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association, EMS Division; Support Services staff represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME); Command Staff represented by SENA, and civilian office/clerical staff represented by SEIU. The Boston EMS ambulance fleet consists of Braun ambulances mounted on International TerraStar, and Ford F-450 Super Duty chassis.

It is the largest safety-net hospital and Level I trauma center in New England.BMC employs 1,466 physicians—including 711 residents and fellows—and 1,849 nurses. Kathleen E. Walsh has been the president and chief executive officer since 2010.

The Boston City Hospital (1864–1996), in Boston, Massachusetts, was a public hospital, located in the South End. It was "intended for the use and comfort of poor patients, to whom medical care will be provided at the expense of the city, and ... to provide accommodations and medical treatment to others, who do not wish to be regarded as dependent on public charity." In 1996, it merged with the Boston University Medical Center Hospital to form the Boston Medical Center.This building is currently under study for Boston Landmark status by the Boston Landmarks Commission.

Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) is one of the graduate schools of Boston University. Founded in 1976, the School offers master's- and doctoral-level programs in public health. It is located in the heart of Boston University's Medical Campus in the South End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. The school has more than 8,900 alumni, 267 faculty, and 227 staff; its students hail from more than 43 countries, and its total research portfolio is worth more than $180 million. BUSPH is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health and ranked 6th among Public Health Graduate Schools by U.S. News & World Report. The current dean is Sandro Galea. Former dean Robert Meenan stepped down at the end of 2014 after serving in the role for 22 years.

The Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) is one of the graduate schools of Boston University. Founded in 1848, the medical school was the first institution in the world to formally educate female physicians. Originally known as the New England Female Medical College, it was subsequently renamed BUSM in 1873. In 1864, it became the first medical school in the United States to award an M.D. degree to an African-American woman. BUSM is the only medical school located in the South End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Boston Medical Center, its primary teaching hospital, operates the largest 24-hour Level I trauma center in New England, and the largest network of regional community health centers.Boston University School of Medicine is the home of the Framingham Heart Study, from which all knowledge of cardiovascular disease risk factors were originally discovered. Notable alumni of the medical school include Marcia Angell, former editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine and the only woman to hold the position in the journal's almost 200-year history, as well as Louis Wade Sullivan, former Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services and founder of Morehouse School of Medicine. Boston University School of Medicine is ranked 29th on the 2019 list of Best Medical Schools in the Best Research category by the U.S. News & World Report.

Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital was a homeopathic institution in Boston, Massachusetts, at which the first successful kidney removal in New England was performed. Established by an act of the Massachusetts legislature in 1855, the hospital opened its doors in 1871 at a site in Jamaica Plain. In 1874 it moved into a newly built facility in the South End of Boston. Over the next 30 years its facilities in that area were expanded, and in 1908 it opened a satellite facility in Brighton for the treatment of contagious diseases. The hospital eventually abandoned homeopathic practices, and in 1929 became part of Massachusetts Memorial Hospitals. This was eventually merged into the Boston University Medical Center, now part of Boston Medical Center. The hospital's main building survives, and is known as the Talbot Building; it now houses the Boston University School of Public Health.

The Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine is the dental school at Boston University. Its curriculum is based on the Applied Professional Experience (APEX) Program, which gives students practical experience at a dental practice as part of clinical training. The School has about 800 students in predoctoral and postdoctoral programs. The School can trace its origins to 1958 when the Boston University Medical School started a Department of Stomatology to provide postdoctoral education in dentistry. At that time, the institution was the only one in the country devoted solely to specialty education in dentistry. In 1963, it became Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry under the leadership of Dean Henry M. Goldman. In 1970, the School moved to 100 East Newton Street. In 1972, the School included a predoctoral program leading to a DMD degree. In September 2021, the School completed a three-year expansion/renovation project at an approximate $115 million cost.In 1996, the School was renamed the “Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine” In 2008, Dr. Jeffrey W. Hutter was named Dean. He retired on March 31, 2021.In November 2021, Dr. Cataldo Leone was named Dean.

The South Bay House of Correction is a Suffolk County jail. It was opened in 1991, replacing an earlier structure from the 1880s.

The National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories, or NEIDL, is a biosciences facility of Boston University located near Boston Medical Center on Albany Street in the South End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. The lab is part of a national network of secure facilities that study infectious diseases, whether naturally occurring or introduced through bioterrorism. The Labs include a BSL-4 laboratory, which study the most dangerous and deadly human diseases.The current director of NEIDL is microbiology researcher Dr. Ronald Corley, also Chair of Microbiology at Boston University.

Orchard Park, also known as "Home of New Edition," was one of Boston's most notorious housing projects, located in Roxbury, Massachusetts. It is also the former home of singer Bobby Brown and New Edition members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ralph Tresvant. The 350-unit three-story brick complex was built in 1941 and was demolished in 1998 due to crime problems.

The Joshua Bates School is a historic school building at 731 Harrison Avenue in the South End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story Romanesque Revival brick building was designed by Arthur H. Vinal and built in 1884. It was named for financier and major benefactor of the Boston Public Library Joshua Bates. The school was closed in 1975 as a consequence of court-ordered desegregation actions. It was rehabilitated and adapted for use as artists' studios in 2003.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.The original sea wall for the South End can still be seen on the Harrison Avenue side of its school yard. American poet James Hercules Sutton attended this school from 1947 to 1951.

The Lawrence Model Lodging Houses are historic apartment houses located at 79, 89, 99 and 109 East Canton Street in the South End of Boston, Massachusetts. Built in 1874, these 4+1⁄2-story brick buildings were designed by Boston architects, Charles K. Kirby and William F. Goodwin. Three of the four have a traditional Second Empire mansard roof, while the fourth has a brick-faced attic level. They were built with funds from industrialist and financier Abbott Lawrence, who left a $50,000 bequest to provide housing for the poor.On September 22, 1983, they were added to the National Register of Historic Places.
